Free Music Review: No Grassroots, but still great
Hit: 5 Stars

This album took a little while to grow on me but I love it now...Though it's no 'Music' or 'Transistor', etc, it's a refreashing album...There's a lot less Pnut, no slap unfortunetly, it's cheesey at times, it has a lot of straight forward political and society orientated themes, and there's only 11 songs but it's still a very fun album...I hate to hear people complain about the dancehall sound of a lot of the songs, but that's why I love this album...SA owns this album...

1. DTOM- 9/10- Tim throws is a lot of reggae to the song. P-Nut got a great bassline..SA has a great verse, thank god they didn't use the demo version lyrics..However, I gave it a 9 because it was amazing live...

2. Thank Your Lucky Stars- 6/10- This is my least favorite song on the album...I hate the chorus...

3. Frolic Room- 8/10- Rock song based on Nick's encounters at a bar in LA called the Frolic Room... I liked the demo version better without the SA verse...chorus is catchy and well sung...

4. Speak Easy- 9/10- Next Amber (not a good thing), nonetheless, still a great song, Tim's part is very cool, very chill song, catchy....

5. Solar Flare- 8/10- Rockin song, really only song on the album with old-SA style, could very well fit on earlier albums...

6. Waiting- 8/10- Cheesey song, that's fine though, it's a fun song. Very dancehall-esque. WATCH OUT

7. Long For the Flowers- 8/10- Took a while to grow on me but I like Nick's chorus ... Tim has a cool solo as well...

8. Getting Through to Her- 10/10- Very catchy song, great to hear SA actually singing a lot on this album...I got to tell him that recently, his response, "Phew"...

9. Whiskey and Whine- 9/10- Hmmm.. 'Champagne' is to 'Amber' as 'W&W' is to 'Speak Easy'...very chill...

10. It's Getting OK Now- 10/10- A lot like Getting Through to Her, SA dominated, catchy subtle chorus...

11. There's Always an Excuse- 9/10- This album's 'Jacks'..."Doors"ish feel to it, love the subtle bassline Pnut provides, good closing song

Overall, it's missing a lot of past elements but it's still very good, very different style from older stuff...It's definetly going to be underrated... I feel they've matured as people and it shows in their music, it's not weird or silly lyrics, be that good or bad...This is not the party album 'Music' or even 'Soundsystem' are and strays completley away from being a pot orientated album, again, be that good or bad...It's a great chill, fun album, it's awesome to have 311 back...

Free Music Review: Can't Tread On Them
Hit: 5 Stars

This album was a great sucess. It's all about freedom, which is something everyone wants a little of. I think the band did an excellent job at showing how they feel.

"Don't Tread On Me" was an awesome song that'll always be loved by 311 fans everywhere. The words are in our hearts.

"Thank Your Lucky Stars" is something that we need to do. With all that's been happening in the world, we're lucky if we aren't as effected as some are (such as our poor brothers ans sisters in New Orleans). If we do have something wrong, think about it. It could be worse.

"Frolic Room" is a great song that has a lot to do with going out every night to parties when things are happening in another part of the world. We have to think 'What are we celebrating?'

"Speak Easy" is a personal favorite of mine. A lot of people, adults and teenagers alike, are scared of speaking thier minds. This song tell you that it's alright to show your opinions and if you do that you'll find it's a relief.

"Solar Flare" is the harder song of the album. It has to do with child abuse as well as political leaders. It shows about the hypocrisy of some leaders and some things that they're doing. Awesome song!

"Waiting" is a song that all of us can or will feel. Everyone has to wait for love or thier loves. But if you hold on, you'll find your waiting's worth while.

"Long For The Flowers" is a good song. Some long for the flowers while other get more from the time spent with one another. That's life.

"Getting Through To Her" is something that I find myself singing out of the blue. Great song!!!

"Whiskey and Wine" is an awesome song as well, another one of my personal favorites. Something went wrong in the relationship and now you try to drink it away. It's killing you to do so.

"It's Getting Okay Now" is about death and dying. They ponder over what's going to happen when they die. Catchy song.

"There's Always An Excuse" is another aweseome song. It's true, too. If you look hard enough, for every problem you have, there's an excuse. But you need to take back the slack, you're not the only one going through it.

311 did an awesome job, as usual, on this album. All of the songs have great beats, good lyrics, and catchy vibes. As always, they find a way into your hearts and give you an up-beat view. In the words of 311, "Stay positive and love your life."

Free Music Review: 311 is back!!!!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's face it, Evolver was just not up to the 311 standards. But with the new album Don't Tread on Me, 311 are back! There is really only one song I don't like on this entire cd! Here's a breakdown song by song:

1. Don't Tread on Me- Great first single and good opener. I love the short heavy section after SA's part(who by the way, just killed on this album). 9/10

2. Thank Your Lucky Stars- this was instantly a favorite of mine. It got a little old quick but I still love that chorus! 9/10

3. Frolic Room- Mark my words, This WILL be a huge hit. Just as Down was a big hit back in the day, this will be huge. And a lot of hardore 311 fans don't like this song because of that. Well, I still like the song. 8/10

4. Speak Easy- Amazing song. As I said earlier, SA owned this album. His voice is so much more improved from earlier albums (not that he had a bad voice). 10/10

5. Solar Flare- to all the people who always complain that they want old 311, here it is. Very reminiscent of Hydroponic. It talks about society like MTV and the government. This song took some time to grow on me. 8.5/10

6. Waiting- The only song I don't like on the cd. I don't know, it just sounds bland. There's nothing there. Sounds like a barbershop quartet. 5/10

7. Long for the Flowers- alright song. The instrumental for this song was an outtake for the Transistor sessions and its weird to hear it with vocals after hearing it as an instrumental for so long. 8/10

8. Getting Through to Her- Beautiful song. This is an SA-only song he does a great job. The intro on guitar is absolutely beautiful. 9.5/10

9. Whiskey and Wine- Oh what a great, chill song. I love it. Even Nick's raggae breakdown is pretty cool except for when he does the "Yayyy" parts and he sounds like he's yodeling. 9/10

10. Its Getting OK Now- Best track on the album. Another All SA song, but Nick and Tim tear it up on guitar. I love the riff where Tim throws in the metal pinches. 10/10

11. There's Always an Excuse- This sounds like a continuation of Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm. And I guess this songs is pretty good. You kinda don't know what to expect with this one. Things come out of nowhere. Kudos to the guys for experimenting. 8/10

overall, this is 311's best album since From Chaos. I love almost every song on the cd.

Free Music Review: Thank Your Lucky Stars -- 311 Deliver An Excellent Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

Anyone who has been listening to 311 long enough could tell you how spotty their career has been thus far. Keeping in routine, they always have a new album on the shelf every two years, and sometimes that album is something special, and sometimes, it's a dud. If you ask me, since the turn of the century, they have been releasing duds. Not to say that 2001's "From Chaos" and 2003's "Evolver" were bad. Those albums did manage to spawn some truly memorable songs, but most of those songs were released as singles. The albums themselves just weren't as strong as the work 311 have done in the past. On their eighth studio album, however, the group are in full form and finally deliver an album that is among their best work.

"Don't Tread On Me" is essentially the album that the past two couldn't be. 311 seem to finally have found a style they are happy with and this is the result. Aside from the rap-rock revisited "Solar Flare," and the rock-you-around-the-room "It's Getting OK Now," 311 stick to a more laid back, chilled style. If they had released this album in June or July (instead of Ausgust), this would have made the perfect summer soundtrack. Songs like "Speak Easy" and "There's Always An Excuse" conjure up images of having cookouts and spending a day at the beach. It's a good album for a long drive (even though the album is under 40 minutes long) with the windows down. It's definitely meant to be a feel good album, and if you want their take on politics, they get that out of the way with the first track, "Don't Tread On Me," which speaks for itself.

Overall, "Don't Tread On Me" is 311's best in a long time. It's not going to win any new fans, but those already in the know will most likely find the material on here to be satisfying. It may be a quick listen, but every song is a hit. I find myself listening to this album, front to back, quite a bit. Which is rare for 311. The last album of theirs that held up this good was 1999's "Soundsystem." Hopefully, they keep on this roll and deliver us another solid release in 2007.
