Free Music Notes for Curtis AlbumFree Music Review: 50 Is Back & More Original Than Ever Hit: 5 StarsEveryone knows about "the battle" of the two biggest selling hip hop artist by now, that being 50 Cent and Kanye West. Their albums are being dropped on the same day. And with that Fiddy also dropped a famous quote that most people know by now, creating the battle of who is bigger and better. That quote being "If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I'll no longer write music. I'll write music and work with my other artists, but I won't put out anymore solo albums."
I am an unbiased listener and reviewer who buys both 50's and Kanye's albums, and respect both men. I have to say however that I know 50 Cent is the bigger artist and the better selling between the two. My predictions is that 50's third studio release "Curtis" will outsell Kanye's "Graduation". I had the opportunity to pick up both in Japan before they were released in the states because of the difference in time by 13 hours.
My report is that while Graduation is a tight album, there are no singles or songs on the record that just jump out at me and leave me breathless. It's the same game that has been done before, and Kanye has nothing new to offer his listeners. The same sound production and delivery of lyrics. Kanye is still sampling songs, especially old skool soul.
On the other hand 50 Cent comes at us fresh, with a new look and new take. Sha Money XL is nowhere to be found, and Dre and Eminem only each produced one song on the album. 50's music is all original working with a whole new team of various producers. His sound still remains hard though and lyrically he is still on top of his game. Many people were bootlegging both of these albums before their release. Maybe some of the songs are different and some remained the same, but it made me nervous because people were saying on both ends that both albums were a dissapointment. I am relieved to say that isn't the case with either. 50 Cent still sits in his throne as the king of New York and everyone is going to still try to knock him off top.
The introduction track sounds on Curtis sounds a lot like a Guy Ritchie movie such as "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", the excerpt isn't as memorable as a coin dropping but it is cool. It comes courtesy from a movie called "Shooters" in which you can hear some Londoners talking about guns and trying to make a firearm sell. The first song on the album "My Gun Go Off" gets the album off to a great start, as gritty as "In My Hood" from "The Massacre" but not as serious, and also every bit as good as "What Up Gangsta" from "Get Rich or Die Tryin'".
The third track "Man Down" is said to be Dre's favorite song off the album, the song has been censored for its coarse language, even on the explicit content version, a usual expected sound from 50. "I'll Still Kill" feat. Akon is a definitely a bangin' track. The beat is heavy and poundin'. I like Akon's vocals a lot, he provides for a great chorus, to me he is like the new Nate Dogg that appears everyone is trying to get him to lace the track with something smooth. Not the usual 50 song.
On "I Get Money" 50 is running New York. The music is a fusion of old skool music production with contemporary bass hits. Tight! "Come & Go" has Dre providing the hook on what sounds like a slower version of "What Up Gangsta". "Ayo Technology" produced by Timbaland and feat. Justin Timberlake is a fire song. This was a good choice for a single and it was a great video too. It's hot. This song is a prime example of exactly how different this entire album is from the prior releases. 50 is not coming at us with the same old retired, recycled garbage and it works so well.
"Follow My Lead" featuring Star Trak's Robin Thicke is the slow jam on the album for the girls to really appreciate, the keys are smooth as hell, this one has to be listened to.
"Mobin On Up" brings us back to a hardened New York style beat. Fiddy doesn't like to be called a "gangsta rapper" but this song is so gangsta.
"Straight to the Bank" The first single off the album. I like the song, but the chorus to me I don't like to listen to too much. Overall it's cool. A love it or hate it song. "Amusement Park" cann be considered the 2007 version of "Candy Shop", a song about loving the ladies.
"Fully Loaded Clip" to me is 50's most dangerous song on the album, I think more so than Man Down. It makes referrences to rap artist with their Hollywood relationships. While these artist are playing lovey dubby, 50 is in his kitchen cookin' coke, shining his 9mm, and loading up preparring for a firefight.
"Peep Show" feat. Eminem is a clubbing track. Don't get it twisted though, it's more suitable for a gentleman's club rather than a dance/night club.
"Fire" 50, Young Buck, and Nicole Schezinger makes it hot with synths, rhymes, and the sexy vocals of a woman. Raps are about women and sexual content, as expected no less. "All of Me" with Mary J. has some nice vocals from the Queen and the next track "Curtis 187" both are two more soon to be New York classics. This is Hip Hop, those who thinks it is dead need to look no further.
"Touch The Sky", not to be confused with Kanye's song of the same name bares no resemblance. A cool song to put closure to a great album. "Put your hands up high" and celebrate, Fiddy is back and is bigger, badder, and grittier than ever. Everyone loves to hate on the top dawg and want to see him fall, but let me tell you he isn't going anywhere anytime soon!
