Free Music Notes for A Hard Day's NightFree Music Review: Pop music doesn't get better than this Hit: 5 StarsBoy, things really moved quickly in 1964! On December 26th, 1963 I Wanna Hold Your Hand was released in the US. On February 9th Ed Sullivan introduced the Fab Four to American audiences. Almost 41% of the US population watched. By April 4th The Beatles occupied the top five spots on the Billboard "Hot 100". Their third LP, A Hard Day's Night was released on July 10th. The movie, filmed during 16 weeks in the spring, debuted in July in the UK and in August in North America. Before the year was out Beatles For Sale (In North America this was re-named, we lost a few songs, gained a few - it was released as Beatles '65) had hit the shelves. In the midst of all this the band toured the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the US (twice). I saw them on September 7th at Maple Leaf gardens in Toronto - last row, greys, $4.00! That the Beatles were able to write and record such a uniformly excellent LP as AHDN is a real testament to their immense creative talents.
As is so often the case the band starts off the record with a memorable sound. - George's instantly recognizable Rickenbacker. What follows are thirteen gems. There isn't a weak song amongst them and there are several masterpieces - the title track, If I Fell, And I Love Her and Can't Buy Me Love. I think that the songs that complete the album, that missed the cut for the movie, are just as strong as those that were included. The first Beatles LP had strong covers and some nice originals. The second had terrific originals. With this release Lennon and McCartney really hit their stride. I've listened to each of these songs dozens of times and I still get goose bumps. After a slight stumble with their next (Beatles For sale) the band never broke stride again.
Free Music Review: "Bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky..." Hit: 5 StarsA Hard Day's Night by The Beatles is their best earlier recordings. Standout tracks include: And I Love Her, Things We Said Today, I'll Be Back, I'm Happy Just to Dance With You, I'll Cry Instead, and If I Fell. John Lennon sings most of the songs on this album and he carries these impressive songs well. Paul has a chance to shine with probably the most overplayed Beatles song of all-time, Can't Buy Me Love. All the songs are Lennon/McCartney originals and George can be heard singing track number 4 which he does a wonderful job handling the lead vocals. I highly recommend checking this classic soundtrack out and the movie too. "When I'm home, everything seems to right..."
Free Music Review: John's finest hour and a darker set of original songs Hit: 5 StarsJohns songs here are getting darker and the band wrote an unprecedented 14 songs for this strong third album. Paul also shows his darker side on Things we said today.
Free Music Review: A Hard Day's What? Hit: 5 StarsGoing on 43 years, this album still sends a jangly chill up and down my spine. From the rip-roaring opening chord of "A Hard Day's Night" to the plaintive "I'll Be Back," this is the first truly awesome Beatles' recording. In one year, 1964, the group moved from a simple "Love Me Do" to an exuberant "Can't Buy Me Love." Everything to love about the Beatles is here. Not the sophisticated pop to come later, but still heady stuff indeed. At their heart, the Beatles were a great rock and roll band, and this record stands as testimony. Yes, they saved the best for the movie. The first seven songs almost dance off the disc. This is why everyone was screaming. George's jangly 12-string, John's pop harmonica, Paul's bouncing bass, Ringo's "beat," and some pretty amazing vocals, this is what it was all about. And the last six song include some gems. "I'll Cry Instead," "Things We Said Today," and "I'll Be Back" all point to the future, music that was going to jump outside the box. All this, and "You Can't Do That." Yeah, yeah, yeah! They could.
Free Music Review: Still great after all these years... Hit: 5 StarsThis is John Lennon at his best as a Beatle. George Harrison is excellent with "I should have known better", one of my favorite Beatle tunes of all time. It is fun, upbeat and romantic. I never get tired of listening to it.
