Free Music Notes for A Mighty Wind: The AlbumFree Music Review: Maybe it's a parody, but it's also great music Hit: 5 Stars
I have a confession to make. I began watching the film "A Mighty Wind" anticipating the kind of witty send-up that Guest and friends did so well in "This is Spinal Tap". And the film certainly seemed to have all of the right elements to leave you laughing. But something unexpected happened. A wacky, psycho, washed up music duo, Mickey and Mitch, stole my usually cynical and jaded heart. Amidst the earnestness of the New Main Street Singers and the noddin' and winkin' of the Folksmen, this dysfunctional pair of lost souls sang beautiful, moving love songs without a hint of satire. At first I was a bit disturbed that I was actually LIKING this music. I don't mean liking it because it's part of a funny, satirical collection of songs that parody the folk music movement. No, I mean liking it because it's really good music. But now I admit it. Mickey and Mitch are good. This CD is worth the price just to hear them.
Free Music Review: Blew me away Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike some of the other reviewers of this CD, I know nothing about folk music. I don't think I could name three folk musicians if you asked me. But after seeing this hilarious movie (better than Best in Show, equal to Guffman) and tapping my feet all the way through, I immediately bought the CD and it hasn't left my stereo. This is high praise coming from someone whose CD collection consists mainly of alt rock. The songs are subtly funny, with the sometimes awkward and purposely cheesy lyrics, but not outright parody like "Weird" Al. The result is an album that has some beautiful, moving songs (the trio of Mitch and Mickey tunes), some great sing-a-longs and incredible harmony. Even more amazing when you consider that most of the singing, playing and songwriting was done by the actors. I'd pay to see a show like the PBN program at the end of the film.
Free Music Review: A Mighty Wonderful Wind! Hit: 5 Stars
You know, I actually consider myself more of a rock fan, but once I saw this movie, I knew I had to have this CD. Like a lot of the other reviewers mention here, this album is very comedy oriented, and the musicianship is FANTASTIC! From the opening tune to the final "Mighty Wind," I was hooked on this wild and wonderful ride! All of the performers are great, though I tend to favor the "Mitch and Mickey" songs. You can just see the changes that happened in their "relationship" as the years rolled by for this fictional couple (the "Ballad of Bobby and June" had me in tears). Hats off to the writers and musicians, which include Guest, Levy, Shearer, O'Hara, composer C.J. Vanston, and McKean and his wife, Annette O'Toole. They made me want to bask in the delightfully moving breezes of this "Mighty Wind."
Free Music Review: Best Musical Parody Probably Ever Hit: 5 Stars
If you like folk music and you have a sense of humour this is a 'must buy' album. The three acts (Folksmen, Mitch & Mickey, the New Main Street Singers) are beautifully realized here. You will remember how much you loved them even as you realize that you've nevere heard them before. The satire is dead on and still gentle. Each group has its own sub genre of folk to skewer. The Folksmen go after the Kingston Trio, The Limelighters and the Brothers Four. The New Main Street Singers target the New Christie Minstrels, the Seekers, the New Seekers and We Five. Mitch & Mickey are iconic of Sonny & Cher, Don & Donna and all the other overly romantic groups of the era. All of the songs reflect that. And the songs are amazingly catchy. This is a CD that bears repeated listenin'.
Free Music Review: Great album Hit: 5 Stars
After renting the movie we liked it enough to get the DVD and the soundtrack album. If you grew up listening to the likes of the Kingston Trio, New Christy Minstrels, Rooftop Singers, and any of the other folk groups of the late 50s to mid sixties you'll appreciate this homage to their songs and styles. The songs on this CD, although somewhat tongue-in-cheek, are every bit as good as the popular folk songs of that era, which is what makes this album so listenable. The whole family loves it; even our teenagers ask us to listen to it on road trips.
Note: this CD includes a version of the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" as performed by "The Folksmen", and it is NOT edited as was the Stones' recent performance of the song at the Super Bowl. "Kumbaya", indeed.
