Free Music Review: Very moody and melodic goth metal.....I loved it
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is excellent from The Hollow all the way to the end. The Hollow is definitely my favorite song on the album with its sweeping guitar matching the great drum beats. I love Maynard's voice the best on this track. His screaming cries are so powerful and make the lyrics that much more superlative. Songs that definitely stick out are Hollow, Magdalena, The Rose, Judith, 3 Libras and Orestes. I did notice the first half of the album seems to be a little bit more meaningful to me than the second half. Keenan's (Maynard) vocals really shine on this album. I think his voice can be appreciated more on music like this. Orchestrated instruments seem to harmonize with his soothing voice much better than I would have thought. The guitar work is phenomanally outstanding, too. The drumwork and percussions are very aggressive, yet dont seem to overshadow the other instruments. I like the occasional use of violins or violas on this album, too. Lyrically this album really shines. The lyrics are deep, dark, moody and very powerful. If you appreciate a song for having great lyrics you will love A Perfect Circle. What can I say bad about this album you ask?? Not much. There are a few songs that dont really stick out (all towards the end). And I do wish a few tracks could have lasted much longer. One more comment I have to say about this album---I wish they would release it instrumentally. The musical prowess is too good and would be just as enjoyable without the vocals. This album was probably my favorite from 2000. I would also recommend buying the remixe singles from this album as well--they are just as good. I can not wait for this group's sophomore effort!!!!

Free Music Review: Brilliant and beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

After trying to sit through my friend's copy of the Earshot CD, I had to go and pop this in to recover. As anybody out there knows, this is not Tool, and it doesn't sound much like Tool at all (but then again, what exactly does Tool sound like? All their albums are different.), but that certainly doesn't mean it isn't an amazing album, because it is.

The music here is pretty soft and tranquil, and yet heavy and intense at the same time. How is that possible? Don't ask me, but believe me, A Perfect Circle have accomplished just that. Another cool thing about this album, is that it's got a sound that's completely independent from Tool, and yet Maynard still sounds at home, as if this were Tool, even though it clearly isn't. Is this guy talented or what? This has, dare I say it, his best vocal performance to date. His vocals are much softer and smoother, with an almost R&B-like vibrato, and that's not a bad thing at all. Plus, the lyrics are great as well. They all seem to deal with biblical figures in some way. My faves would have to be "The Hollow", "Orestes", and "Thinking of You", but it's really not fair to pick favorites, because the whole thing is of a high quality.

Oh, and I'd feel ashamed if I didn't mention Josh Freese. He's no Danny Carey (who is?), but he's an awesome drummer, who's clearly capable of playing just about any kind of music. He's a true renaissance man, and he really shines here.

I highly recommend this to fans of intelligent music with a melody. I would put it just below Tool in terms of quality, but how many bands are that good? Answer: Not many.

Free Music Review: beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

this CD...is incredible. Being a fan of Tool I looked forward to it. the result is me enjoying it more than Tool. Maynard and Howerdel are brilliant together and I can't wait till the follow up is released next year.

the Hollow 10/10 - one of hte standout tracks. Its a very good song if not a bit too short.
Magdalena 10/10 - this song, hurts too much to think about (none of your business) but it is still a good song.
Rose 10/10 - another great song. This one has a nice flow to it and it calms you.
Judith 11/10 - the first hit, and definitely one of their best tracks. the hardest track to. don't be misled, Judith is heavy, but there is nothing else like it on the album. don't be afraid.
Orestes - 10/10 another great one. longest song I believe. just beautifully written.
3 Libras 12/10 - I love this song. this is my song. I relate to Maynard here. Its a sad song.
Sleeping Beauty 10/10 - all of them are great. more upbeat then the previous tracks (after Judith)
Thomas 9/10 this is the lacker track. not much to this.
Renholder 10/10 even though this is just an instrumental mainly, I enjoy it.
Thinking of You 10/10 while the chrous might not appeal to all, I love this song. its a very good song.
Brena - 10/10 damn good.
Over - n/a there really isn't anything here. its just an ender.

I recommend this to anyone who wants beautiful music. don't overlook thsi album. I can't imagine anyone thinking this album is [bad]. its a beautiful beautiful album.

I will cherish this record as long as i live.

Free Music Review: WOW! Music at its Best..
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this cd due to the Tool connection. Im a huge Tool fan and I wanted to know what good ole Maynard had been working on. It was a pleasant suprise to find that he had been working with another band which could possibly have to potential to overcome Tool. I had also went out and bought "Giving Birth to a Stone," by Peach (Justin from Tool) but yet I found that it wasn't near as great as I had anticipated. I needed something that could settle my music needs until the next Deftone or Tool album.

All of the songs on here are great but the ones that have caught my attention the most are (in order of ranking):

1. 3 Libras-By far the most soul touching performance by "A Perfect Circle out there. The violens by Paz Lenchantin are as hauntingly pleasant as ever. Also a very sad message.

2. Orestes-This one goes right up there with "3 Libras". Amazing.

3. Rose-A more heavier song than "3 Libras" and "Orestes" but still keeps me coming back to it.

4. The Hollow-This song is alot faster than some of "A Perfect Circle" performances. Great musical performance.

In my opinion the only album that can touch this is maybe some of Tool's music and the debut from "The Deftones-Adrenaline". If A Perfect Circle keeps this same pace as in "Mer De Noms" up I know for sure that they will be around for a very long time to come. I am only 14 but I can tell what good music is and this is music at its best.

Free Music Review: permanently filled this hollow
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been exactly six weeks since I first listened to "Mer de Noms" and I love it even more than I did then. My first review, written the day it was released, did little justice to this amazing CD (even though I gave it 5 stars) because I didn't give the music time to really sink in, and the few songs that I didn't like have now grown on me. I still believe that some of the songs are too short, mainly because I want them to go on forever! I often find myself singing or humming them all day, especially "The Hollow" and "3 Libras," and last night I had a dream in which I was listening to "Magdalena"! These songs, as well as the rest of this truly awesome album, will touch your soul if you possess one.

Those of you who hate this CD because it sounds "nothing like Tool" should be ashamed to call yourselves Tool fans. Maynard is pouring his heart out to you like he's never done before; if you can't appreciate that, stop listening to him altogether. Ironically, it was because of his work with A Perfect Circle that I started to get into Tool a lot more. If he wanted "Mer de Noms" to sound like a Tool album, he would have never joined A Perfect Circle because he could have simply worked with the other members of Tool! He wanted to do something different - this incredible human(?) being has contributed to bands as diverse as Rage Against the Machine, The Deftones, and Tori Amos. Reverend Maynard, I say keep doing what you love, because I love what you're doing!
