Free Music Review: Oh, Russell...don't fall for your own publicity!
Hit: 2 Stars

Ok, as a true Grunts fan, several things about this album are different and troubling. First, the cover art. Never before has an album of theirs featured their photos, but this one has Russell's big ol' mug plastered all over the front (and, honestly, it's not that great of a picture) while the rest of the band just has washed-out images inside the booklet. Second, it's not 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, now; it's RUSSELL CROWE and 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. I could see separating him if he had an amazing voice, but he's not that good and the songs sometimes emphasize his shortcomings rather than his strengths.
Third, the tracks sound as though they were mixed on separated occasions--one day, the band played and sang, the next day Russell 'sang'. Again, sorry sweetie, but you're just not that good to warrant the special treatment.
As with any TOFOG album, the lyrics (written almost exclusively by Crowe) tend to be more than just a little pretentious. The melodies and harmonies are well done, though, and some songs are catchy, as long as you don't concentrate too hard on what he thinks he's saying. A personal favorite is "Inside Her Eyes", and "Swallow My Gift" is worth a listen (as well as having the best title--ever!).
If you're already a fan, this album may leave you cold; if you're not already a fan, this album will not convert you.

Free Music Review: I just don't like this album
Hit: 2 Stars

The only song on this album that I found to be interesting is Mission Beat. Other then that all the songs sound much like Gaslight and BLOC, which aren't anthing to "write home about". Unlike his wife, Danielle Spencer, who has an absolutly beautiful voice, Russell's doesn't do anything for me. I always have felt that he sounds off key. Also, as another reviewer said, I don't like that the band is Russell Crowe and TOFOG now. And I don't like that the band is not featured the same way Russell is on the cover.

Free Music Review: Not as good as his acting
Hit: 2 Stars

This hurts me to say it -- how can I put this? -- He is a much better actor than singer. The only song of his I like -and I love it- is "Weight of a Man," and that's not on this CD. The best part of this CD is the picture on the cover. (Ok, I can breathe again now.) I like the intensity of his persona, and his singing just doesn't match up.

Free Music Review: Time to clean house
Hit: 1 Stars

I was impressed with Gaslight and BLOC. But this time around I just find the work lacking in so many areas. It is missing the Dean Cochran touch for one thing. Too much Dave Wilkins influence here and I still remember the night in Austin drinking with him when he told us all how much he disliked the music of TOFGO and really disliked Russell Crowe. His lack of emotional commitment to the project is pulling it down. Time to clean house boys and get a new member or go back to the orginal line up. Put Dean back in charge, he loves the music and it shows.

Free Music Review: He can act and he can write but the man cannot sing
Hit: 1 Stars

I bought this album with great expectations because I love Russell as an actor, but I think his singing must be an acquired taste and I'm not willing. If the band played alone this would be a fabulous listen, they are very good, but Russell's singing only gets in the way. Do yourself a favor and listen to the samples before you spend money on this album. Russell writes very well but his words are not really conducive to lyrics, there are just too many of them.
