Free Music Notes for From ChaosFree Music Review: From Chaos Comes Clarity Hit: 5 Stars
Those funk-rock gods from my hometown of Omaha, Nebraska have done it again. With tighter melodies, a new concoction of sounds, and producer Ron Saint Germain at the helm, 311 has created what may end up being their best album to date. Opening up with "You Get Worked" and flowing right into "Sick Tight", 311 clearly had a pre-meditated layout for this album. Songs like "Champange" and "Amber" (which in my humble opinion is one of their best songs to date) are a throwback to 1997's Transistor, while songs like "Full Ride" and "Uncalm" hint more towards the band's earlier albums like 1995's self-titled breakout album, and their first studio album, "Music". Lead Singers/Songwriters Nick Hexum and S.A. (Doug) Martinez flourish on the album with bits of wisdom like "from chaos comes clarity" and "she wants to love me with threats". They also mix very well, whether one be rapping and the other singing or vice-versa, but the real treat is when both let go on the mellow(er) tracks and sing in utterly perfect harmony. "You Wouldn't Believe" and the title track "From Chaos" will also usher new fans into the world of 311, and songs like "I Told Myself" and "Hostile Apostle" will keep the old hivers (311 slang for fans) jumping to the beat. With Mahoney's eclectic power chords, drummer Chad Sexton's refined beats, P-Nut's pounding basslines, and Hexum and Martinez at the helm, 311 can truly say "I'll Be Here Awhile", because with an album like this, the only direction is up. Be expecting platinum, and be expecting airplay. Omaha Stylee is back, and it's not going anywhere.
Free Music Review: 311 KICKS IT HARDCORE IN FROM CHAOS!!! Hit: 5 Stars
You know as well I as do that 311 changes they're stylee up just a little in each album. Sometimes for the better. Other times for the much better. Well, I have to say I was first in line for this CD, and really didn't know what to expect. In fact I was nervous that, for some reason, I would be dissappointed with this new album. I don't know, call it the Tool/Lateralus-/-Phantom Menace-/- Pearl Jam JINX. Things get to perfect, and then they flop under the weight of their own success. Well I listened to this CD at top volume, and was utterly and unbelievably amazed around every corner, every change up, every chord, every free style. I WAS NOT LET DOWN!!! This is a crazy, loud, dance it up, throw-people-around-the-room album. Then later it chillllls. To be more specific, the first few trax of the album are VERY reminiscent of the first Rage Against the Machine album. Very hardcore and very catchy. Then comes along most definitly my favorite 311 song I think I've ever heard. Track 4. Full Rice. Oh my God. Just listen to it, it rocks out. The rest of the album, swings and grooves and jams and swings some more. You all (maybe know that it is possible to group 311 CD's together. I mean, there's the Grassroots/Music era. Then there's the Soundsystem/Transistor era. In between is the 311 self titled era, which really stood alone. Crazy enough, I'd rate this new album FROM CHAOS in right with the self titled album (ya know, if I HAD to pick, if a gun was to my head, and to give you die hard fans a good idea what to expect). So if you liked the self titled album, you'll love this new one. Stand out tracks are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, & oh yeah, 12. Email me with comments: ....Peace ya'll.
Free Music Review: 311 Will Always Deliver Hit: 5 Stars
I found this record to be one of their most appealing. All of the songs make your energy flow and the lyrics make you think. I would have liked to have heard more bass from P-Nut and more singing from SA but their music is definetly getting better. I wasn't a huge fan of Grassroots, it didn't grab me lyrically (I'm not into all the rap), but the music was astounding. What is great about this band is they have so many ranges and they stay true to their words (Come Original). They realize that their fans will move with them, whatever kind of music they make. I believe that 311 isn't even capable of making poor music. Tim is wonderful on the guitar (solos on albums like Transistor are amazing live), P-Nut has so much energy on the bass (nobody can jump around like him), Chad is very talented (Applied Science-the man can go forever!), Nick's voice is very soothing (his emotion is so raw), SA can rap spin (not to mention run around stage), this bad has everything, what more could you ask for? Songs like "Uncalm" and "I'll Be Here Awhile" display great use of voice and guitar. Yet, they can still rock out with songs like "Sick Tight", "Full Ride" and "Wake Your Mind Up". They made another memorable song that every 311 fan loves Dearly, "Amber". Everyone feels a connection with that song. Last time 311 was at the Nautica Stage, I was there and it was the first time they played the song live. The crowd went crazy and everyone was so happy. I thikn their song writing is still as wonderful as it was before, especially how descriptive the lyrics can be in "Amber" and "Uncalm". Their music will always keep the positive energy flowing.
Free Music Review: Better Than I Can Say Hit: 5 Stars
You just have to listen to From Chaos. All the way through. Several times. After you have done this, any 311 fan or just someone giving the band a test drive will love the cd. You will want to hear it in the near future when you get other cd's and 311's been absent in your rotation for a few weeks. That is the beauty of this album. It grows on you with time, and that is because 311 brought everything they've ever done to the studio and put it all on 12 tracks. 12 tracks that range from old school 311 hardcore to mega-soft reggae stuff, with no guitar distortion. (...) However, if you don't like this cd you are most likely (...): Someone who hasn't listened to 311's other work (not just the singles), and someone who definitely is not a 311 fan. Those are the only people I can think of (save fans of other genres) that would find this cd a "rehash" of old material. 311 has some of the most talented musicians I've heard (okay, P-Nut is not exactly Flea or Fieldy even), but Chad Sexton is one of the few drummer's that allow me to identify the band the second the drums come in. Too many bands these days have these drums that all sound the same, and it's so bland. On top of that, drummers everywhere are trying to imitate Carter Beauford (cough cough, Creed, cough cough). Guitarists, well Tim is just something special. SA and Nick's vocal styles clash very nicely, and they both even do other things sometimes, like manning the turntables or a second guitar. Okay, I'm through 311 is amazing buy the cd see them live blah blah 311 rules.
Free Music Review: Exquisite and flawless work Hit: 5 Stars
Allow me to express how in awe I am right now. Got the point? I shall begin my review of 'From Chaos'.Although I've always admired 311 and liked a few of their songs here and there, I never became what you would probably consider a complete "fan" until a few months ago. I got three of their albums ('Evolver', 'Soundsystem', and 'Transistor') last month and was extremely impressed, especially with 'Soundsystem'. I remembered loving "You Wouldn't Believe" and "Amber", and wanted to purchase the 'From Chaos' album. After a month of looking for it, I found it today...and my CD collection will never be the same. I don't see what this negativity is about - this is a BEAUTIFUL album. Not only is 311 the most original band out there, this album just flows. I am ecstatic about it. I can see this becoming one of my favorite CDs of all time. I like every song on here (that's rare). Standouts are "Amber" (I still haven't gotten sick of it), "You Wouldn't Believe", "Uncalm", and "Champagne." Tim Mahoney is among the best guitarists I've ever heard and even though many reviews on here proclaimed Nick Hexum's voice to be monotone, I find it to be beautiful and soothing. All in all, a wonderful album. Amazing. I recommend it to anyone - 311 fan, not 311 fan, someone who's never HEARD of 311 - ANYBODY. This album is perfection and I'm not sure how I've went this long without it.
