Free Music Notes for 300 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: 300 soundtrack
Hit: 3 Stars

I must confess I only acquired the Tyler Bates film score to 300 because of Azam Ali, one of my favorite singers in recent years. I was rather surprised by how in your face Tyler's film score was (have yet to see the movie, my bad :p). Tyler's music relies heavily on percussion with minimal use of an stringed instruments. There isn't a whole lot of melody in a lot of the songs. From what little I have seen of the film, the loud, bombastic score is appropriate considering the violent nature of the film. Thankfully there are moments when the bombastic music is turned down a few notches like on the haunting "What Must a King do?" and "No Sleep Tonight". That track is definitely reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's work on the GLADIATOR film score. I must say that the song "No Sleep Tonight" was too eerily like what I heard on GLADIATOR. I definitely can see why people would accuse Tyler of being a plagurist. Azam Aliz does an uncanny impersonation of Lisa Gerrard on this track. The similiarities between her and Lisa Gerrard's vocals from the GLADIATOR soundtrack is uncanny. I can only listen to 300 in small doses. I find a lot of the music too obnoxious for my taste. While I did like "No Sleep Tonight" and "What Must a King Do?", I wished that Tyler Bates would have gotten an imagination and tried to create music that was not a dead on impersonation of the work that can be heard on GLADIATOR.

Free Music Review: Two Great Tracks, the rest is abmbient music
Hit: 3 Stars

The Tracks called 'Goodbye My Love' and 'Returns a King' (which does sound a lot like the Titus soundtrack song, but in the world of film making, isn't unusual for actual composers to NOT be credited if they only contribute SOME music - and this reason alone isnt enough to just dismiss the album) are truely beautiful tracks. BUT they can't carry this album all by themselves!

For this soundtrack connoisseur the album is more ambient music than listenable music. It's similar to the style of Angelo Badalamenti where there are little 'tweets' of music without any real structure and often features no changes in tempo or any discernable climax. Their purpose is to provide background music to a scene within a movie - and within the movie it did it well! But when you're listening to the album, especially while driving, it seems like long pauses between anything substantial.

The final nail in the 'dont buy me' coffin is the short length of the tracks which is often below 3 minutes. I suggest tracks 4 and 9 off your choice of MP3 provider.

Free Music Review: "Copied" Theme
Hit: 3 Stars

You may find this very interesting.
One theme from 300, heard principally on the track
"Returns a King", is for the most part identical
to the main theme from Titus.

If you don't know it, it's Shakespeare and stars Anthony Hopkins.
When I heard it in 300, I knew I had heard it before
but couldn't quite place it. Eventually, I remembered.

As proof, if you look up Titus (right here on Amazon)
and listen to the first sample, titled "Victorious Titus"
and listen to "Returns a King" from 300, you'll see what I mean.
Just found it to be very interesting, that's all ...

Free Music Review: missing a track
Hit: 3 Stars

Whether or not the claims that this soundtrack is a rip-off, it is still a great listen. My problem (and it's a big one) is that it is simply missing a track. The song/piece heard when Leonidas goes 1-on-1 with the Uber-Immortal giant is not included at all.

That distinct drum beat cannot be found anywhere in the soundtrack. Contrary to common sense, it is not in "Immortals Battle" or even "Fever Dream"... and that track is the reason I bought this ST!

Free Music Review: good soundtrack
Hit: 3 Stars

It's a pretty good sountrack to have as background music for most activities.
