If you love music this indeed needs to be in your collection of albums. You can hear the warmth of Cuba in the sounds and rhythms of the tracks. If you aren't having the brightest of days it will lift you out of any kind of 'blue' mood you might be in. Buyt it!
Free Music Review: Recommended only if you're in one of these two categories... Hit: 5 StarsHonestly, I can think only of two groups of people who will enjoy this recording, and if you're in either group, I urge you to order it immediately if not sooner. If you're one of those totally or mostly unfamiliar with Cuban jazz, you'll love this. It's a celebration of life, full of good humor and vigor. The excitement of the music is bound to get to you, and you'll wonder why you've never given it a chance before. On the other hand, you might be quite familiar with this sound, with the vocals of veterans such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Pio Leyva, Manuel 'Puntillita Licea, Raul Planas, Jose Antonio 'Maceo' Rodriguez, and Felix Valoy, and with the full sound of trumpets, teombones, enhanced by sax, flute, and piano. If so, you'll find this the best you've heard, and will insist on its being in your collection. If you're in neither group, well, what can I say?
Free Music Review: Perfection at its Finest Hit: 5 StarsRarely do you run across such an incredible group of such masterful musicians. This was true for Miles, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Every musician in these ensembles were leaders and masters of the music themselves and frequenly went on to be leaders. These groups as well as The Afro Cuban All-Stars on this recording especially are incredible. I have been listening to this CD over and over and no matter how many times you listen to this great music you always hear something new. It is amazing, Monk's music has this quality as well as Cecil Taylor. This is one of the finest CDs I have heard. From the piano, timbales, trombonists, trumpets, bassist, vocalists; it is frankly beyond verbal description. Each piece is so complete. This music is the work of geniuses. It is the same wonderment that one would have if you just stood at "The Night Watch". No matter how many times you look at it you still marvel. "How could someone create sometime so infinite and yet so accessible?" The only element that could surpass this is a live concert. This is a beautiful, splendid, masterpiece!!
Free Music Review: Just off the Hook! Hit: 5 StarsThey be jammmmmmmin! Of particular note are (#1) Amor Verdadero, (#4) the tilte cut, (#6) Los sitio' Asereand, and (#9) Clasiqueando con Rub?n. I'll tell you what... if I could Salsa dance, this would definitely keep me happy. But hey... even if you can't dance (like me), the music is just beyond outstanding. The horns really pump and the arrangements and syncopation are fabulous while the contrasting rhythms just totally gets your blood pumpin. The worst thing (if you can really call it bad) about (Good) afro-cuban music is that you will be unable to concentrate on anything else while it's playing. So I don't recommend putting it on as background music because everything else will be soon forgotten as the sound just takes a hold of you and doesn't let go. There just isn't a bad cut on the entire disc. A must for any TRUE music lovers collection.
Free Music Review: A Nice Little Collection Hit: 5 StarsHow much fun this one is. I'm normally not a big horn fan--the brass on most, if not all, of this list is razor sharp. I also liked the guitar work--definitely unexpected, but a pleasant surprise.
