Free Music Review: Thanks TOFOG, OWOS is divine!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a TOFOG fans for a few years, have all the previous CDs. True, I found TOFOG through being a Russell Crowe fan, but that does not negate how entertaining this band is. OWOS is a definite departure for them, but plainly maps their growth from raucous raw pub band (Gaslight), to a more commercial but still rockin' folk rock band (Bastard Life or Clarity) to OWOS, a CD that can compete with many more well-known groups out there today. OWOS has superior production with wonderfully fluid and lyrical arrangements. There is a terrific mix of full on rocking dance around the room songs as well as a few ballads which will leave you wanting more of this velvet-yet-growly-voiced singer. Stand outs for me include "Painted Veil", "Full Length of the River" and "Afraid". Dare I say I truly enjoy TOFOG's interpretation of "Folsom Prison Blues" even more than the Man in Black's own version.

Free Music Review: Wish I discovered this a few years ago...
Hit: 5 Stars

After seeing Russell Crowe on a repeat of the Charlie Rose show promoting CINDERELLA MAN, I impulsively downloaded "My Hand My Heart", his internet-only "solo" CD. I was blown away, and quickly ordered the Grunts' back catalog- This CD was the first to arrive, and I am equally impressed. Favorite tracks are Painted Veil and Inside Her Eyes, although all the tracks are standouts. I'm bummed that the band has "dissolved/evolved", but they are new to me, and I'm happy to be so pleasantly surprised when I had no expectations. Go to iTunes, and download the Russell solo CD. I literally haven't stopped playing it in a month, and am seeking out "Great Big Sea" who collaborated with RC on "My Hand My Heart"... Good stuff!! Looking forward to receiving GASLIGHT and BASTARD LIFE OR CLARITY...

Free Music Review: A Big Step Up For TOFOG
Hit: 5 Stars

My wife is a TOFOG enthusiast, and I have been osmosed into their music by our mutual existance. I've never been a TOFOG nut, but appreciate the stories and their originality, although the looseness of the band and Russell's voice haven't completely sold me. Other Ways of Speaking has changed my feelings about the group; the band has really come into their own and is "in the pocket" throughout this album. They have forced Russell to do a better job as well, hitting more of the notes on target while getting those great lyrics across to the listener. I hesitate to rate this album a "5", but in fact, it is as good or better than other albums I have rated a "5". Keep up the great work TOFOG, you got yourselves another fan.

Free Music Review: Discovering...Other Ways of ....listening
Hit: 5 Stars

My favorite CD's are the ones that don't reveal themselves on first listen. OWOS is one of these.

At first you hear the soothing quality of Russells's voice, and then the second go 'round you begin to hear his words. And then you want to turn off the words...close your eyes and get lost in the music.

Be warned, the lyrics aren't going to click with you right off. They must be broken open...you find that they are not merely lyrics, but poetry. And you must taste them more than once to decide their flavor. Sometimes they frustrate the listener because the meanings are not apparent. We are so used to the obvious. And as an audience, we like every song to be blatantly about ourselves. OWOS requires more of you...unearthing treasure usually does.

Free Music Review: Great mix of haunting lyrics and talent
Hit: 5 Stars

Russell Crowe writes beautiful lyrics and this CD has some great and memorable songs in the play list. The six musicians that make up this band are extremely talented individuals and that is evident on this CD. Contrary to some critics review of Russell's voice, he has a deep, sultry voice that reminds you of Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen. He doesn't pretend to be a classically trained singer. He just loves to sing and play music with his band mates. Some songs touch your heart and some make you want to get up and dance. If you like great music you will love this CD.

Well worth the money for the CD and I highly recommend their other two CD's: Gaslight and Bastard, Life or Clarity, to anyone that likes alternative Rock music.
