Free Music Review: Setting the Tool Record Straight
Hit: 3 Stars

Being a huge Tool fan, and after reading all of the reviews comparing 10 Years to them, I was excited to download and check out The Autumn Effect album. The comparison couldn't be further from the truth.

The entire album is in 4/4 or 3/4 time. There are no songs over 4 minutes long. There are no polyrhythms or syncopated riffs. The drumming and bass parts are very basic and could be played by a drum machine. There is very little dynamic contrast throughout the whole album; it seems as though every song is the same tempo, same volume, and is the exact same form as the others. They are just another basic, novice rock band.

Essentially, if you are any type of musician with any knowledge of music and enjoy Tool due to their progressive nature, you will be let down by this band and album.

I guess that a point has been missed in the last 6+ years since Lateralus was released. Now, any music that has a sense of melody with dark, brooding atmosphere and melodically aggressive juxtaposed with crooning vocals is being tagged as similar to Tool and A Perfect Circle. While I accept the fact that Tool and A Perfect Circle have laid their influence heavily on many recently well-known bands, and that the aforementioned musical characteristics, that are Tool and A Perfect Circle's calling card, are becoming more prevalent in smart, introspective music - I disagree that all bands that display tendencies towards those characteristics are ripping anyone off.

All bands are a product of their influences, especially on a first album. I personally can see the resemblance, musically, that people would draw between 10 Years and those two monolithic bands, but I think the only similarity lies in a broad comparison of how they construct and add emotion to their compositions. If you're looking for a more accurate comparison, look at Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin and Hurt. 10 Years has more in common with those bands in terms of melodic mode and song structure. Tool is a muscular, visceral, rhythm and atmosphere-oriented band; A Perfect Circle is music built for female vocals and is appropriately sparse, dynamic and melodic. Both bands have a tendency toward a darker tonality, while the more recent bands mentioned above have more Major key tendencies and rely on much simpler structures. Tool steered away from simple structure as long ago as Undertow. A Perfect Circle has kept it simple, but 10 Years' sound is immensely more dense than A Perfect Circle's minimalistic approach. 10 Years creates music that includes both extremes and infuses the combination with elements that link them to more recent groups.

Every band is a product of their influences, and as I mentioned before, Tool and A Perfect Circle have been extremely influential. It's only natural that we will witness similar themes from bands that developed their talents in conjuction with enjoying certain brands of musical style. All bands create music that is derivative. Fortunately, 10 Years has recognized and uses some of the best qualities in their interpretation of the styles that Tool and A Perfect Circle have brought to the mainstream. To view the concept historically, Beethoven's first works sounded much like the Baroque composers before him. Beethoven's mid to late works, in turn, influenced the Romantic-era composers that came after him. It's a cycle - quit complaining and enjoy the transition.

Now I must disagree with the others...Tool and APC both have a unique sound all their own very hard to immatate...now with 10 years while they mildly sound like both bands they're different from them they have more of a nu rock feel...which tool and apc lack...whereas with nu rock Earshot ect ect...they tend to fade into obscurity after a few months or a year or two...I think 10 years might be able to keep the longevity as long as they continue the good sound they have now...now with all that said I think the album was well worth it and the Amazon recommendation thing did well with this band...

Free Music Review: Decidedly average

I like that 10 years is putting out music with some depth. As many have pointed out, they can get a bit tool-esque (although the vocals are different). They seem to be trying hard to be deep, and at times I feel like they're trying too hard. The album has it's highs, and I'm a big fan of half-life, but not much else. Decent but very average.

I purchased this CD for my daughter who has recently gone through some very troubling times. Much of the music on this CD was artist-written and reflected on some difficult times in his life. My daughter loves the music and it brings with it words of encouragement and hope. I would highly recommend it, especially for young people, who are contemplating difficult decisions (aren't we all!) as it brings a ray of hope that someone else made it through and so can you. Christina plays it first thing every morning to get her days started right.
