Free Music Notes for Sing the Sorrow

Free Music Review: high energy, high quality, highly addictive
Hit: 5 Stars

Leaving Nitro, and signing with Dreamworks, AFI changes their style somewhat and not for the worst. Thought to have sold out by many of their long-time hard core fans, AFI enters new territory on their musical journey with Sing the Sorrow. AFI has done anything but "sell out." I've been a fan since Black Sails in the Sunset, and this album did not dissapoinment me in the least. It's true their first single, "Girl's Not Grey," is probably their most radio friendly song ever, but it's still AFI and it definetly isn't anything close to pop. These guys have been around a while now, and they're finally getting the respect and recognition they deserve.

This entire cd is simply incredible. Every song is outstanding. The lyrics are great and Davey delivers them beatutifully with high emotion, making you forget everything but the music. I can't recommend this cd highly enough. AFI owns.

It begins with "Miseria Cantare- The Beginning." An opening with Davey proclaiming "you are now one of us." Then "The Leaving Song Pt 2" which is the second single and one of my favorite songs on the cd. "break down and cease all feeling...burn now what once was breathing...reach out, and you may take my heart away." Awesome. Couldn't stop singing this one for months. "Bleed Black" is more upbeat, and Davey screams through much of the song. "Silver and Cold" is one of the slower songs on the album. It's neat. "Dancing Through Sunday" is probably the fastest song of all and Davey yells most of the song. Very awesome. "Girl's not Grey" is the first single, and the song that opened many people's eyes to AFI whom had never heard of the band before. Good song, but not one my favorites personally. "Death of Seasons" seems to be an album favorite for many, with Davey yelling through the verses and beautifully singing the chorus - "I watch the stars as they fall from the sky. I held a fallen star and it wept for me. I feel the fallen stars encircle me now as they cry." - some of my favorite lyrics from the album. "The Great Disappointment" is one of my favorite songs. The line "While I waited I was wasting away" is very catchy, and carries the song. "Paper Airplanes (Makeshift wings)" is simply amazing and is high energy from beginning to end. Very awesome song. "This Celluloid Dream" is another of my favs, beginning with Davey's signature "oh." I really like Jade's guitar on this track, and I found myself singing this one a lot. "The Leaving Song" is soft and slow, but the lyrics are great and this song shows just how great Davey Havok's voice is to listen to. "...But Home is Nowhere" is the last song, and there is a lot of yelling in this one. Also, "This Time Imperfect" is at the end as the hidden track, and it's soft and slow.

Really, after listening to this cd for months, I have to say that this is AFI at their best.

Free Music Review: An untouchable masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

After listening to Black Sails in the Sunset, All Hallows E.P., the Art of Drowning, and some of AFI's other music for so long, I thought that there was no way AFI could ever top what they had done. The songs they had written so far were by far the favorite of any band I had heard, and I couldn't imagine how they could come up with more songs that could possibly match those.

With Sing the Sorrow, AFI has created their most artistic, moving, and possibly best album ever, though I could probably never place Black Sails, Art of Drowning, and Sing the Sorrow higher than one another. This album shows some of the best vocal talent of Davey so far as well as some of the most creative and pleasing new sounds in some songs. The violin section at the end of Death of Seasons with the quiet echo of Davey screaming in the background is amazing. The entire album moves with such fluidity and there are so many highlights. But without a doubt, what really sets this album apart is the entire last track. In ...But Home is Nowhere, Davey screams his heart out with honest passion with touching lyrics. The secret poem afterwards is so chilling and brilliant. It has an aura of mystery to it that makes one long to know where it is all coming from and what it means. The last song, This Time Imperfect, is incredible. When Davey sings his amazing high part it gives me chills through the whole thing; his voice is so powerful.

On a side note, I just have to say something else about the album. I have heard so many people say that the new album "sucks", especially around people who are new to AFI. Whoever is an old AFI fan and says this seriously needs to re-examine themselves, not the band.

It is so obvious to me and so ridiculous that these people are not giving the album a chance because AFI is becoming popular. They think they are too cool to listen to anything that is popular and that because AFI is now more popular, they aren't still the same band. Well, stop being ignorant and take the music at it's true value, which is musically and lyrically. Some people are so caught up in this new AFI stereotype they don't even give the album the chance because it is so different. But they don't realize that every AFI album has been completely different than the last one for the last five albums! I'll admit that I was a little unsure about this new album but after listening to it over and over it's so clear how much work they put into it and how amazing it is, musically and lyrically. The songs grow on you forever as is typical with any AFI album.

This album begs to be listened to over and over. Read the lyrics and see the passion and work that the band has put in, even if you don't agree with their ideas. Give this band a chance, whoever you are, and listen to this CD with an open mind.

I hope everyone who wants to gets to see this band in concert. I saw them on March 11th and they were amazing. Enjoy this album, everyone. It is an untouchable masterpiece.

Free Music Review: Through plastic shines true flesh
Hit: 5 Stars

Seriously, where did this album come from? Some would say that AFI has changed, sold out, gone bubblegum, and so on and so forth. I know this because I was one of those who ridiculed this album on the first few listens. However the album became more and more attached after awhile. I kept giving it another chance. Sing The Sorrow is truly a perfect title for this collection of songs. In the area I currently live in death has been happening more and more rapidly as time comes. This album is one that has just found a way to soak up any tears. Really helps to find truth in reality. Moreorless this album is one to repair any damaged heart. Jade's guitar work is great on this album. Even on simple radio tunes such as Silver & Cold and Girls Not Grey the overall work is unmatched. Unmatched by any other heavily centered artists. Jade shows just how melodic a band can be on the guitar. Davey tracks layers and layers of vocals while to the trained ear comes off unimpressive live but great on c.d. Davey proves to have grown as a singer. Listen to the range and stability of his vouice on these songs. On previous work his vouice was still great however his vouice would slowly fade out and fall a bit off key towards the end of the note. This album really shined for Davey. A very clean, thick, and heavy opening for Davey. Hunter's bass remains great like always. Death Of Seasons has a great opening bass line. Hunter remains to have that great thick yet climbing bass ability he has always had to back up Jade and Davey. Yeah people want to ridicule AFI of selling out and say the album sucks and what not. Some will even go the distance of not listening to this album just because it's on a major label no matter how good it actually is. You have to understand the reality of this album. Great vocal melodys make great songs and to write creative/inventive guitar work and still have great vocal melody over it is very hard and of course this album does it. Sure they are going to have a radio song like Girls Gone Grey on it, they are on a major label. They have to have a song that can appeal to people who have never heard them before they can expand there fan base and get people into their beliefs and their ideas. People want to say they sold out. Well I look at like this, maybe they got sick of playing the same stages over and over and wanted to grow (that is what people do with age, grow!). After all AFI entertained the underground for over 10 years this move was well deserved. Put yourself in their shoes, they are trying to expand there career, be successfull in what they do, and trying to reach more people with their music. Do not write this album off. It's great and can really touch you if you open up to it. Also go see these guys live it's worth every second of being there. The Orange Pavilion show was great, the secret warped tour 2002 show in L.A. was great as well guys! AFI you are great and never stop making music.

Free Music Review: Something New, Something Great
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a long time AFI fan I have watched through their CD's as they progressed and matured in their music. A couple days after their new CD had come out a friend told me that their new album was total crap and that I should stay away, but being the fan I am I had to buy it, and I was blown away.
For those of you who complain about they're changing sound I guess its reasonable but I think you would also be complaining if they kept doing the same stuff over and again. The change to a major label was a good one as it shows in the amazing production and sound quality of the songs.
Davey's voice is an aquired taste and you either like it or you don't, if you don't like it you shouldn't have bought the album as you knew what you were getting into. Any person who doubbts Jade Pudget's ability with a guitar is a moron as it shines on this CD like none other.
My favorite songs on the CD are as follows:

Miseria Cantare - Powerful drum in the background, and Davey's acopella first verse is absolutely amazing. 'Nothing from nowhere Im noone at all, Radiate. Recognize one silent call as we all form one dark flame." Its a great opening to the CD and lets you know what you're getting into.

Silver and Cold - I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it and I haven't stopped loving it after listening to it about 300 times. The chorus is absolutely georgeous with Davey chiming back and forth with his bandmates in graceful harmony.

Girl's Not Grey - Though this is by far the most Poppy song on the album I still love the guitar work and chorus and lyrics. I think if it wasn't played on the radio like it was it would be the sleeper hit of the album.

Death of Seasons - A great song, thought the techno bridge goes a little crazy for a little there its a nice chance from mellow previous songs on the album and is a great pump-up song. The chorus is absolutely amazing with Davey blending perfect with Jade's guitar in the background.

The Great Disappointment - An amazing slow song filled with Davey putting his heart on display for you to look at and awe in its beauty, an absolutely bitter and powerful slow song.

Paper Airplanes - Amazing guiter work by Puget.

This Celluloid Dream - Once again great guitar work and great lyrical back and forth between Davey and bandmates during the chorus. This song just plain works.

All in all its a huge change from past CD's but in this long-time fan's opinion its a great move and I love where this band is heading. If you would like to disagree with my review I'd love to argue with you about this because this CD really has done it for me and I'd love to fight for it with any of you people who see the appearance of Davey and think of this band as 'goth-fags'. My screename is Cums017 , feel free to message with any comments/disagreements.

This CD is amazing and I absolutely loved it, do yourself a favor and buy it and fall in love with it like I have.

Free Music Review: Don't be fooled by the major label... they're still amazing.
Hit: 5 Stars

Maybe I'm biased. Maybe, since I love AFI so much, I liked this album before I even heard it. It's possible. Or maybe I like it just because it's AFI. I don't think either of those are it, though. This album is so much different than anything AFI has ever done before, and I recognize that. But face it--this IS a good album.

1. Miseria Cantare- The Beginning - Continuing in the tradition of Black Sails. I didn't like that intro, and I don't like this one. 5/10.
2. The Leaving Song Pt. II - A great single. Much better than "Girl's Not Grey," this should have been the first single, since this is more what AFI is all about. I loved it when I first heard it, and I still do. 9/10.
3. Bleed Black - A nice song with a great guitar intro. Not much else to say about it. 8/10.
4. Silver and Cold - This song leans more toward an emo style. I usually don't like emo, but this song is so beautiful I can't help it. 9/10.
5. Dancing Through Sunday - Whoa there, buddy. This is more like the AFI of old. Fast and heavy, with a softer and more melodic chorus, this is incredible. 10/10.
6. Girl's Not Grey - Everybody's heard this song. Before I had even heard it, I was hearing that it sucks, but I disagree. It's good, just not something you would expect from AFI. It's poppier, that's for sure. I don't think it should've been the first single. 7/10.
7. Death of Seasons - Much like "Dancing Through Sunday," this is faster, heavier, and with a softer, melodic chorus. It is also much, much better. 10/10.
8. The Great Disappointment - Again, this is more emo than most of the album. And again, I usually don't like emo, but I can't help it. This song is good. 8/10.
9. Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings) - Again more like the AFI of old. This almost sounds like it could have been off of Black Sails or The Art of Drowning, but it's poppier. That's not necessarily bad though, definitely not in this case. Awesome. 10/10.
10. This Celluloid Dream - A good song, not much of a standout apparently, but good. Great chorus. 8/10.
11. The Leaving Song - Quite like "God Called in Sick Today." Very chilling, very haunting, mainly due to Davey Havok's amazing voice. 9/10.
12. ...but home is nowhere - Amazing song. 10/10.

AFI is no worse than they ever were. They are certainly top of their game lyrically, and though they've softened up musically, they're still amazing. A lot of fans aren't taking the time to really listen to this album, and even more aren't accepting it for what it is. Or AFI either, for that matter. AFI didn't sell out--they evolved, just like they always have. And it's not for the worse. This album is their melodic masterpiece. The only thing I really don't like about this album is all the preppy new fans who only like AFI because they're the new trend. I swear to God I'm going to blow up my local Hot Topic. Anyway, buy this.
