Free Music Notes for Sing the SorrowFree Music Review: AFI boldly goes in new directions... Hit: 5 Stars
Sing the Sorrow was my first introduction to AFI. Which is probably why I like it so much. I honestly find this album to be breathtaking. Its a true work of art, and a great sign of maturity from the band. The Art of Drowning is a great record, but this is really a step in a new direction for AFI. Have the sold out? Not at all. They just refined and have built off their old sound. While not abandoning the old sound completly, you can still tell that this is AFI, and there a few songs on this record that should please old AFI fans. But most the album is a step in a new direction, and I personally welcome that direction. A band can't keep creating the same album, it will get old. So no, this is not Black Sails, or Art of Drowning. But its a dang good record, and based off the number of copies it sold, alot of people think its dang good as well.
Is Sing the Sorrow a masterpiece? That's probably a toss up. I personally feel that it is, but many would disagree with me. Regardless, this was a very influential album for many people,it brought AFI legions of new fans; and with good reason.
I honestly don't have one single problem with this record, its fantastic from begining to end. I know a number of people who are old AFI fans don't like this album, but your missing out if you feel that way. Much like decemberunderground, its different, but different doesn't mean bad. I will admitt that I'm much more a fan of the new AFI than older AFI, although I do really dig the Art of Drowning.
Onto the songs. The Leaving Song part 2 is fantastic song, and its actually the song that got me interested in AFI in the first place. I love Daveys vocals on this track, they are strong and powerful. Bleed Black is great song as well, maybe not as strong as The Leaving Song, but its great nonetheless, with some great riffs. Silver and Cold may be one of the best tracks on the album. Its a beautiful and haunting song. Davey does a fantastic job on this song, he sounds amazing. Next up is Dancing Through Sunday, and it is much faster and harder than Silver and Cold, more a old school AFI song than anything else on the album so far. Great track and chorus. Girls Not Grey follows up next, and while its certainly is a great track, its not as strong as Leaving Song or Silver and Cold. Up next is probably my favorite track, Death of Seasons. Incredible song. Its by far the hardest song on the album so far, with Davey doing more screaming. I love the feeling that this song gives you, it even has a little electronica portion to it. It has some great hooks to it, and it's some of the strongest riffs and bass lines in the whole album. The Great Disappointment is next, and its another strong addition, with a great chorus. On the UK version of this album, there is 2 extra tracks, and one of them is entitled, Synesthesia. If you havnt heard that song you need to check it out. It has quickly become one of my favorite AFI tracks, its very well done. Its a shame it wasnt included in the US release.
Anyways, give this album a chance, go into with a open mind. This is a powerful, moving and addictive album. Alot of value can be found here if you dig into it a little bit.
Free Music Review: A.F.I. "Sing the Sorrow" Hit: 5 Stars
First off, to listeners of the older versions of AFI such as "Answer that and Stay Fashionable" and "Very Proud of Ya," this album may come as a shock. It sure did when I first put it in, but since then, it has not been out of my cd player. The first thing I could tell was "Sing the Sorrow" was a bit more dark sounding then earlier. It doesn't seem as fast and upbeat as "The Art of Drowning" but I have become addicted to almost every song. Davey's voice has changed over the years, and I think for the better as shown in songs like "This Celluloid Dream" and "Silver and Cold." There are fast songs (Dancing Through Sunday, Paper Airplanes) and slower songs (Silver and Cold, The Great Dissapointment). Not to mention the best intro I've ever heard "Miseria Cantare (The Beginning". "Girls Not Grey" is an amazing first single which was one of the first radio and video singles released. Old fans say AFI "sold out" but I think they have so much talent it was about time they have been realized for their greatness. Here are reviews of the songs, out of 101. Miseria Cantare (The Beginning)- Such an awesome intro and awesome beat, the greatest possible way to start of the album. 9/10 2. The Leaving Sont Pt. II- Their second single, can get repetitive at times, but has great vocals, screaming and singing mixed together. 10/10 3. Bleed Black- For some reason this isn't one of my favorites, but is definately a great song. Starts slow and then progresses, great drums and guitar. 8/10 4. Silver and Cold- Third single, very slow but very good. It changes the mood of the album. Definately one of the best on the cd, Davey's voice is awesome here. 9/10 5. Dancing Through Sunday- One of the fastest songs on here, Starts fast ends fast and is just fun to listen. 9/10 6. Girls Not Grey- A great first single. Definately got listener's attention. Became a bit overplayed but is still great to listen to. 9/10 7. Death of Seasons- All I have to say is wow, this song is so awesome. It is so original and different. Even a techno part mid-way through. One of the best on here. 10/10 8. The Great Dissapointment- A bit slower than others, doesn't really get into the song until about a minute and a half. Great vocals though once you're into it. 8/10 9. Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)- Awesome song, so fast and upbeat. Screams are great and in the right places mixed in, just an awesome song. 9/10 10. This Celluloid Dream- My favorite song on "Sing the Sorrow" It is so addicting wants you listen you cant stop. A nice medium pace and awesome, awesome vocals and lyrics. 10/10 11. The Leaving Song- Another slower paced song, and a nice way to almost end the cd. The vocals just like "Silver and Cold" are very good here. 8/10 12. ...But Home is Nowhere- My second favorite song. The perfect way to end the perfect cd. Starts slow and then just explodes into one of the best songs. 10/10 Well there you have it, one of my favorite albums of 2003. I definately had doubts the first few listens, but give it time and you'll love this.
Free Music Review: Awesome CD Hit: 5 Stars
First of all. AFI sold out. That is it. If you go from an underground band to the mainstream you sold out. With that aside, I have been an AFI fan since Black Sails and have all of their CDs. Every band goes through phases. Their music changes over time as they mature. AFI's music has definately changed and has changed for the better. Miseria Cantare- the beginning- an opener for the CD. I won't compare it to any of their earlier intoductions but I am not really a fan of this song. 6/10 The Leaving Song Pt. 2- The first song that I began to like and I still love it. The guitar is awesome and it is really catchy. 10/10 Bleed Black- My least favorite song on the CD. I think that it has too much of a pop sing-a-long feel. It still has some great lyrics though. "I know I died that night and I'll never be brought back to life." 5/10 Silver and Cold- A really good song with emotional lyrics. Also very catchy. It is one of the slower songs but still captivates throughout. 9/10 Dancing Through Sunday- One of my favorite songs. It reminds me of the older days of AFI. It doesn't sound a lot like their old music but it is as close as it gets and is very welcome. 10/10 Girls Not Grey- I am not really sure what Davey was thinking when he wrote these lyrics. They don't really make sense to me and I don't want to spend the time figure them out. Still a catchy song. 8/10 Death of Seasons- An awesome song with a different feel. It has a short but cool techno part in it that is really different. It has hard screaming versus and a beautifully sung chorus. 9/10 The Great Disappointment- A slow song that barely pushes through but is still very captivating. The beginning takes a long time to get started but is still a pretty good song. 8/10 Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)- My favorite song on the CD! It is awesome. From start to finish it is fast besides a semi-slow bridge. But the bridge is fairly short and kicks into the fast paced mood again. 10/10 This Celluloid Dream- I am expecting this to be their fourth single although I don't want to be held to it. It is a good song with cool guitars and a catchy chorus. 10/10 The Leaving Song- Through my whole first listen I was expecting it to all of the sudden blow up into an amazing finish like "Morningstar". I am glad, however, that it didn't. If it had it would have shown a true attempt to recreate a classic song. Even without the aforementioned finish it seems a lot like "Morningstar" which isn't a bad thing. 9/10 ...But Home Is Nowhere- The Perfect ending to a great CD (besides the secret song). It has a lot of screaming in the chorus which goes with the mood of the song (Davey's high pitch crooning wouldn't fit the "epicness") 10/10 This Time Imperfect- A slow song that is sung beautifully (Davey's best) and has amazing lyrics. It is a very dark song, as is the entire CD, which portrays aloneness, "Seems no one will appear here and make me real" and shows a lack of truth and care in the world " You don't care that it haunts me" and "Just like all I loved I'm make believe". 10/10
Free Music Review: To Disdeify The Masses Hit: 5 Stars
First off, this album is by far one of the best ever created.
But that is an opinion.
But for people to say that it sucks and that it's simplistic musically? I think you should take a closer listen.
One of the previous reviewers said that it's supposed to be punk music. No music is supposed to be anything, it can be whatever the band creating it wants it to be.
After listening to STS literally hundreds of times, and it being one of my favorite albums of all time, I felt I must write a review of it, song by song.
Miseria Cantare is the opening track. It starts off with ambiance, and goes into very a somber dark synth. The drum beat is right out of Terminator 2, sorry, I had to say it. But it still fits into the song perfectly. Then the chant of the song starts, it gave me chills the first time I listened to it.
Leaving Song part II start with an amazing tapping and sliding guitar intro, then it gets heavy... for a short moment there in the beginning, there is a hint of old AFI. When he says "You won't feel anything..." kind of weird, but it just feels like old AFI at that part. This is a good song but there are some I like much more on this album.
Bleed Black. This is one of my favorite off the album... this song flows very nicely, the lyrics are amazing.
Silver and Cold. A mellow one. I really like the clean guitar riffs in this song. I like the tradeoff singing in the breadown...
Dancing Through Sunday. A fast song, a classic AFI chorus "Ohh we dance in misery"... and this song also has a very nice solo.
Girls Not Grey. Great song, the most radio friendly of the bunch. But that does'nt make it a bad song... It's a pretty happy sounding song... then it gets emotional when Davey says "I'll lay me down..."
Death of Seasons. My favorite song off of the album. Davey really rips through some new types of screams here. Alot of people don't like the electronic fill, but I love it. It fits nicely... the chorus of this song is beautiful, and the ending with the cellos and Davey screaming in the background is very emotional.
The Great Disappointment. My least favorite song on the album... still a good song though, it reminds me very much of The Cure for some reason. Kool bass line... good lyrics.
Paper Airplanes (makeshift wings). A fast paced song, it reminds me of fire and ashes. This to me is the weirdest song on STS.
This Celluloid Dream. I love this song, the opening riff is so awesome, and the lyrics give off alot of imagery. Breakdown is interesting, and also seems slightly out of place.
Leaving Song. A mellow song, with just barre chord guitar throughout, very melodic and emotional.
... but home is nowhere. This song to me is very epic, a great closing track.
That's it, my review... I kind of half assed after the first couple songs. But I think this review is still pretty informative. But what would be more informative is to listen to the song samples.
I can't wait for AFIs next release, I can't imagine how they could surpass Sing the Sorrow... but I know they will.
Free Music Review: and you may take my heart away Hit: 5 Stars
so i had never even heard of AFI until a friend of mine turned me onto them a couple years ago. At 1st i thought that they were just medeocure at best, but now i get their music and it makes sence and its amazing. This is true punk/emo/screamo music at its core!
miseria cantare 5/5: starts out beautifuly and the lyrics and flow and music are just amazing! a great intro!! sets the mood for everything
the leaving song pt 2 5/5: one of my favorite songs on the CD. The music and lyrics and vocals are astonishing! i love the chorus: break down and cease all feeling/burn now what once was breathing/reach out and you may take my heart away. Amazing song!
bleed black 4/5: the intro is good and the flow and rythm is nice and the chorus is great. the lyrics are amazing!

dancing thru sunday 3/5: not really a favorite, i dont care too much for the screaming and fastness of this song, but i love the lyrics. they are some of the greatest ive ever heard! some parts of the song are nice
girls not grey 5/5: another gem this CD offers. starts off kind of fast then slows down a bit and makes for a great song! the lyrics are abstract and the music is great! i love this song.
death of seasons 3.5/5: love the opening. the guitar is kind of haunting but i dont care for the screaming that much. the lyrics are amazing! its a fast song and its nice, but i think if the screaming would have been cut down a bit i would have given it a high score...
the great disappointment 5/5: the intro is slow and haunting and pretty. the sound is very different from anything else on the CD. i love how it goes slow and the vocals are soft. i love this song so much! "while i waited i was wasting away" is sung beautifuly, the whole song is really, but that one part is a favorite.
paper airplanes 4.5/5: resembles "the great disappointment a lot, but is much faster. Its very good tho. yet another song that delievers!
this celluloid dream 4.5/5: i love the opening and the different sound this song provides. Its a nice change of pace and flows very well. very beautiful song!
the leaving song 3.5/5: sounds very..beatleish...and i dont like the beatles..its still an alright song. i love the music and the lyrics are very nice. the vocals are good too.
but home is nowhere 4/5: the opening is nice. the lyrics and music is really good this song is good.
alright so theres other lyrics in the back that i dont get or understand cuz theres only 12 songs on my CD but there's like lyrics for 13 or 14 songs..i dont understand that...but reguardless, this CD is AMAZING! some of the best lyrics i have ever heard. I cherish this CD!
