Free Music Notes for A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981)

Free Music Review: stunning
Hit: 5 Stars

I still haven't listened to Tim Page's interview with Gould, which is the 3rd CD in this set, because I'm still listening to the first CD, the 1955 version of Goldberg, which is just mind boggling. No wonder it amazed everyone who heard it then--it still has that capacity. It's clean, it's thoughtful, it has a personal point of view, and it's compelling. This is a performance that makes you LISTEN, it's not meant to be background music.

Free Music Review: Satisfy your comparative impulse
Hit: 5 Stars

This set affords the fascinating experience of comparing two extremely diverse performances of the Goldberg Variations and of observing the evolution and maturation of Gould's understanding. I think the 1981 interpretation is the clear winner, but both are riveting. Still, I would gladly trade in this final product of his short career if he would have just completed his recording of the Art of Fugue on organ.

Free Music Review: HANDS DOWN, THE BEST THERE IS!
Hit: 5 Stars

Having listened to the 'Goldbergs' over many thousands of times through the years with various artists, I still keep coming back to Glenn Gould's recordings as the very best that has ever been produced and the truest to what I believe Bach had intended. I never get tired of hearing Glenn play...ever! This CD is a treasure and I highly recommend it...if you couldn't already tell.

Free Music Review: Tureck, Perahia, and Gould
Hit: 5 Stars

I would recommend three versions for Goldberg Variations. Tureck with the ultimate delicate elegance, Perahia for a smooth and pleasant work, and Gould's 1955 "sexy" originality and 1981 retrospective (for these 25 years) piece. I always enjoy the moment when the last couple seconds of aria da capo in the 1981 CD arrives, as such a touching experience.

Free Music Review: Great performances! Great packaging!
Hit: 5 Stars

This was such a good idea: Take Gould's 1955 & 1981 versions of the Goldberg Variation and include them in a single set along with a nice bonus CD which contains an lengthy interview with Gould. The packaging here is first rate as is the remastered sound. These recordings should be in the library of any music enthusiast!
