Free Music Notes for Mer De NomsFree Music Review: Music in its purest form and as it should be! Hit: 5 Stars
You don't know how hard it is to contain this excitement I'm feeling right now. I have been a big fan of anything rock but this will change your perspective of music forever. I mean it. Most APC fans have been fans of Tool first. Well, with me it's kinda different. I heard of Tool before APC but never really paid much attention to Tool's music. But thanks to APC I have also become a Tool fan. But enough of Tool. Maynard has one of the most awesome voices in the history of music and he definitely shows it here with APC more than with Tool (don't get me wrong, I love his voice while he's with Tool too). But don't let Maynard steal all the credit. The four other members are very talented as well. That's an understatement. They're all AWESOME! Plus Paz is kinda cute (especially in high-heels and when she ties up her hair in the ?Judith? video) :) Anyway, let me go through each song on Mer De Noms and rave on about them some more.01. The Hollow - 5/5 Musically: I love how the timing is in 3/4 but it's confusing because at the same time it tricks you in thinking it's still in 4/4 in the way it sounds. The chorus is refreshing and the bridge gives me goosebumps! Lyrics: The lyrics, written by Maynard of course, are as always thought provoking. The lyrics to every one of these songs are so multi-dimensional and can mean different things to different people. To me, it means that people shouldn't try to fill the hollow of their lives with lust. And of course, it's sung beautifully like in every song on this amazing CD. 02. Magdalena - 5/5 Musically: This song stars off with a slow, dragging feeling like you're in a daze and the verses are moaned by Maynard in such a way, it feels almost haunting. It then progresses to an almost vicious sounding love proclamation. What one of the cool things about APC is that they have instrumental solos in almost every song. The one in this one is just as hypnotizing and trancelike as the rest. Lyrics: What this song means TO ME (this is how I interpret it, others may get something different out of it) is to be careful in love. This song seems like it?s from the perspective of a man deeply in love with a woman but so much it's almost maniacal. Almost blind. He's so overwhelmed by her he would do anything she asked. 03. Rose - 4/5 Musically: Very mystic and enchanting. The way it evolves is cool. From mystic to aggressive and back again. I also love the violin solo at the end, which I assume is played by Paz. The reason I give it only 4 out of 5 is because it?s very different from the other songs and takes getting used to. It's still a great song; it just doesn't get listened to as many times as the others do. Lyrics: This one is hard to interpret. I guess to me, it would mean to control your anger and don't be careless. 04. Judith - 5/5 Musically: This one is pretty harder than the rest and it gets stuck in your head. No wonder it was the first single. This song is a mixture of singing and screaming from Maynard blended together perfectly. The video was cool too. Just love Paz's high-heels and the way she ties up her hair. This song will be one that will never get old. Lyrics: I am a Christian and I believe that Jesus is the savior and is the only way to Heaven. I urge you who feel the way that the lyrics suggest about Christianity to stop and find out more about it. The Lord is the most important thing. Period. The lyrics in this song are evilish and is an attack on Christianity. I have heard APC fans discussing this and one of them said that Maynard might be using this song as a metaphor to describe a relationship with a friend named Judith. That's a possibility but I don't think anyone knows for sure except for Maynard and A Perfect Circle. I know Maynard said that there is a real person that goes by the name of Judith that this song is about. If Maynard feels this way about Christianity or if any listeners to this song do, I pray that God may work in your life and reach out to you. So keep all this in mind while listening to this great sounding song.
Mer De Noms Poster A Perfect Circle Photos More from A Perfect Circle Emotive | Thirteenth Step | aMOTION | "A Perfect Circle is not a side project," proclaim the members of Perfect Circle. It's a caution worth heeding, since the most identifiable name in the band is that of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool. On the other hand, one wouldn't be much inclined to file this one under "side project" anyway. The musicians involved go to great lengths to create something distinctive, and if the uniformity of sound can be attributed to the fact that guitarist Billy Howerdel (whose previous songwriting credits include Tool, the Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie) is responsible for the lion's share of the music, well, the others aren't exactly marching in lockstep. Keenan's vocals here are quite different from anything heard from him before. Subtle, thoughtful, sober, they're a far cry from Keenan's work with Tool, which is what makes this album more than a side-project curiosity. Mer de Noms has a life all its own. --Genevieve Williams
