Free Music Notes for A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981)Free Music Review: Please have this CD! Hit: 5 Stars
Often we listen with different approaches - the sound engineer listens to how it has been recorded; pianist will listen to how it has been played (if all the right notes were there :-) ), musician will listen too, may be also paying attention to singing as well. And as a musician, I used to pay attention to now little details like that, as later I realized - this is about the music primarily, and he was closer to God (as J.S.Bach intended) as we try to. Yes, he was emotionally unstable, but it doesn't matter. What matters is what you want to get out of it - stop judging his playing, or singing - listen to what BACH wanted to tell you!!!
Free Music Review: By all means worth it Hit: 5 Stars
As most people shopping for this CD, I already own both versions of Goldberg Variations. The new release is definitely worth the money: the sound quality has improved considerably, and Gould's interview was a great bonus (and I didn't think much of the studio outtakes). I really don't care if it was scripted, I don't think Gould was ever a great fan of live impromptus. I learned something new from that third CD, with any luck so will you. I cannot think of a better freebie to attach to this CD set than Gould's own thoughts on music and the two recordings in particular.Definite 5 stars: buy it today.
Free Music Review: A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981) Hit: 5 Stars
A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981) is an amazing recording with the immortal pianist Glenn Gould. Here we get 3 disks. One of the recording from 1955, another from 1981 and an extra disc. To listen to this genius is both astounding and at the same time a humbling experience. Gould was such a tallented pianist that all other pianist that play Bach after him are compared to him and what Yves Nat is for Beethoven, Gould is for Bach. The booklet is quite impressive and we have liner-notes written by the master himself. Highly recommended indeed. 5/5.
Free Music Review: Unmissable Gould Hit: 5 Stars
Impredibile. Arthur Cravan
Free Music Review: Gould on Goldberg - Great! Hit: 5 Stars
This complete set of Goldberg Variations performed by the incomparable Glenn Gould has both his 1955 version and then his 1981 rendition. Close listening shows you how Mr. Gould changed his stylistic interpretation in those 26 years. It's not just the notes that are written in the score, as Mr. Gould so characteristically shows us -- it is how those notes appeal to the performer at a given time. Even if you have another recording of the Goldberg variations, get this one, and see for yourself why you don't need any others.
