Free Music Review: This album will permanently change the way you view the world
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard this album as a 15-year old when a high school bud loaned it to me. "It blew my mind" as we said back in the day. It is a hilarious combination of straight ahead rock, orchestral pieces, pseudo-operatic interludes on topics of intense teen interest, mixed in with titillating tales of life on the road for a rock band with a big hit single in the charts. Flo and Eddie from the Turtles have leading roles in vocals on this album, it turns out they are hilariously funny when simply turned loose, and they really shine here. Animated sequences are mixed in with filmed performances, to get a taste, youtube Dental Hygiene Dilemma, in which bass player Jeff is tempted by Satan to quit the comedy band (in fact Jeff did leave!). If you can believe that comic aspects of life can be appropriately mixed with music to great effect, you really should have this album.

Free Music Review: An amazing forgotten rock opera!
Hit: 5 Stars

For those who enjoy some of the older rock opera style movies this is a must for any of these type of movie fans. You don't really understand what 200 Motels is about the first time you watch it. But after viewing the movie a few times, you begin to realize Zappa was ahead of his time when he created this movie. I think the music score has some of Zappa's best work, and was the early signs that he was a musical genius as was proven in the 80's and 90's. I think most would be impressed with the video clips of Mystery Roach and Magic Fingers, truly rare footage of the hard core rock the Mothers could whip out and put others to shame. Again, this one is a must for those into rock movies, I'd have to rank this one right up the with the Who's Tommy, and Pink Floyd's Wall Movie.

Free Music Review: so so
Hit: 5 Stars

The title is designed to catch your attention, as I gave it 5 stars anyway. I agree with most of the comments that follow. It is not his best album (if only because he hasn't got his best band) but it is one of his most ambitious, most incoherent, most underrated pieces of music.

OK, the film doesn't look too good after all those years, and let's not kid ourselves into thinking Zappa was a great film producer as well, but BOY! He does produce some magical moments here: the Strictly Genteel finale, the She painted up her face sequence, Magic Fingers, Tuna sandwich etc, the tunes just keep on coming. If you buy one Zappa cd do not buy this. Of you buy five, this one must be included.

Free Music Review: "200 MOTELS" review from Juxtapoz magazine
Hit: 5 Stars

On CD for the first time, this "soundtrack" to the film of the same name is primarily a showcase for Zappa's symphonic compositions, and demonstrates the immensity of his musical scope. By no means the most accessible of Zappa's albums, this quasi-operatic account of "life on the road" is a swirling quagmire of dissonant orchestral "scary music," interwoven with stupid cowboy songs, catchy-as-hell rock, scatological satire, and bad-trip psychedelia. Those up to the challenge should buy this double album and experience the sheer beauty and mind-numbing complexity of Zappa's music. A true gem from one of this century's most important artists.

Free Music Review: incredible
Hit: 5 Stars

i first heard this album when i was about 8. i didn't get it at all. then i listened to it again when i was 14, and i started to like it. now, at the ripe old age of 18, this is one of my favorites. frank zappa was never out to please the general audience, and in order to appreciate this, one has to be slightly wacked. the album must be listened to straight through, and watching the movie doesn't hurt either. it's simply incredible and also incredibly satirical. definitely a masterpiece.
