As the 6th, and much anticipted release of those spunky and harmonious boys from Omaha.....they have done it again. Many are comparing this album to the likes of their self-titled album, better known as the "blue album". However, I believe they are only comparing it in this way because that is the CD many are most familiar with. Their best known release "Down" breaking onto the scene in 95, but not having another popular single until "Flowing" and now we come upon "You Wouldn't Believe." Yes, they are back with "blue album" producer Ron St. Germain which is assuredly making a huge difference. However, they are still the old boys us hivers have grown to know and love. Admittedly this is one of 311's cleanest releases. Albums such as Transistor and Soundsystem were burdened down with studio effects and touch-ups. One word that can descride this album from start to finish is clean. The clarity of songs such as "Amber" and "Champagne" help us to respect the beautiful harmonies of Nick Hexum and Essay Martinez. The guitar styilings of Tim Mahoney, the precision of bassist P-Nut and the true rythem of drummer Chad Sexton make this album a true diamond in the rough. Where we are plagued with angst riddled music that we consider "main stream", we can now sit back and bask in the glow of the positive message that is thrown upon us. We can also rock out to the beats of songs like "Sick Tight" and "Full Ride". Though this album may leave many wanting for more, you have to respect that the guys in 311 wanted to make a "Sick Tight" CD. One where they felt it gave the fans the exact perfection they had been waiting for. As a never ending fan of 311 and a BB'er (a member of their online website), I have to say we all got exactly what we have been wating for since Soundsystem. When you listen to this CD "You Get Worked." Now what other "main stream" band can say that??
Free Music Review: From 311 Comes Another Amazing Album Hit: 5 Stars
People that don't know about 311's music will say that they had their day in 1995 with the release of their self titled (blue) album, what they don't know is that it's their weakest album and there are better albums before and after. From Chaos is definately one of their best albums ever, like any band should they keep getting better as time goes on, the song writing on From Chaos is great, the vocals from Nick and SA are awesome, Tim Mahoney continues to show his extreme talent without over playing, when he is technically able to, PNut's bass playing is something of envy as usual, and Chad's drumming is insane. With this album it seems as if they rediscovered thier roots and updated them, this is evident with songs such as You Get Worked and Sick Tight, they sound like vintage 311. The guitar harmonies on I Told Myself sounds similar to that of Beautiful Disaster. Songs such as From Chaos and You Wouldn't Believe are great, and both really uptempo with awesome lyrics and catchy melodies. Theres really only one dissapointing song on the album and that's Full Ride, I don't know what they were thinking with that one but it definately ranks up their with some of their worst songs, and in my opinion they only have 3. Another high point of the album are the slower songs Champagne and Amber, the latter which became somewhat of a hit in the spring/summer of 2002, both excellent songs that show off the band. Wake Your Mind Up which was cowritten with the Pharcyde is an amazing track, completely upbeat really catchy, with an astounding bass solo at the end of the song. The album closes with two amazing songs as well, Uncalm which is one of the moodiest songs they've ever recorded, could definately be an outtake from Transistor and the acoustic I'll Be Here A While which is a song Nick wrote years before there even was a 311, and they recorded it for this album, and it's the perfect way to close what is another amazing piece of plastic from one the most amazing bands ever....311
Free Music Review: Best album ever made by any artist in 2001!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is so good that I'm still not tired of the album after listening to this album daily since its release date on June 19,2001. This album is so sick tight. You get Worked- Many old school fans like this track, its sound a lot Freak Out(on first album,Music). It brings out an old-school vibe. Sick TIght- Just like the song, this song is so sick tight and heavy. You wouldn't believe- This song is a great song but sits back as one of my least favorites in the CDs but I love the chorus. Full Ride- I have to admit, I didn't like the song at first but it does grow on you and now I groove to the song everytime with its funky bass. From Chaos- One of the strongest tracks-infectious pre-chorus and the lyrics and so meaningful by SA and Nick. Their so great and tight together I told myself- Metal-type riff in the chorus is really infectious with NIcks heavy voice. I can relate with this song. Champagne- Soft song that is really mellow, SA's voice really comes out in this track, great message, I can also relate to this song. Hostile Apostle- NOt a fan of this song, it sounds redundant but it does grow on you Wake your mind up- I love this song, its so hard-rocking and the rapping by Nick and SA is so tight, they feed off each other. Amber- Best song in the album, its so mellow and beautiful. This song can be a great summer single. Nick's voice is so mellow is so relaxing. Uncalm-The dancehall beats is a first and ecletic of the band. Great love song, this song can get you grooving. I'll be here awhile- I love this song, the ska beat with the mellow voices of Nick and SA just makes this song a so infectious. Really pay attention to this song, the message of Nick's life can really help out. This band will survive as Nick sings out in the song, I will survive.
Free Music Review: This cd ROCKS!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I went into the CD store the other day with no intention of buying "From Chaos." I actually didn't even know that it had come out. Nevertheless, I saw it at a listening station and I decided to check it out. This was the first time I had ever heard it and I was so impressed with the first couple of tracks that I decided to listen to the whole thing. The great thing about it though is that it didn't let down after the first couple of tracks it just got better and better. This whole cd is great! I can only think of one song on it that isn't totally awesome. Some of the riffs these guys create are just so sweet. This cd makes me want to get up and dance or get into a mosh pit and throw down. But, it also has some mellow and beautiful moments ("Champagne", "Amber", and "I'll Be Here Awhile"). I like how they balanced the cd out by making the first half of it primarily hard core, and then the second half has alot of mellow reggae beats that are just BEAUTIFUL in every way. In my opinion this CD is the best that 311 has ever made because all the songs are good and it is so well-balanced. This CD is also "enhanced" which means you can put it into your PC and you can see interviews with the band members. There is also a trailer for the documentary "Enhanced To Show Detail 2" which comes out in November on DVD and VHS. Everyone should get this CD because it is such a great musical gift to all of us from the five men that make up the band known as 311. By the way the lady who wrote the review about how this CD doesn't break any musical ground is wrong. Maybe she needs to listen to songs like "Uncalm" and "I told Myself" a few more times and then maybe she'll get it. This cd just plain rocks!
Free Music Review: It grows on you! Hit: 5 Stars
When I heard 311's new single "You Wouldn't Believe", I knew that 311 was back. I was hoping this album would be heavier, more "old school" than Soundsystem and Transistor. From the first track to the last, this album is perfect the entire way. Well, ALMOST perfect. It took me awhile to pick apart every song, but i realize a few problems with this CD. Still more creative than most bands, 311's lyrics on "From Chaos" are good, but a little shallow compared to 311's past albums. The guitar work is a bit choppy, somewhat lacking the regular flow on past albums. Nick Hexum's voice is slightly flat on a few tracks, including "I Told Myself", and "I'll Be Here Awhile". Its not very noticable. "Sick Tight" is a classic 311 song, fast paced, "Head-rushing", blended style type of song. "You Wouldn't Believe" was a good choice for a first single. "From Chaos" is a cool song, I hope it will be the next single. It has SA rapping and Nick's smooth vocals, not at all flat on this track. "Amber" is the song making fans go crazy. I'm not sure why, I didn't find anything truly "great" about it. "Uncalm" sounds like something off of Transistor. All in all, this album is really good no matter what amazon's editor says (she's crazy). 311 is always breaking new ground! (Tell me if you ever heard a song like "From Chaos" on any other 311 album). This album is great, buy it and you won't be disappointed. Also try the self-titled "Blue Album" if you want to get hooked on 311. If you don't like this album at first, don't worry. Some of the songs take a little listening to get to like them, then you're hooked!
