Free Music Notes for From ChaosFree Music Review: From Chaos completely redefines 311's sound. Hit: 5 Stars
When I first bought this album and listened to it, I was displeased because I was expecting a similar sound to their previous albums like Grassroots, Live, and Soundsystem. However, the second and third times I listened, I realized how ingenious 311 really was to make such a great album. Songs like You Get Worked, Sick Tight, and Full Ride have such great rapping and funky rhythms. Meanwhile, there's a new element that wasn't seen before except in Soundsystem- MELODY! I Told Myself, From Chaos, Amber, and I'll Be Here Awhile all have excellent harmony. This album was an excellent surprise to surpass all of the stale/repetitive rap created by groups today. I wouldn't be surprised if 311's next album is even more edged toward melody, harmony, and has a lighter feel. But, this album is great because it still has that funky feel with the great rhythms in addition to excellent harmonies, brilliant rapping, and some meaningless, non-depressing lyrics. I strongly suggest that you buy this CD or listen to some of the sample clips.
Free Music Review: Funk-Rap Fusion Hit: 5 Stars
311 is back in form - they've always had a hip, goofy edge to their music, which can be a dangerous thing as it can delve into the cheesy (um, that AI song on Soundsystem?). They've also been a powerful fusion band from the beginning, incorporating funk, metal, rap, reggae, even jazz into some of their recordings. This album represents a step up on the fusion line, and perfects their fun edge without being silly. I've only listened to it a couple of times, but overall I'd say it is a great, new-sounding album that should put Omaha, Nebraska (or is it L.A. now?) back on the map. Honestly, this album shows growth in the same way that Pearl Jam's progression of albums does. If you're looking for 311's best album, I'd probably suggest Music, but I think this effort is awesome - you really have to hear it to understand how a seemingly passe genre (i.e., rap-rock) can still take new directions and make some exciting, exotic-ally flavored music.
Free Music Review: Still Fresh Hit: 5 Stars
This being their 6th album on a major label, it impresses me immensely that these guys are always coming up with something new. A must for any die hard fan. I also recommend to newer fans to take a listen to the most underrated band of the 90's, in my opinion. For some reason this really has a Blue Album feel to it for me. Its got a few reggae songs but mostly hardrocking stuff. Lyrically, it could be the best out of all their albums. I'm really liking what they're saying in the songs, the way they're touching on human emotions. Sick Tight is going to be f---ing awesome to hear on tour. Uncalm also really rocks. Amber is a reggae tune that I really dig, & I Told Myself is so catchy its ridiculous. And of course, You Wouldn't Believe, is amazing. These are my favorites but really I like them all. All in all, I think with a new label promoting them and a single blowin up the charts, its going to be a good year for 311.
Free Music Review: 311 - The masters of the rap rock sound! All hail the KINGS Hit: 5 Stars
I will be brief. I don't want to take up too much of your time. Let me first say that 311 do not get their props for this rap rock revolution. They were there in the beginning kicking it hardcore. Now bands like Limp Bizkit yell and scream their way to the top of the charts with no talent to back it up.The new 311 album is their tightest yet. They have teamed up with the producer of their self-titled and best know album (the blue one for the non-fans!) This album is a great showcase for the muscianship that is contained within the band. Their instruments are all over the place. P-Nut is a bass genius on this record. What sets 311 apart from the other bands on this album is that they are not afraid of a groove or some nice harmony between Nick and SA. Its music, not just harsh noice. This is the tightest album of 311's career and one of the best of the year. I urge you to buy this album. You won't regret it!!
Free Music Review: Coming Full Circle...Sort Of Hit: 5 Stars
I started listening to 311 back when their first CD, Music, came out. I am continually impressed with the musicality expressed by this team of clever music makers. I own all their albums and find this to be worthy of the 311 stamp. When I bought this I was expecting an album more closely linked to Soundsystem. While Soundsystem was a good CD, it had too much electronic processing to really satisfy my craving for organic grooves first established on Music and Grassroots. Fourtunately, I discovered that this album was much more like a Grassroots Part II. It has a similar vibe but features less reggae softness. Also, this album could be described as the Blue Album with far more musicmanship displayed in such a way that was reminiscent of Grassroots. In conclusion, they sound enough like 311 to be satisfying to the casual listener, but they display enough rap/funk/rock virtuousity to be satisfying to hard core fans.
