Free Music Review: Let's Dance to the Beatles' Beat!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a truly outstanding collection of early Beatle compositions and my favorite Beatle movie. The music is pure and of extraordinary caliber; Lennon & McCartney's works remain nonpareil. This, as with the Beatles' earlier albums, one can find a vast array of musical styles and high caliber lyrics. The Gestalt Beatles, or the sum being greater than the whole of its parts is evident in this recording as well - these four men were truly what made the group work and have the cultural influence they will continue to have.

The title song on this album was also the title of the Beatles' first movie which was released in 1964. A funny, upbeat, "upBeatle" movie, it is loosely based on the Beatles' lives during their meteoric rise to fame.

The Beatles not only influenced fashion by their clothing choice and trademark coiffure; they left an indelible stamp on music by sticking with their own originality and individuality. The movie reflects the individuality of each Beatle and how he uses that in their music.

"A Hard Day's Night" is truly the ideal pop/rock & roll collection. John Lennon wrote the majority of the songs for the movie, including the stellar "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You," which George sang lead on. In fact, George in effect made that his song. It is one of the best songs on this collection. John's hard driving rhythms, guitar playing and singing are evident throughout this collection; just listen to the title song. "If I Fell" was a true Lennon ballad; this beautifully sad, bittersweet song works quite well with the balladeering McCartney and McCartney contributions such as "And I Love Her."

This collection, like the title film is an exercise in fast paced motion. "I Should Have Known Better," a Lennon classic replete with harmonica and excellent vocals and the more upbeat "Tell Me Why," and, "Any Time At All" will make you want to dance. (Not all of the songs on this collection were included in the film).

Paul McCartney really rocks on this collection. The 1964 classic, "Can't Buy Me Love" remains one of my all time favorites and was already a hit before this collection was even released. George Harrison and his phenomenal guitar playing really sets the songs on fire; he really tears it up on "Can't Buy Me Love."

My own personal favorite, "Things We Said Today" is truly one of the best songs from a lyrical standpoint. It appears to examine a relationship critically, yet lovingly and in a somewhat bittersweet tone. John Lennon gave Paul McCartney his stamp of approval in re this song. "Things We Said Today" is pure McCartney; it is a love ballad at its best.

Although this collection boasts of no Harrison compositions, George sets a musical wildfire with his strong vocals on "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You." It is doubtful that anybody could have sung that song nearly as well or have given it as much heart as George did. That was my favorite song in the movie; George tore it up with that one and his phenomenal guitar playing for the title song, "A Hard Day's Night." From the second you hear that opening chord, you feel good all over. I just LOVE it!

Ringo kept the beat perfectly; his bongo playing in "And I Love Her" was wonderful. This is truly a feel good collection.

You will be at no loss of excellent songs; this is a treasure trove of hits. You will find yourself dancing as you listen to this stellar collection. Try Some, Buy Some "A Hard Day's Night." You will be so glad you did and you'll be happy just to dance!

Free Music Review: The first of the good ones.
Hit: 4 Stars

AHDN, was the first album by the Beatles to contain songs exclusively by Lennon and McCartney. And some cracking songs were featured on it too. The first noticeable thing after hearing the album was that it appeared that the Beatles were beginning to change their style and take on a more subtle approach. Whereas the first 2 albums had the typical boyish Merseybeat sound, AHDN seemed to aim for more thoughtful songs and ballads in particular. Such tracks as "If I fell", "And I love her", "Things we said today" and "I'll be back", were typical examples of this being high quality ballads relying largely on an acoustic and melodic approach. But there were 2 classic Lennon rockers as well. The title track, AHDN, with its unforgettable opening crash chord, (completely novel at the time) and "Any time at all", both showed how well Lennon was progressing as a songwriter. Another great & bluesey effort from him was "You can't do that", with menacing lyrics and delivery. I'll cry instead" is a pleasant up-tempo C&W style song from Lennon, which swings along nicely. McCartney wrote the first single released from the AHDN, "Can't buy me love", also bluesy in style, and has long been adopted as a standard by the jazz fraternity in many different interpretations.

There were 3 tracks which I never cared for, and still had the old Merseybeat stamp on them: "Tell me why", which Lennon, years later admitted was one of his worst songs. "When I get home" is my least favourite. They could have left this one off the album. "I'm happy just to dance with you" is much better and has an interesting rhythm guitar chugging along in the background, but still sounds old-fashioned, compared to the more sophisticated direction in which the Beatles were going with some of these tracks. But despite these minor flaws, AHDN is still a very good album overall. George Harrison's newly discovered 'love', the 12 string electric guitar features prominently on the album and adds further interest.

Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Dismiss the "Early Beatles" at your peril
Hit: 5 Stars

Anyone who thinks the early Beatles were somehow immature or "lesser" compared to their later work simply needs to pick up this jaw-dropping album. Without a doubt it's one of their three greatest (The other two being Revolver and The Beatles, in my opinion), and I would even be open to arguments placing it at the top, though I personally wouldn't myself.

Realize: a little over a YEAR into their major-label career, in the wake of two #1 LPs and four consecutive #1 singles with current expectations to match, in the midst of a publicity crush the likes of which won't be seen again until Jesus returns, during a mindblowingly grueling touring schedule, AND while filming a motion picture, The Beatles ALSO found the time to put out a fully perfect album of 13 self-penned songs. The ONLY time Lennon and McCartney wrote all the songs for an album, in fact. The main triumph is Lennon's - he wrote 10 out of 13, including the title track and impressively mature gems like "If I Fell" and "I'll Be Back" - but when McCartney's three contributions are called "Can't Buy Me Love," "And I Love Her," and "Things We Said Today" the balance is redressed. A Hard Day's Night is the final word on early Sixties pop and, when you factor in the diamond-crushing pressure they were under at the time, also one of the most bravura performances in rock history.

Free Music Review: Without a doubt the best of the first 4.
Hit: 5 Stars

It wasn't anything wrong with PLEASE PLEASE ME,WITH or FOR SALE but of the first four (UK releases),this one was the best. Each of those albums had a few great songs but a few not so great songs to weigh them down. This album is Beatlemania at it's peak. Not a single throwaway on the whole album.
From the first track, the title song to the last track,"I'll Be Back" this album is pure adrenaline.Even though they would go on to release several monumental albums in the next few years, none would be as heart pounding as this one.

Free Music Review: And I Love It
Hit: 5 Stars

Guys, it's the Beatles.

Really.

There's nothing that needs to be explained.

It's just brilliant.
