Free Music Review: ain't over till it's over

While Deceptive Bends isn't *quite* on the same level of brilliance as How Dare You?, the majority of the songs are in fact extremely melodic and cleverly written regardless of being perhaps a small notch down in terms of overall quality.
There is a distinct lack of that extra creative, distinctly written sophistication that previous 10cc albums brought to the table, but that's hardly a complaint when, again, the melodic aspect is so darn appealing. Just expect fairly normal songwriting by 10cc's standards. That's the only problem, but hey, I still give Deceptive Bends an easy 5 stars anyway so it's obviously not a big deal.
Everyone knows the famous sing along "The Things We Do For Love" by this point in time. A monster smash hit back in the 1977, it's an absolute delight hearing this song over and over again. Some call it campy- I call it playful fun and a nice example of a perfect pop song. It hasn't faded over time either- it's played regularly on radio stations all across America even to this very day. That should drop a hint how most people feel about it.
"Modern Man Blues" is perhaps a clever commercialized-sounding attempt at the modern style blues of the late 70's, but the verse melody and chorus are so irresistible that it doesn't matter WHAT style the song is supposed to fall under. The lyrics are a bit strange and perhaps a tad offensive towards women, but the vocal melody makes it a treat to play.
"Marriage Bureau Rendezvous" has a WONDERFUL vocal melody. Again, the trickiness and clever antics from the previous 10cc albums isn't here so it's understandably not as good as the older 10cc material, but that doesn't concern me in the least when I'm having so much fun with that gorgeously-delivered vocal melody. The lyrics about "Looking across the table at you" are really good too. Excellent song.
"People in Love" is a Leo Sayer-style ballad, and the results are that the song reflects the time period in which it was released because many songs from the late 70's resemble it. However considering it's a legitimately soulful ballad, something I've never heard 10cc experiment with quite THIS much... well that makes it a little better than most artists who've attempted the same style. "Honeymoon With B Troop" shows slight signs of the old version of 10cc, but just slightly. I dig the groovy punch of the verse melody regardless.
Perhaps the most underrated song is the next one- "I Bought a Flat Guitar Tutor". It took me MANY listens to get into it, revealing its complexity despite being under 2 minutes in length. The lyrics are nothing short of genius. The vocal melody sounds so simple, and yet, it's FAR from it. The lengthy "Feel the Benefit" doesn't blow me away like it apparently does for most of the people who hear it. Most people consider it the obvious highlight of the album but to me, it's just alright. I swear some of those chords remind me of the Beatles "Dear Prudence". Either an amazing coincidence or perhaps 10cc borrowed elements from that classic Beatles song. I don't really care though. I've heard enough Beatles over the last 20 years that I don't even feel like going back to them anymore, so I'd gladly welcome a band like 10cc.
Overall Deceptive Bends shows signs of a band trying to move on despite some of the key band members leaving, and the results are still really spectacular despite hardly ever including that distinct, creative edge that made me fall in love with the band in the first place.
