Free Music Notes for A Hard Day's NightFree Music Review: Try to stop singing along with it... Hit: 5 StarsRank the Beatles albums as you like but in the "Stick it on and try to stop singing along with it" stakes "A Hard Day's Night" is pretty difficult to beat. Don't believe me... well if you were there at the time get your old album or CD out, and, if you weren't, get hold of a copy and give it a whirl. Result?... by track 2 ("I Should Have Known Better") you'll be off and then there's no way back from being sucked into it all.
In amongst the huge praise heaped on "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Sgt Pepper" & "Abbey Road" it's easy to forget that the reason the Beatles became so famous was because they could write infectious and unforgettable pop songs. That's what "A Hard Day's Night" is full of and that's why it catapulted them to international stardom. It could so easily have been the difficult "we're now so successful we've made a film" third album but instead it was a stunning confirmation that they were quite exceptional tunesmiths. It knocked all competition out of the ring and left the world asking "what'll they do next?" which, of course, is history.
And, after all the years and all that's been said, it's still irresistible. A 20th century classic and, above all, a wonderful slice of "good time" music. Stick it on and try to stop singing along with it...
Free Music Review: Amazing Hit: 5 StarsFor all the people that feel that this album is not the "real" soundtrack to the film, let's get something straight...The Beatles did not intend this album to be just a soundtrack, this was supposed to be their full third album, even though they started it because of the film. This is not a soundtrack album at all, but a full Beatles album in its own right, and just so happens to be one of the 3 or 4 best albums they ever made. Every song is memorable...I'd even go so far as to say that John's songwriting was never as consistent as it was here. But when people give a bad review becuase the album available is not the one they grew up with, I get mad because not only is this a better value, you don't have to listen to the crappy muzak that United Artists forced onto the original soundtrack album. Embrace this version, being closed minded is keeping you from enjoying the peak of their early years. Song for song, a masterpiece
Free Music Review: What happened to the actual soundtrack? Hit: 3 StarsI love this album with the wonderful songs the Beatles sang from their first groundbreaking film. But I think the recording doesn't do justice to the entire film. It leaves out all the instrumental music that was integral to the feeling of the film. Everytime I listen to this I keep expecting some small interlude of the "in between" sounds and feel let down that they aren't there anymore.
And I have to agree to those who think the remastered sound isn't at it's best. I just keep listening because it's the best I can do. Wish I still had my original RLP!
Free Music Review: A Real Treasure! Hit: 5 StarsThis album is just superb. 13 super songs. It was recorded in 1964 and back then the Beatles were at the top , having already topped the charts around the world with their first couple of albums and a string of singles. Everyone was wondering what was next and if they could keep up the success and the musical greatness, or if they would quickly come crashing down.
They provided the answer with this album and also, their debut movie, also called "A Hard Days Night", both of which were global successes.
The title cut, "Hard Days Night", was written and sung by Paul McCarntey & John Lennon, but was inspired by Ringo, who used the phrase to decribe how long the band had been wrking in the studio at the end of a recording session. Released as a single it became yet another #1 hit for the band. The singles b-side, "Things we said today" (also included on the album) is even better than the hit side that could have been a chart-topper in its own right.
"Can't Buy Me Love", another #1 hit, is also here, as are popular album cuts such as the Lennon lead "I Should Have Known Better", McCartney's "And I Love Her" and another of my favorites, "You Can't Do That".
"I'll Be Back", a somber toned love song, is a great ending to the album.
The Beatles first three albums ("Please Please Me", "With The Beatles" & "A Hard Days Night") are all great, most bands wouldn't be able to pull of as many good songs in a 10-30 year career, but, as for the beatles, as great as these songs were, there were still even better to come.
I highly recommend this album.
Free Music Review: This is NOT the 1964 Film I saw Hit: 1 StarsThis is another mutilation and misalignment of the original Beatles work that some of us lived through but are unable to find in its original USA formulation. This CD is only remotely connected to the original 1964 Film soundtrack. The original features 12 tracks, only 8 of which are on this CD. In addition, the order is completely scrambled and the other five tracks on this CD have no relation to the 1964 film. And the cover art is not the original red-background four mop-heads motif which trademarks the original film and album.
Somewhere the Beatles material has become less than authentic. It is almost impossible to get much of the original material as released in the USA market. You get the British version, or a mixture of the two, or even worse - "bonus" tracks which destroy the artistic theme or unity of the original release. This is not what the original fans are looking for! And what about "HELP!", you can't even get it on DVD. Doesn't that sound absurd?
[1) this was originally billed by Amazon as the Original Soundtrack from AHDN...they have since stopped listing it as such.
2) HELP ! is now available as a new DVD realease. it was not for a long time, unless you wanted to pay big bucks]
