Bastard Life or Clarity" is the new album by hot Aussie band TOFOG. A little known band and in my opinion vastly under-rated.TOFOG consists of 6 guys who blend well together into a tight musical group.
Stewie Kirwan on the horn adds a distinctive flavour. Dean Cochran is the lead guitar maestro with some impressive guitar licks. He can certainly jam with the best of them. Dave Wilkins lends strong falsetto vocals with Dave Kelly demonstrating power and enthusiasm on the drums.Garth Adam has a solid sense of rhythmn on bass and Russell Crowe fronts on guitar and vocals. His other great strength is in his thought provoking lyrics.(He writes most of the lyrics himself with some input from his band mates.)The man is a born story-teller.
I particularly liked Memorial Day which has great horn and guitar chords. Things Have Got To Change is another great track which makes you want to just get up and dance. Barry Kable, the slow version, is emotive and atmospheric and my favourite from the album. The slow version I think is particularly appropriate to the subject matter of the song.
This album grows on you - give it a listen and you'll find yourself slowly becoming immersed in this music. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

To the uninitiated, who are contemplating buying a CD from the 'Russell Crowe's band': you will be pleasantly surprised. By his own admission, Russell is first a musician, and he was long before appearing on celluloid. This album is a nice sampling of the folky/country/rock sound of the band. Very easy to listen to....unusual enough to keep your interest. If you like folk/country or garage-style rock, you'll like this - it's the kind of CD you'll wear out.A word of warning: This band has improved greatly in a short time. They are rough around the edges - for example, Russ can very occasionally lean toward being flat - but instrumentally they are good to excellent, with exceptional guitar. The recent addition of a horn to the band really adds to the poignancy of certain songs, and is well done. Russell's voice when it is at its usual, is fine - warm, gravelly, masculine, often tender, sometimes rough, always expressive.
I find personally that the rough edges add to the band-next-door accessible quality of their music. Too much polish is not always a good thing....Overall, I can't wait to see what they do next.

I have listened to this CD several times and am very impressed with Russell Crowe. His deep, masculine speaking voice is echoed in his deep, mellow singing. The songs he wrote are good listening; however, his song, Memorial Day, dedicated to his grandfather is deeply touching. The love and admiration for him brought tears to me eyes -- perhaps because I was also very close to my grandfather whom I loved more than anyone else in my family. I recommend this album to everyone who is a fan of Russell...or those who prefer something more than just the average rock music. In his music, his deep sensitivity shines brightly through. And, you can hear the words not drowned out by the band. I hope that Russell Crowe's music will soon be heard more frequently in the USA!
