Free Music Review: "Honey, check it out/you got me mezmerized/wit ya black hair/and ya fat a$$ thighs..." Hit: 5 StarsOut of every rap group that has ever been out, A Tribe Called Quest set a standard for how rhymes and inventive beats should be and have always attained mass appeal with every release, mainly their first three. Needless to say, when "Midnight Marauders" dropped in 1993, heads everywhere were starting to catch on to their smooth beats and intellegent rhymes, namely in part to the massive singles "Award Tour" and "Electric Relaxation", which have come to inspire future MC's and groups, such as Black Star and OutKast. The cd plays out like a computer program with the "Midnight Marauder Tour Guide" intro. For the most part, Ali Shaheed's perfected his beats iwth smooth horns but rough drums and bass. Also, Q-Tip and Phife's sound has improved significantly. The rest of the highlights are "Lyrics To Go" (perfect for a night drive through the city), "Midnight" talks about how ish pops off at night, "8 Million Stories" is Phife's track about a bunch of f'd up situations, but the real stand out "Sucka Nigga", one of the strongest tracks about the use of the word "nigga" in the black community, is Tip's track ("Now the little shorties say it all of the time/and a whole bunch of niggas throw the word in they rhyme/yo I start to flinch, as I try not to say it/but my lips is like the oowop as I start to spray it"). Some like to say that Tribe got commercial with this release, but in all honesty listen to this and you'd agree that they actually took the sound of Jazz-Rap/Boom-Bap to another level, as they have on their ultimate classic release, "The Low End Theory". If you looking for something different than Crunk/Snap music, this is it.
Free Music Review: A Tribe Called Quest- Midnight Marauders Hit: 5 StarsA Tribe Called Quest's (Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife Dawg) third album "Midnight Marauders" (1993) is a Hip-Hop classic. Two of the early Rap albums I got as gifts, were this release and Tribe's previous album "The Low End Theory" (1991). Being [..]back then I did not really absorb the lyrics till years later, what I loved then and still love today was the production, the way Tribe infused an unforgettable blend of Rap, Funk and Jazz. The short intro "Midnight Marauders Tour Guide" echoes in my head years later, which is followed up the upbeat "Steve Biko" (Stir It Up). "Award Tour" is simply outstanding; love the beat, chorus, and lyrics to this cut. The beats get darker and the topics more substantial on cuts like "8 Million Stories", "Suck N****" and "Midnight". Then Tribe flips it back to more laidback tracks starting with the party cut "We Can Get Down", which is followed by the excellent "Electric Relaxation" a track that has Tribe talking to the ladies backed by an addictive beat. The Tribe continued to shine on "Oh My God", the smooth "The Chase Pt 2" and "Lyrics to Go". The closing track "God Lives Through" finishes the album off on a high note. Reflective, fun and intelligent lyricism matched with Ali Shaheed Muhammad's out of this world production make "Midnight Marauders" an album I recommend for every collection.
