Free Music Notes for 311

Free Music Review: Awesome!
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD is one of the best in my collection. I bought it in 1997 and have listened to it regularly ever since. This 311 CD is full of hits. Their unique style of funk/rock/rap is a perfect combination. Who would have thought they would have come from Nebraska. I have seen them in concert four times. They put on the best live show I have ever seen. See one of their shows in Omaha if you can. They always have an awesome band open for them (Zebrahead, The Wailers, etc). If you like this album don't stop there. 311 shows you something different on every one of their albums. This album is needed in everyone's collection.

Free Music Review: A Piece Of Essential 311
Hit: 4 Stars

Simply put, this album is one that put 311 on the map for many in 1996, a year after it was released, when the singles "Down" and "All Mixed Up" went into heavy rotation. The album, as a whole, provides the listener with a straightforward taste of the 311 sound. The songs are tight, easily digestable, and with the exception of "Purpose" and "Sweet", faster paced and distortion heavy. This album is a very easy one to put on and play through. The two previously mentioned songs are not to be overlooked - both are a prime example of the band's ablility to blend reggae flavors with their own version of rock. Throughout the album, every member carries their own weight - S.A.'s vocals on "Random", Nick's clever wordplay in "Sweet" along with Tim's gut-wrenching solo, P-Nut's bass riff on the chorus of "Don't Stay Home" and as always, Chad Sexton never fails to amaze with his propensity for drumming. All in all a very enjoyable straightforward rocker.

Free Music Review: it takes time
Hit: 4 Stars

I first got this cd probably five years ago, did what most of the kids my age did then and listened to the single, and put it down. now, 2003 i got the cd back out two weeks ago and thats all i've been playing. id go running to it cuz the energy gets me pumped, id roll up to tryouts blasting it, (especially the short little drum solo on track eleven). the creativity and energy the band brings on this studio cd is awesome, i highly recommend this cd. if you don't like it at first, trust me, it will grow on you.

Free Music Review: not as good as expected
Hit: 3 Stars

You know the first 311 album I got was "Soundsystem" and I loved it. So I soon got "From Chaos" and the new one "Evolver" (one of the best). This one was defintely good but not what I expected. 311 has evolved so much as a band from grassroots to evolver but this album I wasn't feelin too much. Most of the songs were good but they grew on you after awhile. I think the cd would be 10 times better if there wasn't so much rap. I guess I'm just used to a sound like evolver or from chaos and havent experienced the past 311 albums to know what to expect from them. If your looking for a unique awesome punk sound then get this album. I'm sure alot of 311 fans would disagree with me but this album is not one of 311's best.

Free Music Review: Whew, this is an intense album!
Hit: 4 Stars

I bought this album through Amazon about a year ago, and they suggested that I review it, so here it goes:

This is a pretty good album, from a pretty good band. Not excellent, but definately not bad. "311" is not an album to listen to as background music. the everflowing vocals and highspeed rhymes makes this album very hard to ignore while it is playing. The thing that impresses me the most about 311 is the tinge of reggae that their music has, especially the slower songs like "All Mixed Up". The problem is that I just get tired of them by the end of the album. There are hardly any breaks in the vocals for us listeners to rest, and this can just get exhausting for 50 minutes.

I don't know a whole lot about the band 311, but I do know that this is one of their earlier albums, and that their more modern music is much more mellow, so if you are looking for an upbeat and intense album that follows songs like "Down", then get this. But if you prefer softer, reggaeish music, then buy one of their newer albums.
