Free Music Review: Aural paradise that's more than a film score

Because it's so easy to become immersed in a Vangelis album, I picked up 1492: Conquest of Paradise long before I ever saw the movie, which made for an odd experience when I finally got around to seeing it. By that time, I'd heard the soundtrack so often, and had formed such a strong connection to it, I found myself relating more to the film's score than to the movie itself, except to note how well the music was cued to the images. That says something about the majesty of this music, that it almost diminishes the film it was composed to enhance.
This music is so good, so distinct, Vangelis would have gotten around to writing it anyway, with or without the commission to write a film score. For the CD, the soundtrack is consolidated and woven into a single long piece with perhaps one break between tracks. Vangelis arranged it to create a performance separate from the film, intended to be enjoyed in its own right, similar to how Peter Gabriel released the music he composed for The Last Temptation of Christ as Passion: Music for the Last Temptation of Christ, with Gabriel going so far as embellishing the title to draw a distinction between it and the film. 1492: Conquest of Paradise is a masterpiece of tones and textures. It begins with the alluring "Opening," suggesting pristine waterfalls amidst edenic tranquility, then drifting into the foreboding march of "The Conquest of Paradise." Once the unspoiled aural landscape has been plowed, the introduction is over. The music then moves through various Spanish, Gregorian, and native flavored chants and melodies. When it's over, it resonates with you, as if you've sat through a symphony, with all the movements building toward a whole. I never select separate tracks; I always listen to the whole thing.
Vangelis' compositions possess an eldritch beauty that sparkles in the imagination. I'm reminded remotely of Ennio Morricone, who can also be so startling and provocative. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if you like Morricone's western soundtracks, you'll like Vangelis. A favorable start for anyone unfamiliar with his work would be 1492: Conquest of Paradise. While this has a cinematic grandeur in its conception, it's a distinct composition to be enjoyed for its own merits. For anyone looking for evidence that there are creative realms yet unexplored, this album is the rich bounty of one of Vangelis' more rewarding expeditions.
