Free Music Notes for From ChaosFree Music Review: This album rocks Hit: 5 Stars
311 is a premier band in our day and age, and they stand apart from a lot of musical acts that are out there and creating waves. I believe they nailed their sound with this record, and I commend them for doing such a good job by recording it live. The rock songs are energetic, the ballads are lovely, and I can tell they are having a blast playing them. That's all I can really ask for when I anticipate a new album from these guys. They come up with song ideas that are good, melodies that are refreshing, while fusing many styles with funk and zest.
It's amazing that they've been around this long, surviving under the spotlight of media criticism that circulates and stabs what it basically doesn't understand (in the form of 311). In the end it's all about what you like, and what your personal taste is (like if someone hates steak, who are they to tell you not to eat it?). Not everyone can enjoy 311, while others revel in their majesty. I like to consider myself enlightened to their work, and feel very fortunate to have found them in my life.
This record feels like a revamp of some of their older albums at times (especially on the first track "You get worked"), but it still carries a flavor that is fresh and welcoming to the ears of a loyal fan. Sort of, here's something new, but here's something we know you'll love. You get the best of both worlds.
Ron St. Germain produced what is the sixth album from 311, and he seems to bring out the best in them (he is said to have been jumping around while they were laying down tracks in the studio). He produced the "blue album" in 1995 which was 311's biggest commercial success, and I believe they wanted to recapture some of that magic and optimism that they were feeling a few years ago. Before then they had been virtually unknown to most radio stations or MTV, so they sort of made it big with him. I think bringing Saint aboard really gave them an edge this time around.
If you pick apart the music, listening to the guitar riffs, the bass lines, the drum beats, and the subtle programming in the background, you will understand how hard 311 worked on this album. I really enjoy their lyrics, which are positive and inspiring, much like the words of an old friend. They keep me going when sometimes no other mediums can. There's a real connection I feel. I can only hope that they continue their musical journey and bring ear candy to all of their "enlightened ones" in the years to follow. It will be interesting to see where they go with their sound. With this band, so much is possible.
Free Music Review: Super Awesome album Hit: 5 Stars
I will have to admit this album rocks!!! but people make it out to be way above everything else they have done. thats wrong, i would just as soon pop this album in as i would soundsystem or grassroots or any of their albums. everything they put out is great. heres my break down of the album.1. You Get Worked 7/10- Even though this song has a catchy chorus and good lyrics i usually skip over it because of what else this album has to offer. 2. Sick Tight 10/10- This song is really awesome, great chorus melody and its just saying that 311 is sick tight. 3. You Wouldn't Believe 7/10- This song is definately not one of the albums stronger points, i think they used it to draw new "pop culture" fans in to the 311 vibe, dont get me wrong I like the song. 4. Full Ride 5/10- For some reason i just cant get into this song, it drags in tempo or something, still has a catchy chrous. 5. From Chaos 10/10- One of my favorites on the album, awsome regge style singing and clever lyrics make this song everything that it is. 6. I Told Myself 10/10- I can relate this song to Beautiful Disaster, its the first 311 song that poped into my head when i heard this one, simular style i guess. This song has some awesome old school rap beats in it! 7. Champange 10/10- Nice slow song with cool grove gutair during the chorus. What I got out of this song is how most chicks are unhappy no matter how you treat them, you are too nice and they get upset so you treat them lightly and they still get upset. 8. Hostile Apostile 9/10- Another strong point on the album, lyrics make this song what it is, but i think the intro could be a bit stronger. 9. Wake Your Mind Up 10/10- This song uses a common chord sequence as the rythum gutair and its very catchy, my friends and I usually play this for a first time 311 listener. 10. Amber 10/10- Exellant song with lots of time and effort. I could listen to is all day, but i wouldnt call it Hexum's best song to date, i still find Use of Time from transistor to be my favorite rock melody. 11. Uncalm 11/10- This song goes above and beyond what 311 fans deserve to hear, i consider this song a pure gift and im thankful that the band released it. Whats with the lyrics though?? 12. I'll Be Here a While 10/10- A Nice old school ska song will get anyone going and this was an exellant way to wrap up the album... way to go guys

Free Music Review: Critics!?! Hit: 5 Stars
It seems to me critics cannot be trusted very often these days when it comes to music. They'll dissapoint you either way. You'll find a review that raves so loud that you buy the CD only to be extremely dissapointed, or their "critique" fails miserably to understand the music you want to hear. Critics want more and more bands to go mainstream! What gives? It makes you wonder if they ever listen to the radio these days or the mainstream bands they rave about. Are we all to become slaves ot the cloners of music they call "must hear bands"? After all, I thought the syle and meaning of 311 music was to avoid anything and everything to do with mainstream. Can you imagine what would have happened if James Brown, Little Richard, P-Funk, or Nirvana and many others were to have gone mainstream? James Brown would be known for soul pop instead of funk, Little Richardd would have sung gospel, P-Funk would have disco records, and Nirvana would sound like Live or Soundgarden. Why sound like someone else when you can sound like no one else, and invent your own genre! 311 "From Chaos" is the prime example of 311 originality because it isn't mainstream. Are we supposed to hope that in the next 311 album they invite Christina Agulara to do backup vocals or Eminem to substitute the rap lyrics of S. A. Martinez!? What a concert that would be! "From Chaos" gives the opportunity to throw away the popular radio garbage of today and listen to truly funky bass of P. Nut and original music of 311. It will give "clarity" to your music listening from the "chaos" that is the music industry today. After all, "From chaos comes clarity..." Let the critics, radio stations, and MTV dull your mind with their reccomended "Grammy Award Winning" crap of today, or listen to the more or less underground blues, punk , jazz, reggae style of 311 and others in the category like Sublime, and even Dave Matthews. You'll love the truly rigid sound of "Sick Tight"; "I Told Myself"; and "Hostile Apostle" with amazing funk bass and guitar, and the smoother reggae blues style of "Champagne" and "Amber". Dont Be fooled by the critics, listen to the real fans, check out the website (311.com), and as always, listen for yourself. You wont be giving this CD away, or any other 311 CD for that matter!
Free Music Review: Aging with clarity.... Hit: 5 Stars
First things first. 311, singer Nick Hexum,Chad Sexton,"SA" Doug Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney and thunder bassist P-Nut are a good time positivity driven group that in no way is going for the whole angst/rap/rock trend (Bizkit,Roach,etc.). So, get that out of your head, and lets not try to draw comparisons between them. After breaking it big in 1996 with their self titled disk that spurred the frat party anthems "Down" and "All mixed up", 311 is back with their long awaited 6th major label release, titled "From Chaos". Right from the opening chord of "You get worked" you see that this is not the same uninspired group that tossed out the overproduced and methodically drone "Soundsystem" in 1999. This is a recharged, more mature and confident unit that has never sounded better and tighter as a group. Which is saying something, based on their reputation of being one of the best live acts out there. While blending all the better elements of rock, rap, reggae, ska and pure funk, 311 along with "Blue" album producer Ron Saint, may have finally created the signature disk of their catalog. It is suprisingly strong all the way through, with highlights being the soon to be live staple,"Sick tight" and the ultra-melodic "Amber". Every song has some hook that will be revolving around your head for days. Of course, not all is sunny on the 311 front, "You wouldnt believe", the first single, sounds like a throw away from the "Soundsystem" sessions, and Nicks vocals do have a tendency to be too flat for casual listeners tastes. But, both vocalists make a fairly strong showing in this album, with both rhyme skills, and singing range. All in all, if your already part of the excitable 311 fans, then you were very pleased on June 19th, and if not, then you may be soon, once these break through to radio. Overall, this album does "rock",and it has some great hooks, with some laid back Jamaica inspired moments to keep you smiling.
