Free Music Review: The roots that grow in the ground are as big as the tree
Hit: 5 Stars

THE TRILOGY OF DEBUT ALBUMS, 1993-1995

Music (1993)
Debut Trilogy Part 1: An original, energetic, raw, explosive fusion of rock, hip hop, funk, reggae and rap. About two-thirds of the songs are re-worked versions of the band's best songs from the Omaha years. The other third are butt-kicking new songs made just for this release. This album says, "This is what we can do."

Grassroots (1994)
Debut Trilogy Part 2: An exploration of their roots, a musical journey of growing up from the ground up. This album says, "This is where we came from."

311, "self-titled" or "the blue album" (1995)
Debut Trilogy Part 3: A crisp, tight, bold, definitive, well-oiled machine. This album says, "This is what we are."

These first three LPs are all tied for my favorite 311 album, and I admit my hard-hitting rap-rock bias. :-)

Free Music Review: 311 are and will always be the best
Hit: 5 Stars

This album, the Grassroots album, is just an example of how awesome 311 really are, songs like "Homebrew" will take over your mind and songs like "123" will bring you to your euphoria. This album is a little different from some of there other albums such as their "From Chaos", its more rap oriented, but it's friggin' awesome. Songs like: "Lucky", "Nut Symptom", and "Applied Science" really shine on Nick and SA's many vocal talents. One of my personal favorites, "123", is more mellow, but the lyrics and just the soothing sound of the song will put you at ease and put you in a better mood. If you don't have this album, please do yourself a huge favor and go buy it, you will not regret it, if your one of the 311 fans that got hooked from songs like "Amber" and "I'll be here awhile", this album is A LOT different, but I think anyone will enjoy this cd.........so um go buy it!

Free Music Review: 311's Best
Hit: 5 Stars

This cd is definately 311's best album, its contains the perfect mix of rock, reggae, and hip hop, and even a smidgin of jazz. All of the songs on the album reflect their unique style of music, and blend together almost seamlessly throughout the whole album. Songs like "8:16 am" show off that smidgin of jazz metioned before, while songs like "Applied Science" show off the influence of hip hop, and others like "Grassroots" show the reggae part of the band. Although this cd is only 311's sophmore effort it is their best effort as well. The band shows that it can be more melodic, and do more than rap the majority of the time. Overall this is an amazing cd that satisfied a lot of people, and gave the band a hit with "8:16 am"
So why don't you give it a spin, and come to appreciate the old sound of 311.

Free Music Review: One of the best albums of all time
Hit: 5 Stars

Among all of 311's albums (And I own and cherish them all) I think this one is the best. This album always blows me away everytime I listen to it and is where the core of my love for 311 lies. I know I've said I think Sublimes 40 oz to Freedom is the best album ever, but I want to say its a tie between these two. This is also an incredibly varied album with lots of different styles of songs, that are all genius. It's important to note that Tim solos on this album more than any other 311 album to date. It's always a treat to hear him solo and he has been the most inspiring to me as a guitar player myself. Props must be given to all band members in this album, the lyrics, the bass, the drums, are all incredible. I've heard many people say they love this one. It just rocks from start to finish. Get it.

Free Music Review: absolutely incredible, best of 311 right here
Hit: 5 Stars

this is by far my favorite 311 album although i do like music a lot as well. with many albums you hope to find one pearl of a track on, well this is the whole string right here. this album is so diverse, with every song bringing something new to the table. although its impossible to choose just one 'lose' is one of my favorite tracks. its a slower song with gutiar playing a reggae strum and has a super rad guitar solo. as another reviewer mentioned, the drum solo on applied science is absolutely ridiculous! all of the songs are completely irresistable. contrary to that one reviewer 311 is in no way a ripoff of sublime, which i am an even bigger fan of. yes they both fuse many styles of music together flawlessly but their approach and the result are completely different.
