Free Music Notes for Para TiFree Music Review: Maybe the second time out, he'll have faith in himself... Hit: 3 Stars
We were very excited about this album and put it in the car CD player within seconds after buying it. However, while the songs are of adequate quality and some have nice melodies, I must agree overall with those who say he's holding back on this album. The impression I had was that this man, for all his experience and talent in Latin music, didn't seem sure what to do with himself in writing explicitly Christian material.
"Avispas" comes the closest to the familiar JLG style, with a merengue rhythm and lyrics offering a humorous metaphor as assurance that God doesn't ignore those who harm people he loves (sending wasps to sting the tempter). The other songs tend toward the forgettable, as much for bland lyrics as for anything else. While we know JLG for his rhythms, his turn of a phrase and clever extended metaphors are also key to his success. How many people can write a romantic hit about bilirubin, for goodness' sake? Here on "Para Ti" there's the usual repetitive Christian vocabulary that you'd find on a standard worship album: love, praise, God, serve. Those all are important, but the most effective artists find new words to express these ancient concepts. JLG can do it, I think -- he just hasn't yet given himself permission.
We can only hope that after this first foray into directly Christian territory, he'll find a way to loosen up a little and use the verbal and rhythmic gifts God's given him, in a field that could use innovators like Juan Luis.
Free Music Review: Que pasa Juan Luis? Hit: 2 Stars
I am defintely a die hard fan of JLG ever since i heard his masterpiece "Bachata Rosa" way back in 1992. He is the one responsible for bringing Bachata into the limelight, before "Rosa" it was only heard in the lower class districts of Santo Domingo and NOT respected much by more conservative Dominicans. Today it may surpass merengue in the DR as the music of choice. JLG has certainly made other great albums since 1992, even his last LP was great and appropiately he won a Latin grammy. Ok, he took a 6 year hiatus, his longest ever, became Born Again and when i saw he had an album ready to drop, I was very EXCITED! Well, he has put out his most sugar coated, uninspired work EVER! I can't say it's because ALL of the subject matter is related to Jesus, instead of social issues and clever wordplay, but the MUSIC just lacks soul BIG TIME! The energy and enthusiasm is GONE, KAPUT, ZERO! Don't get me wrong I LOVE his slower songs and "baladas" songs like "Vivire" are among my favs but here it sounds like he was forced to put out the sappiest material imanginable. Some may say it's his conversion, could be, but i think he just tried and failed, the only good song that sounds like the TRUE JLG is the single "Las Avispas." Without that song this would be among the worst albums I've heard in a LOOOONG time. I gave it 2 stars cuz there are moments, more like flashes of TRUE JLG, but it is just MUY MUY MALO. I can only hope he comes to his senses and does what he does best on his next album...TEAR IT UP!
Free Music Review: Bottom line - do you like Christian music? Hit: 2 Stars
Do you like Christian Rock? What if one of your favorite groups came out with a Christian album, would you buy it?
If yes, and you have any interest in merengue, you'll like this CD. If no, the lyrics just don't interest you for whatever reason, then avoid this album.
I ordered this CD "blindly" thinking "all-right, Juan Luis Guerra has come out with a new album!", listened to it once thinking "what the heck?", and promptly gave it to my brother-in-law who happens to like Christian music. If he were giving this review, I'm sure he'll give it a 5. I'm giving it a 2 because, while the music is good, I just didn't care for the lyrics.
If you are at all interested in Juan Luis Guerra, and he does have some great albums out there, I recommend listening to "Ni es lo mismo, Ni es iqual" or "Arieto". If you are at all interested in Christian music, then by all means buy "Para Ti". It's just not my cup of tea.
Free Music Review: Worst CD by far to date - the man lost his way Hit: 2 Stars
How said that this the great Juan Luis Guerra has lost his way to become an unfortunate souless born again "Christian".
His music opened up hope and God with examining the beauty of the world and an appreciation of the love of the world and true spirituality.
No he has lost his vision in this self-centered CD that has lost all of the inspiring spirituality of his incredible work.
The arrangements are their, but the music is hollow and I wonder why he chose to go this way. For exceptance in this world of faith over actions and behaviors.
So sad ....
