Free Music Review: Why are there only five stars?
Hit: 5 Stars

Five is not a high enough number to describe the beauty of this recording. Let me begin by explaining that I have been an AFI fan since I heard "Days of the Phoenix" at a friends house, and have since bought every one of their recordings that I have been able to find. I understand that some may think that they "sold out," but to want for better opportunities so that they may record the music that they want to record is not a bad thing. One must understand that the band is playing exactly what they want to play, and if that does not suit one's tastes, then go find something else!! I'm sure that there are plenty of mediocre bands that will scream their half-witted little hearts out for your listening enjoyment.
Alright, back to the album. I figure that I must go track-by-track to fully explain the epic that is "Sing the Sorrow." The CD opens with a drum intro and a chant worthy of standing with the best of them. It then warps into passionate screaming as only Davey Havok can perform, and guitar that, when heard, much less seen live, seems impossible. This would explain the "Leaving Song part II" and "Bleed Black." "Silver and Cold," the fourth track, is heart-wrenching when the lyrics have been read, and the song is exquisite, one of my personal favorites. Tracks five through nine are all of the same lyrical genious and musical quality that defies explination, and "This Celluloid Dream" is another personal favorite, a song that cannot be explained in words. Listen to it, I beg of you... If you do not, you'll be missing out on a beautiful ecstasty of sound. "The Leaving Song" is not like other songs of love lost, it takes the blame of the singer and turns it into poetry of sound, accompanied by a guitar that fits the singers feeling of loss and disillusionment. "... But Home is Nowhere" sets up for the best track on the album as only AFI can, with poetic screaming. "This Time Imperfect" almost made me cry... It was that perfect.
... And no matter how much Davey Havok's androgynous voice may get on your nerves, who else can make "Chrysanthemums of white, they seemed so beautiful" lyrics to a song? Buy it, and you will love it.

Free Music Review: Let's admire the pattern forming....
Hit: 5 Stars

First off, if anyone does have to diss this CD as I've read, please do so constructively and don't just blindly hurl abuse, thanks.
Second off, anyone who has only just found out about AFI, this album is intense but in my opinion if you really want the epitome of just what AFI is all about then I urge you to buy Black Sails In The Sunset!
Right, as for the album, I don't know where to start! As always, AFI did not let me down. They create a gothic atmosphere throughout this entire album and just as their fans thought we'd never hear a better intro song than Strength Through Wounding; AFI pull out one of the most atmospheric pieces of music I have heard a long long time ("Miseria Cantare- The Beginning"). The guitars on this album move away from anything I have ever heard, it's still good, it's still AFI but Jade pulls out so many different effects and ideas, even breaking into nothing less than an amazing solo in "Dancing Through Sunday". The album is a roller-coaster ride of emotions with the first track being so anthemic almost rolling into "The Leaving Song Part II". With AFI showing they still have it and although their sounds has changed, their ideas and class has not. They still have that unmistakeably busy sound in the choruses of so many songs harmonising vocals between band members.
If you like punk rock you may be disappointed, buy any other AFI album and you won't be. But if you love AFI's vocals and the way you thought they've created atmosphere so far, buy this and it won't leave your CD player. Don't be put off by "Girl's Not Grey", it's an amazing song but I assure you it's like nothing else on the album, as "Days Of The Phoenix" was on "The Art Of Drowning".
This album has everything, from AFI's punk roots showing through in songs such as "Paper Airplanes (makeshift wings)" to the beautiful sound of songs like "God Called In Sick Today" which hold so much emotion through quiet and loud sections and intricate music and amazing lyrics in songs such as "This Time Imperfect" (hidden track) and "The Leaving Song"
Trust me, if you don't buy this you'll be wondering just what you missed out on forever.

Free Music Review: Better Then EVER!
Hit: 5 Stars

I first learned about AFI from a friend and as soon as I heard "Girls not Grey" I was hooked!

1.Miseria Cantare (The Beginning)-4/5-Nice intro to the albulm. Davey`s vocals are great!

2.The Leaving Song Pt.2-5/5-GREAT song! Nice second single. Great rock sound and awesome beat.

3.Bleed Black-5/5-AWESOME lyrics, beat, vocals everything!Great song!

4.Silver and Cold-4.5/5-A little slower then the other songs, but still great! Again awesome vocals and lyrics!

5.Dancing Through Sunday-10/5-This is deff. my favorite song on this album. Daveys sound is outstanding and Jades gutair solo is worth it all!

6.Girls not Grey-5/5-Great first single. The first song that got me listning to them. A little more rock/pop...(if there is such a thing) but still amazing!

7.Death of Seasons-5/5-The most "punk"/rock song on the albulm I think. Great chours and lyrics.

8.The Great Disappointment-4/5-Only a 4/5 because of a miniute long into, but other then that another one of my favorite songs. Daveys vocals really shine and AFI`s lyric style is shown through this song.

9.Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)-5/5-Awesome song! Great beat and inspirational lyrics. One of the best songs!

10. The Celluliod Dream-9.5/10-My second favorite song! Everythings perfect about this song. These lyrics say so much if you think about what they mean. Awesome sound, instrumentals, vocals and all!

11.The Leaving Song-3.5/5-Good song...one of the weaker songs on the albulm, but still good. Nice lyrics, another slower song, but still great.

12. ...But Home Is Nowhere-5/5-GREAT ending song to an awesome CD. Awesome lyrics and vocals!

*Bonus Track*7/5-Great lyrics and sound! As good as all the others!

~Overall~This whole CD I`d give a 9.5/10. I know many of the earlier fans don`t believe this is the "real" AFI. Its not that their sellouts It`s just that their whole sound I think has changed. One of the BEST CD`s I own! Daveys vocals are AMAZING! Jades guitar playing has improved RAPIDLY and is awesome! Hunters bass playing is GREAT with awesome sound! and Adams drum playing is just beoynd amazing! This band has gotten far and they still have a LONG way to go!Go out and buy this now I promise you wont be disappointed!

Free Music Review: WARNING: Not the same as older AFI
Hit: 5 Stars

First off, i got into AFI way before Sing the Sorrow. I love them now, i love them then, i will always love them. For all you old-school AFI fanboys who says that afi "sold out" really need to shut up. it is true that some older punk bands have changed their music in a deeper direction. this cd is much more emotionally complex and well thought out than any of their other works. it is also tru that afi started out as a punk band. they also have evolved as musicians.

this new album is no longer "punk" persay. but it is far from weak and feeble. AFI never sold out, they changed. back in the days of "very proud of ya" and "answer that and stay fasionable" AFI was much more immature in musical style and in lyrics. People change. The guys from AFI have also. there is no doubt that songs like "cereal wars" will live forever, although it's creators have changed. if AFI stayed the exact same way without any variation, they would become very stale (see godsmack).

AFI gave all they could to punk music, they got tired of it, so they moved on. not nesisarrily stopping playing punk, but altering it. instead of playing the same chords over again, they changed. they have become the AFI as of "sing the sorrow" which is much deeper, darker, and harder than before. i have heard alot of people say that AFI has become much more weak and whiney, which is pretty hard for me to beleive, because 1, davey havok screames more on this cd than any other, and 2, because none of the lyrics have anything to cry about, just the truth in some form or another. i think that the lyrics are much more mature and developed than in previous albums. just because this album happens to show up on MTV, doesent mean that AFI changed the way it did because they had to. they could just have become another simple plan/newfound glory dispensed pop punk band. they chose to rise above that. and when i heard about AFI becoming an MTV TRL band and everything, i'm actually happy. i can just IMAGINE how much [...] theyre gunna kick next to good charlotte and the all american rejects... wow

bottom line, its really up to you whether your going to like this cd or not, just try to be tolerant of other styles of rock other than punk rock.

Free Music Review: Forget punk, forget goth
Hit: 5 Stars

I love it when I read reviews that denigrate a band because it's not the style of music they thought it was. Regardless of weather you call AFI punk, or goth or sellouts, I still think they're damn good. Now am I about to run to Hot Topic and spend $100 dollars on a black mesh shirt? Hell no. AFI has not changed so much as people are led to believe. They were original when they were "punk", and they are original now. They're musical stylings have only changed because they themselves have. If I were the same as I was 10 years ago, I'd still be TPing houses and watching GI Joe the movie. OK, so maybe I do still watch GI Joe the movie, but that's not the point.

That said, it's time for my actual review. Sing the Sorrow is the latest in AFIs progression of depression, but damn, that Davey Havock can belt out some rockin tunes when he's mopey. Someone should shoot his dog before he goes into the studio again. Not, seriously of course. Please don't shoot the mans dog. I mean, that would just be ****ed up. Maybe if you just kidnapped his dog until they were done recording... you know, get him in the mood. (I'd like to apologize to Davey, as well as anyone I've offended, but most of all, Id like to apologize to his dog... If he even has one)

Their is not a single weak link on this album. Some songs, however, do stick out. This Celluloid Dream being my favorite for its shear energy. The transitions in the music are great, and instrumentaly, these guys just keep getting better with every album. Unlike many people, I'm glad to see them on a major lable, because with a bigger budget, and better equipment, it gives the guys a chance to explore their creativity with less restrictions. A resomend this buy to anyone, regardless of whether you call yourself punk, or goth, or new age..... well, maybe not the new age types... but most other people will enjoy it. As for those of you who dismissed this because it wasn't "punk" enough for you, music doesn't have to sound like it was made in a basemnt to be good, and if you're afraid your friends will kick you out of their punk club if you buy it, then your really no better than the mindless drones at Hot Topic.
