Free Music Notes for A Tribute To Joni MitchellFree Music Review: Different is good Hit: 4 StarsWhile I'm also disappointed by the omission of certain artists who were originally set to participate, there is an excellent variety of voices on this CD. If it had been a collection of folk-based soundalikes, it might not have yielded any new perspectives on the songs -- and what's the point of that?
The tracks that are most satisfying are the ones which bring the songs into new styles and genres. I can't get enough of Sufjan Steven's "Free Man in Paris." Other standouts are Cassandra Wilson, kd lang, and Emmylou Harris, one of the few singers who could ever be entrusted with a song as delicate and heartbreaking as "The Magdalene Laundries."
Probably the deepest disappointment is Annie Lennox's cover of "Ladies of the Canyon." Her voice is just too big for the song; she would have fared better with something like "Black Crow" or "Nothing Can Be Done." Another regret is that nearly all of the songs are from Joni Mitchell's first few albums. I hope another tribute album comes to pass with a greater sampling of her later music.
Free Music Review: This album will make you BLUE.... Hit: 1 StarsAs a 50 year old who buys a lot of music, there are 3 albums from the early to mid 70's that I still play regularly - John Martyn's "Bless the Weather", Bob Dylan's "New Morning" and Joni Mitchell's "Blue". So I was quite interested to hear about this tribute album and was pleased to see that so many songs from that great album BLUE were included. The unfortunate reality is that those songs, along with most of the others, are very disappointing. After just three listens I have found that the absolute "ho-hum" nature of this project has left me feeling very BLUE........ I should have spent my hard earned on something else!
Free Music Review: NOT background music Hit: 5 StarsI'm amazed to read such bad reviews of this cd, although I must admit that the first time I put it on I was at work, paying little attention, and thought that it just wasn't working for me. Then I gave it another chance on a good sound system, in a dark room, really listening and I found it moving almost beyond words.
I'm a Joni fanatic from all the way back, I've seen her live many times and know all of her work backwards and forwards. That said, I find this tribute to be made up of really thrilling homages to her music. Brad Mehldau's Don't Interrupt the Sorrow? Oh my gosh, what an interpretation! No, not a note for note retelling, but an amazing styling that brings something new to the table. Cassandra Wilson's For the Roses gives me goosebumps. A Case of You has long been my favorite Joni and Prince brought out all of the sexiness, longing and sadness of that song. The only track that I found disappointing was James Taylor's River. It's a lovely, faithful rendition of a beautiful song, but he doesn't tell me anything new about the music or the lyric.
A great cover makes you want to go back and listen to the original with a new, refreshed point of view. This tribute doesn't threaten my adoration of pure Joni at all, but celebrates her music as timeless. It goes way beyond categorizing her music as "folk" or even "jazz", which is what I think Joni has always been saying about her own work.
I urge those folks who don't like this disc to give it another chance. For me, this'll get a whole lot of play on my ipod, but I won't be playing it at a dinner party.
Free Music Review: nice album Hit: 4 StarsA Tribute To Joni Mitchell
This is a really nice album. I was first attracted to it because I like all of the contributing artists, and I like Joni Mitchell. What I found after listening to it is that it's a well-produced compilation where each song flows from one to the next, effortlessly. This is unlike other tribute albums, where you have a head banging song next to a ballad. I've actually played this one about 10 times in the past week, which says a lot.
Free Music Review: What a disappointment! Hit: 2 StarsI was hoping for something a little more inspired. As others have said, already, none of the performers really seemed interested in this project.
And why did they have to go out of their way to sing their song in such a way that it is as different as it can be from Joni's original? What really confuses me is why they didn't ask Cyndi Lauper to sing "Carrie"? The TV special that attempted to honor this, the first lady of song for the last 30 years, was nearly as bad as this CD. But Lauper's version of this bouncy song from "Blue" was inspired and heartfelt and(something completely lacking from this effort) fun. Skip this disc. Buy the sublime originals. I guess no one does Joni as well as the woman herself.
