Free Music Notes for Midnight MaraudersFree Music Review: "Like to take this time to say what up to Kool G my name is Q-Tip The Midnight Maruader...." Hit: 5 StarsYou finish the rest"Vibes & Stuff"
Well I first heard of Tribe when I was in junior high when I was hooked on 50 Cent in 2003 but once I was with my bro and my friends and was listening to the radio and heard the song "Find A Way" and I was hooked on them.
Now im done reminsicing now lets get to the album. Phife and Tip are on point through the whole release and their chemistry is as strong like on "The Low End Theory". As the production was excellent on the LET this one climbed to bigger steps from the beats ranging from songs like "Award Tour", Electric Relaxation" and "Lyrics To Go"(you gotta love that sample lol).
As the production packs a punch the lyrics on this album are dope as well from Phife tellin his stories about struggles on "8 Million Stories", Tip addressing N word on "Sucka Ni**a" to Tips story on the song "Midnight" backed up by a smooth beat.
Overall this album is album is just perfect album and is the perfect marriage between beats to lyrics. The only thing I missed on this album as they only had only a couple guest apperances(Trugoy doing the chorus on Award Tour, Busta on Award Tour and Extra P). I wish they would have people like Diamond D, Brand Nubian would appear on the album but at least they have some people with Extra P dropping a memorable verse dropping lines like
"Large youse the soul brother that I'd like to
eff with for the rest of my life" yeah yeah now check the method"
anyways if you dont have this album your missing out especially if your fans of De La, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, etc. so do yourself a favor and PICK IT UP
Favorite Tracks: All of them but if I had to pick one it would probably be either "Electric Relaxation", "Lyrics To Go" or "Sucka N*gga" can't choose lol
Free Music Review: Ladies and Gentlemen, lend them your ears! Hit: 5 StarsWhat more can I say about that hasnt been said? This album is easily ATCQ's best work to date. When I first heard Phife's solo joint butter, I thought that was his best solo cut until I heard 8 Million Stories. Fire is the only way I can describe that track. Award Tour was great first single because it gives you exactly what you're going to get from this album: quality hip hop. Sucka N---- is Q-tip's explanation for the infamous "N" word. Electric Relaxation is one of the best hip hop song for ladies ever. Phife Dawg steals the show on Oh My God while Busta Rhymes provides the rowdy hook. As far as flaws dont even play yourself like that. This album is a classic in every sense of the word. The production is great and Phife Dawg and Q-Tip flowed well from track to track. Recommended? Is that a trick question? Of course! Standouts: STEVE BIKO(STIR IT UP), AWARD TOUR, 8 MILLION, MIDNIGHT, ELECTRIC RELAXATION, CLAP YOUR HANDS, OH MY GOD, THE CHASE and LYRICS TO GO.
Free Music Review: The Holy Grail of Hip-Hop Hit: 5 StarsI'll keep it short. This is what hip-hop is meant to be. No gimmicks or bubblegum glamour here folks. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg come up with some of the best lyrics and flow in the genre. Ali Shaheed Muhammed's beats fit and are really addictive. There will never be anything like "Midnight Marauders".
Free Music Review: You Gots to Believe up in Quest Hit: 5 StarsThe group's first two albums were great in their own rights, but were still rough around the edges as the group, still teenagers at the time, were still finding themselves. Midnight Marauders is when the group came into their own and grew musically and emotionally. They have always been jazz based, but they took the beats to a new level on the disk with Award Tour, Midnight, and Electric Relaxation still ranking as three of the groups best.
As for the emotional point, here is where A Tribe Called Quest became more socially conscience dedicating a song to apartheid activist with Steve Biko (Stir it Up), called out a Sucka N****, and the Tour Guide for the album pointed out the increase of AIDS in the Black and Latino communities and letting you know, "You're not any less of a man if you don't pull the trigger; you're not necessarily a man if you do." But there are plenty of songs to get your groove on with Award Tour, We Can Get Down, and Oh My God to this day can start any house party.
Yeah the previously mentioned Tour Guide can get a little annoying after multiple listens and it really hurt right around the time Phife Dawg uttered the line, Your styles are incomplete same as Vinny Testaverde" he got traded to the Brown and replaced Bernie Kosar (another brilliant move by Bill Belichicken) as QB prompting the team to be so bad it moved. Even with all that, this outing from Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad not only is one of the greatest rap albums of all time but one of the greatest albums across all genres.
Free Music Review: What, Mr. Levin? Hit: 4 StarsThe twice-printed [at time of this writing] editorial view above has two big problems, in my opinion. One is that the reviewer mistyped the song title "Award Tour"--but no hard feelings yet. What gets me is how he can say things like this: "...Their most uninteresting...curs[ed] with consistent quality."
Hello?! I understand that Mr. Levin may have wanted a slightly more varied mix of tunes, and the engineering here is quite sonically smooth. However, that's no excuse for trying to bag on the superb vehicle of "Oh My God," "Steve Biko," and other songs that groove all night long!
The list of praise is long enough, so I'll just say that aside from several explicit parts (which Tribe is free to include but I personally do not condone or like hearing--the only reason for a missing star) this is an album that I often play, to the point where I hum tunes while in transit! Check it out.
