Free Music Notes for GrassrootsFree Music Review: 311's finest hour. Hit: 5 Stars
NOTE: I am actually 16 years old, I just don't want to sign up.
One of the things about me is that I like the kind of alternative rock where the musicians mix things up a bit and combine genres into one flavorful sound, and these guys, along with Sublime (who also rule) are the stars of that kind of music. Either way, I find this to be 311's best album because it shows the band at their most talented and where everything unique about them comes together at its best. Don't believe me? Read on.
The first track "Homebrew" has a killer guitar riff courtesy of Tim Mahoney, and "Lucky" has a great hook. My favorite song on here is "Nutsymptom" as it's very heavy, and halfway through, P-Nut showcases some mad slap bass skills, and Mahoney takes over with a Santana-like guitar solo. Also, "8:16 AM" is a nice, mellow track, and what you've heard about "Applied Science" is true, Chad Sexton performs a drum solo, and although it isn't very technical, it fits the music perfectly and it's nice to know it's there. "Taiyed", although short, has some nice bass work, and "Grassroots (the title track)" shows perfect synergy of genres. We can't forget the jazzy reggae ballad "Lose", and "1,2,3" is a great way to end the album. I didn't list all of the tracks because I didn't want to spoil everything for you, but what I can tell you is that all of the songs on here are great, so you will not be needing the skip button.
I have been listening to this album a lot lately, and it never gets old or tiresome, and it works great for whatever mood you are in, which adds to its greatness. So all in all, if you want some awesome rock music that blows everything on the radio out of the water, then pick up this album now. Not only is it the best album of 1994, it deserves to be considered one of the top 10 albums of the 1990s. It is that good.
LONG LIVE 311!!!!
Free Music Review: The definitive 311 album! Hit: 5 Stars
The Blue Album and From Chaos may have been the two most commercial 311 albums, but for the ravenous fans from 311's underground days, Grassroots was, is, and always will be the ultimate 311 experience. The songwriting and musicianship on this record are already a huge step up from the previous album Music, and nearly every single track is a 311 classic! This is the one where their sound really came together, and every song on the album is included in their live set to this day, (which can't be said about any other album they made). Includes:
Homebrew: 311 classic about tripping on acid on July 4th 10/10
Lucky: The weakest track on the disc in my opinion, still has some nice grooves though 5/10
Nutsyptom: Heavy grooves with great rap, leads into a nice bass/guitar jam 9/10
8:16 AM: Nice jazzy laid back tune, adds a lot of diversity to the record 10/10
Omaha Stylee: Quintessential 311 song, great tune 8/10
Applied Science: Performed at every 311 show due to the drum solo, and some very nice riffs as well 9/10
Taiyed: Very short tune, nothing special but not too hard on the ears 7/10
Silver: Perhaps the heaviest tune on the disc, not bad at all/ 8/10
Grassroots: Title track, stating 311 has grassroots 8/10
Lose: Very slow chill out kind of tune , very nice break from the heaviness 9/10
Salsa: Good rock/reggae transitions on this tune. Lyrics are pretty funny, I like it a lot 9/10
Six: Almost my favorite, the middle section really shows just how great 311 really is 10/10
Offbeat Bareass: My favorite tune on the disc. Amazing grooves, beats, rap, this is what 311 is all about 10/10
123: Very chill trippy closer. Great end to a great record 10/10
This is still one of the best offerings to date from this incredible band. I recommend all their albums, but this one captures their essence the best. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: 311's sophomore release is their best so far!!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
AHHHHH the sweeet sound of 311's best album Grassroots. When the boys of 311 came out with this album in 1994 they really hit the jackpot and could have retired right there but thank god they didn't. This cd is such a great album to party to, to chill to or do whatever. It's very polished for a sophomore album too. Includes classics like Omaha Stylee, Homebrew, Lose and 1,2,3. here's a track by track analysis: 1.Homebrew (5/5) one of the best on the cd. great melodic opener!! 2.Lucky (5/5)just as good as homebrew 3.Nutsymptom (4/5)A great song jsut doesn't do as much for me as the prior two songs. a real headbanger and like the weird intro b4 it breaks rite into SAs rapping. 4.8:16AM (5/5)Wow a layed back chilling masterpiece 5.Omaha Stylee (5/5) My sec fav song on the cd. long intro breaks into rocking melodic beat 6.Applied Science (5/5) great beginning...mosh pit masterpiece..then a long but awesome drum solo followed by more rockin guitar and vocals 7.Taiyed (5/5) i love the sound of the guitar in this song. great for chilling 8.Silver (5/5) hard rocker..will get beginning riff stuck in your head for hours 9.Grassroots (5/5) awesome song complete with a rockin beat and reggae beat 10.Salsa (4/5) good song 11.Lose (5/5) i love this song. i was obsessed with the nice laid back beat forever before i moved on the other songs. jsut an excellent tune 12.Six (5/5) aweomse melodic song 13.Offbeat Bare-ass (4/5) hardest song on the album. got 4 out of 5 because the vocals don't soudn rite wit the flow of the song. 14.1,2,3 (5/5) MY fav on the cd. 311 def saved the best for last in this case. Free Music Review: Underated and Misunderstood Musical Geniuses Hit: 5 Stars
Despite the financial limitations placed on the production sharpness, Grassroots is 311's most ecletic and in my opionion the best album the band has ever done. Here 311 has mastered and perfected their quick yet smooth rapping. Songs like "Silver" and "Salsa" showcase Nick Hexum and SA Martinez's slickest and quickest lyrical rampages. However, the album has plenty upbeat and trippy melodies as well in songs like "Homebrew", and "Omaha Stylee". The songs are lyrically powerfull, touching on the importance of optimism, self-respect, and making the most of life. While this may seem like silly feel-good bubblegum content, 311 is able to deliver their neo-hippy idealism through a sonic storm of hip-hop, rock, reggae, latin beats, and revolutionary rhythm. No other band out there has the fast and dynamic rhythm that 311 has. Tim Mahoney's guitar work on this album is more free and jamming than on any other 311 album. If you like intelligent and positive songs that rock hard and get you groovin, 311's Grassroots is the cd for you. Even though this cd came out 1994, it still holds up with 311's newer stuff and with the rest of today's music. This album and 311 in general are often forgotten as being the best and most creative representation of hybrid music.
Free Music Review: It all starts here! Hit: 5 Stars
Why don't you have this CD?! Well, OK, some of you probably have never heard of this album, the band, or the revolutionary Omaha Stylee these guys came up with, so I'll cut you some slack. But, now that you know about it (once you read the reviews of this work of genius) you will have to make it a part of your music collection, whatever it may be. 311 starts here, and there is no turning back, and no telling where you'll end up once you become engulfed in their original sound. To Music, Transistor, Soundsystem, Evolver, and beyond, you will be taken to a whole other realm of music. 311 has been secretly steering, and helping to push the rock genre along since the group's inception, and it is no wonder with a CD release such as this. You just can't conceptualize the sound of this album. The funk, the reggae, the jazz, blues, rap, and lyrics get you head bangin', groovin', and chillin' throughout the extent of the disc. 311 "Grassroots" is music history. It's a driving force for a new sound, new paradigm to music. Catch the wave of 311 "Grassroots", not because it is flashy, popular, or the norm (because it is far from). Catch it because you want different, upbeat, cool music to take you away.
