Free Music Notes for One Cell In the SeaFree Music Review: Lovely Voice Hit: 5 StarsBeautiful voice, interesting lyrics, songs that will wrench your heart...it makes me feel and I love that.
Free Music Review: one of the best releases of 2007 Hit: 5 Starsas an ardent reader of mojo,Q,and uncut magazines,i normally compare my own best of list with theirs, and with the odd exception, most pundits agree on what was hot and what not on the music scene the year gone by.yet, glaringly absent from the best of list for 2007 by all the said magazines, was a fine frenzy.this once again raised the question what makes for an album to be so special that it appeals across various musical tastes and ultimately, has enough quality(and staying power to make it one of the best releases for a specific year?).I do not propose that there is one answer to such a question or that i indeed have the answer, but,of one thing i am convinced, and that is that all three the above quoted authorities on music have it wrong this year.Regardless of one's musical preference a fine frenzy's debut album is one of the finest moments in music.a sincere, serene effort that never let go.one is hard pressed to find amongst all the tracks any lesser ones.it is beyond doubt however that the standout tracks(which comprise most of the album)would fit comfortably on any acclaimed artist's "wish i had done that" list.so,to summarise,if you really want to hear one of the greatest albums of 2007,which will still sound fresh and alluring at the end of 2008 ,buy this album.you will be richly rewarded.
Free Music Review: My top favorite CD of the year. Hit: 5 StarsI don't usually write reviews, and I have no intention of making an essay out of it. I just want to say that this CD came out of nowhere, and it's fabulous and completely underrated. I only happened to hear about A Fine Frenzy because of an iTunes sample. I bought it immediately and have never regretted it, because both her voice and lyrics are gorgeous. I even wrote to author Stephenie Meyer, telling her that this CD was essentially a soundtrack to her Twilight series, and that she should check it out. So it stands to reason that you should too. I want this CD to sell well enough that Alison Sudol will come out with a second album!
Free Music Review: A *VERY* Fine Frenzy Hit: 5 StarsThis album appeared as a recommendation by Amazon when I was reading Sara Bareilles's album reviews. I decided to give it a go, and boy, was I impressed.
The opening track (and my personal favorite) "Come On, Come Out" transmits such an air of happiness, and actual desire to come out [no closet related.]
Album highlights:
Come On, Come Out ****
You Picked Me ****
Whisper ****
Almost Lover ***
Rangers ****
The Minnow & The Trout ****
I recommend this album to anyone who's looking for inspiring lyrics, haunting piano driven melodies, and soft vocals.
Free Music Review: They are the hunters, we are the rabbits Hit: 5 StarsIs it possible for a CD to live up to every bit of the hype it has received? In A Fine Frenzy's case, the answer is a resounding yes. Anything good you've heard about One Cell In The Sea is true. I was extremely skeptical going into buying this, I kept thinking "How can someone, with her first record, win critics and listeners alike over?" I still don't have the answer to that question, but I do know that I'm addicted.
One Cell In The Sea is its own CD, sure you can make comparisons if you want but that'd defeat the purpose. This is one of the most original CDs you're likely to hear for some time with one of the best new voices the genre has seen in a while.
"Aside from the vocals," you may be asking, "what's your favorite thing about this CD?" Easy. The lyrics. At times they seem completely ambiguous yet they always make sense. Even when Alison is covering typical topics she finds a way to keep the lyrics fresh and interesting, a feat not easily acheived by artists nowadays. The Minnow & The Trout, for instance, has Alison singing heartily:
"But we were one cell in the sea in the beginning"
I have no real clue what that means, but I love it. What's more, the entire CD is like that.
Then you have the music. Prodominantly lead by the piano (I'm beginning to learn that the piano is one of the most diverse--and best--instruments you can possibley use), we also see a wealth of strings and drums incorporated as well, thus keeping each song from being bland or boring.
My favorite songs are You Picked Me, Rangers, Ashes And Wine, Last of Days, and Near To You. One Cell In The Sea is one of those CDs you can guarantee yourself you'll never tire of. Each song has its own message, feel, and sound, thus making sure no one song treads ground already paved earlier on in the record. A Fine Frenzy is one of those bands--or artist?--that instill that excitement in you that makes you think maybe there is hope that you can still be both original and known. Highly recommended.
