Free Music Notes for 9 To 5: The Musical (Original Broadway Cast Recording) AlbumFree Music Review: Nice Job, Dolly! Hit: 3 Stars
In her first Broadway outing, Dolly Parton has delivered a perfectly good score based on "9 to 5," the 1980 movie she starred in about three working girls who scheme revenge on their decidedly politically incorrect boss. The sound is basically pop-country, and the recording kicks off catchily with (what else?) the theme song from the movie.
From there, the major standouts are the Act I finale "Shine like the Sun" and the required power ballad showstopper "Get Out and Stay Out," sung with the required power ballad showmanship by Stephanie J. Block. Megan Hilty proves an apt stand-in for Dolly in songs like "Backwoods Barbie," and the lovely ballad "I Just Might." Mark Kudisch is at his sleazy best in "Here For You" and Kathy Fitzgerald scores in "Heart to Hart." As for Tony nominee Allison Janney, she's obviously not the most talented singer of the bunch, but personality goes a long way (as does skillfully placed ensemble singing).
There's a long fantasy sequence I could do without in the first Act, but this is mainly a lively, infectious recording. Unfortunately I do have to dock a star for being yet another screen-to-stage adaptation of a well known movie (sorry, Dolly! Good job, though.)
