Free Music Review: love it
Hit: 5 Stars

Diane J. Blum's review was genious, so read her's first...

Anyway, ive been a fan since 95, and theyve never put out an album i havent liked, and this is no exception. 311 has matured with this album beyond belief, and musically it is better than any other.

1) Dont tread on me: great popy/single tune, i usually hate singles, but this one was simply great.
2) Thank your lucky stars: Resembled early 311 such as lucky, and i cant get enough of the chorus, top notch
3)Frolic room: Another great potential single, with some cool riffs here and there.
4) Speak easy: Best song on the album, in my opinion, simply genious.
5) Solar flare: Hard, violent, tons of attitude, almost hurts to listen to (in a cool way), i love it.
6) Waiting: I do like this song, but it is my least favorite on the album, but i truley do like it a lot.
7) Long for the flowers: Real cool transistor B-side, nice solo by time.
8) getting through to her: very touching song, cool intro by tim
9) Whisky & wine: This is a great tune, really mellow and great guitar work
10) its getting ok now: Fast and fun, really cool song with cool riffs.
11) Theres always an excuse: Cool song, resembles Jacks, off evolver, but cool little "A day in the life" feel.

Great album overall, listen to it a few times before you decide, because i thought it was fairly mediocre at first, but now i cant stop listening to it.

note: forgive any misspellings/Internet spellings i did this fairly quickly at gunpoint

Free Music Review: wow
Hit: 5 Stars

As a 311 fan, I must first listen to a 311 album at least 5+ times before I give a true assessment. I've had the opportunity over the last 2 days to do so and am ready to review it. Let me say that I have been into these guys since they played a show at Traxx (R.I.P) in Charlottesville, VA way back in 1994 before they were all over the MTV. It was a tradegdy to see their videos and know that I was not a part of a small grassroots band from Omaha, NE anymore. As time permitted, I accepted the fact that 13 year old kids listened to MY 311 and have taken the mentality that thier music is what is. With that said, I was excited about August the 16th and my mentality was that it was going to be and awesome album.

I'm not going to go into detail about which albums are better and which songs on this particular album are better than others, but I will say that this is an album that you can play from start to finish and not skip a single track. Let me say that I can hear a bit of every one of thier albums in this CD. Sure, there are a lot of Reggae tracks on here, but this CD has the sound of classic 311 mixed with what 311 wants to sound like TODAY.

If you are one of those "311, Korn, Tool, Limp" guys, and you know who you are, don't bother wasting your time with this album or this band.
311 is its own genre and no 311 album deserves anything less than 4 stars.
Plus, not all music has to be heavy metal. Get over it people and get with one of the best 311 albums ever.

Free Music Review: This Album Feels So Good!
Hit: 5 Stars

You won't be disappointed as 311's style continues to evolve while remaining true to its distinctive alternative sound.

"Don't Tread On Me" separates itself from 311's discography as more melodic and soft. Overall, this album sounds less chaotic than 311's last album, "Evolver." The beats are more reggae-inspired and the vocals aren't as rushed.

You'll hear a wide-range of vocal style from SA Martinez who sings more than he raps in this album.

As with 311's earlier albums, you may need to listen to this album a few times to digest it; but once you do, you'll be hooked! The album's single, "Don't Tread On Me," and the song "Frolic Room" are irresistibly catchy.

"Solar Flare," a beefed-up "Hydroponic" that's reminiscent of "Omaha Stylee" is the hardest-sounding song on the album that you'll either love or hate.

"Whisky and Wine" and "Getting Through To Her" will instantly become favorites.

Look forward to hearing "It's Getting OK Now," a collaboration between guitarist Tim Mahoney and vocalist Martinez.

"Long For The Flowers" sounds amazing, musically, but the lyrics may leave you cringing.

"There's Always an Excuse" sounds as repetitive as Evolver's "Same Mistake Twice" but makes a great caboose for the album.

My only complaint is that the album is way too short! (Only 37 min long!)

Free Music Review: T&P&N&C and SA especially, have done it again
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all, I'm am a longtime fan. 311 is and has been the best band on this earth in my opinion. That being said, I was looking very forward to this album of course. My initial reaction was one of slight disappointment. Boy! Was I being short-sighted. This is a fabulous album. Observations of the album that are surprising if you are familiar with their previous works are that Doug "SA" Martinez does a lot more singing as a lyricist on this album than the others. He nails his notes and really conveys the proper emotions through his voice. Also, contrary to the overall make-up of previous albums, where most of the tracks were the up-tembo rockers and the reggae influenced mellow tracks were scattered throughout, "DTOM" is mostly mellow with the rock scattered. This made me initially disappointed but the album is just so well executed, that you accept it this way. Tim Mahoney, the lead guitarist, provides his best performance to date. His riffs run the spectrum from the carribean chill ones to the head bangers. His performance is near perfect and he has killer guitar solos. Basically, another great album, give it multiple listens and the classic 311 sound will be evident. My favorite track is "Frolic Room", an uptempo song about being in the club/bar scene. The album could have used one more uptempo track with a rap vocal delivery and it would be perfect, but that is just nitpicking. Buy it. Now.

Free Music Review: hey. it's 311
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll admit when i first listened to this CD i was a bit "confused", but thats how 311 is. There will be a couple of songs that really jump out at you. Then as time goes on different songs will jump out at you, until the entire record is a favorite. So don't just listen once and give up on the record.

This CD does seem a little more politcaly based to me. But the fact of the matter is that 311 is grown up. They're not just the little teenagers smoking and singing about pot that we all fell in love with early in the early 90s. All the people who say that their lyrics have gone down? Give me a break. Compare the lyrics to any song from "Don't Tread on Me" to the lyrics of "F*** the Bulls***"

"My names not Betty or Teddy, but Nick
And I'm not a hick with a head tick
Though I am from Nebraska"
From F*** the Bulls*** (Music)

It's not hard to tell indeed they have matured. Don't get me wrong I love Music and Grassroots as much as the next 311 fan. But none the less the writing is in no way worse.

Songs that jumped out at first listen. Whiskey & Wine, Long for the Flowers, Frolic Room, It's Getting OK Now, Solar Flare, and Thank Your Lucky Stars.

The thing that most surprised me on this CD is how good SA sounds. Normally i end up liking Nick's parts better, but on this album i think SA really shines.
