Free Music Review: The jewel in 311's crown
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought "Grassroots" in 1996 and still think it's their best work to date. The whole album has a slightly aggressive streak to it in comparison to their other albums but when they go mellow, they do so in a big way. "8.16am", "Lose" and the album closer "1,2,3..." could put you in a trance for hours. Conversely, "Homebrew", "Offbeat Bareass" and particularly "Omaha Stylee" will rock your brains out. Listening to it now the sound quality is pretty thin and weak - but for some reason that's part of its charm. Despite all the production and engineering flaws, "Grassroots" manages to get its point across. The same year "Grassroots" was released, Korn unleashed their debut which led to endless groups with superior sounding recordings (mainly to cope with the increased detuned air being pushed around) but with very little to say for themselves. Instead, 311 challenged convention and had fun at the same time. On the whole, I can't recommend this album enough. If you're feeling a little weary about the unintelligent ramblings of nu-metal posers, this (and 311 in general) will be a breath of fresh air.

Free Music Review: 311 Does It Again!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Usually the second album is NEVER as good as the first. But not with 311. They have the ability and talent to keep em goin without repeating the same exact sound they produced on the previous album. "Grassroots" is 311's second album. Their debut album "Music" was by far the best 311 album ever but "Grassroots" follows very close behind. In "Music" the main sound was hard rock/rap with a few funk/reggae songs. But the majorit was hard rock/rap. On "Grassroots" The funk is the highlight of the album. Starting off with the hard "Homebrew" and going on through 1 or 2 funk songs and then for some more hard rock. But by the 7th track is where the album turns almost completely funk (with the acception of track 10, Grassroots--which even at times brings out the funk/reggae sound throughout the song.) This CD is great for TRUE 311 fans that are looking for a diffrent style of 311 instead of ONLY looking for that hard rock/rap sound. Buy this album and you wont regret it. Also check out 311's other albums--they havn't made a bad one yet.

Free Music Review: Led Zeppelin of funk-hop
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard this album, I couldn't understand what it was that i was hearing. It is original in so many ways. The lyrics, the way it was recorded, the flows, the brilliant funk grooves, the off-beat drums, and the groove energy. I didn't know if what I heard was guitars, or programed riffs. It was all so new and original. I have been into this album for years because their is so much to explore. The rhyming is incredible. I can't even flow along with a lot of the lyrics still, and I've heard the album countless times. The subject matter is wise and very interesting. Their are many little hidden messages within the lyrics, but 311 does not preach at all, and convey their message in very colorfull and creative ways - like this lyric about staying grounded and stuctured in your expression- "the roots that grow underground are as big as the tree that you see, if not it will fall down." I could praise so many ways of this album, but if you feel like exploring something successfully experimental and outside of predictable, then pick up Grassroots.

Free Music Review: rap-rock... before Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park made it suck.
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes, rap-rock. Before bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were even concieved. And even longer before they ruined it. Buy this CD and hear 311 blow LB,LP,and any other rap-rock bands out of the ballpark. This album is fresh and original to this day, and its been out for almost a decade. On top of being a rap-ROCK album, this is a reggae flavored, alternative, hip-hop influenced, jazzy, psychadelic, canabis blazin' masterpiece. And even if you don't particularly like RAP-ROCK so much, you'll probably still like it because its not the run-of-the-mill, stereotypical rap-rock. Many hardcore 311 fans will tell you this is their favorite 311 album. Many of the songs off this CD are crowd-pleasing favorites at 311's live shows, and for good reason. They are great to jump up-and-down to, or just passively bob your head to. A must for fans of 311's blue album, and your 311 collection is lacking if you don't have this album yet. Bottom line : great CD. Do yourself a favor and go get it... now.

Free Music Review: 311 are and will always be the best
Hit: 5 Stars

This album, the Grassroots album, is just an example of how awesome 311 really are, songs like "Homebrew" will take over your mind and songs like "123" will bring you to your euphoria. This album is a little different from some of there other albums such as their "From Chaos", its more rap oriented, but it's friggin' awesome. Songs like: "Lucky", "Nut Symptom", and "Applied Science" really shine on Nick and SA's many vocal talents. One of my personal favorites, "123", is more mellow, but the lyrics and just the soothing sound of the song will put you at ease and put you in a better mood. If you don't have this album, please do yourself a huge favor and go buy it, you will not regret it, if your one of the 311 fans that got hooked from songs like "Amber" and "I'll be here awhile", this album is A LOT different, but I think anyone will enjoy this cd.........so um go buy it!
