Free Music Review: How Can You Go Wrong?

From beginning to end the Band Of Bees exude swagger and cool. Their first three albums, in which Octopus is a part of, is about as good a start to a recording career as I have ever heard. Their music sounds like a summit of the Beatles, Marvin Gaye,Lee Scratch Perry and Brian Wilson(as they pass a spliff around). Their retro sound is more of a fusion of old school soul, reggae, pop and classic rock than mimicking any particular sound, making it pure bliss. NO DOWNERS HERE. Stand outs though are Left Foot Stepdown, Who Care's What The Question Is, Got To Let Go and This Is For The Better Days(although if you sign up on their website you get a free download of this song mixed by Ashley Beedle, which is even better than this one).With the summer coming up, you really can't outdo this band in general to groove to while your window is down, enjoying life. Perfect blend of deep texture and simple pleasure.I recommend ALL THREE ALBUMS; Sunshine Hit Me, Free The Bees and Octopus. Simply awesome band

2007 release from the Isle of Wight's finest, their third album overall. In the U.S., The Bees had to change their name to Band Of Bees to avoid confusion with a U.S. based band with the same name. Following on from 2004's critically acclaimed Free The Bees, Octopus sees the Bees in top form with an eclectic mix of acoustic, Psychedelic and melodic songs described by the band as 'A joyous blend of the first two albums'. And so far, Octopus has received unanimous support from their fans and has critics across Europe buzzing it's praises! 10 tracks including the first , 'Who Cares What the Answer Is' and the stellar Afro-Beat jam, 'Got to Let Go'. EMI. 2007.Unrepentant in their embrace of the hippy dippy and the skanking, a Band of Bees certainly puts a lot of curves in that embrace. The minor-key shuffle of "Got to Let Go" has just enough lo-fi haze to sound as if it's being beamed from outer space--horns playing quick-riff lines against the Fender Rhodes piano and organ vibrations while the guitar clinks along with the languid doubled vocals. It sounds peachy, a multidisciplinary launch from a stoner's loft. And the ensemble's doo-wop and old-school soul fascinations are as strong as their reggae bent, creating a great turn for harmony vocals--especially on "Listening Man" but also on the organ-fueled, blues-tinted slinker, "Who Cares What the Question Is?" A Band of Bees bears a brand of laconic artistry that's wholly theirs, wholly lovable. --Andrew Bartlett
