Free Music Notes for A Tribute To Joni MitchellFree Music Review: Finally some real recognition Hit: 5 StarsI have been a Joni Mitchell fan since 1967 when I first heard Blue. I was 12 years old. Now at the ripe old age of 53 I still love her music as passionately as ever. She has not been given enough recognition and this, from her peers, is so gratifying to hear. I love how each artist has made the song they chose to sing in their own style but still keeping the words intact. Hear, hear!
Free Music Review: Intriguing lineup and performances Hit: 5 StarsFirst of all, I don't find this to be a traditional "Tribute" record that celebrates the artist themself as much as it seems concerned with delving into the songs themselves. A good thing. All the artists represented here are clearly well-chosen and well thought out entries. The ever-loopy Sufjan Stevens and Bjork pay homage in unexpected wasy. Both are both at the forefront of today's great musical artistry and it shows how relevant Joni's music is to this day. If they included Joni's West Coast friends (like Counting Crows' Big Yellow Taxi) or fellow scenesters from the days of 1970's Laurel Canyon, it would have been a boring record. James Taylor version of "River" is a big enough dose. Overall this record is no cozy affair, and I think that is one of it's hidden strengths. Built for long term listening? I dunno. Good enough for now though.
Annie Lenox's "Ladies of the Canyon" is as strong of a cover as any song off of her record, Medusa. It's incredible to think she never included it. Prince's "A Case of You" does such a radical reconstruction of the song and makes it his own and shows what a genuis both cover artist and 'coveree' truly are.
To me, the standout of this record is Sarah McLaughlin's "Blue". It's almost haunting how similiar she evokes a younger Joni Mitchell. Even better is that it sounds like a great lost track from Sarah's legendary record "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy".
There are many other fine moments on this record.
Free Music Review: Lackluster tribute-Sorry, NPR Hit: 1 StarsQuirky, odd and unimpressive choice of singers, songs and styles with the exception of James Taylor and K.D. Lang. Should have fellow Canadians like Nelly Furtado, Neil Young, Diana Krall, Chantal Kreviazuk and even Gino Vannelli in the mix. Perhaps include Karrin Allyson(who did a beautiful jazzy 'Blue Motel Room' in her own album), Lizz Wright, Erin Bode, Bonnie Raitt, Beth Neilsen-Chapman, Linda Rondstadt and Renee Oldstead. WNPR/WNYC heavily promoted this CD for their pledge-drive but featured only a short excerpt of K.D. Lang's 'Help Me' as a lead-on. Quite disingenuous on their part. For Joni Mitchell fans however, I recommend a much better tribute CD which is available only at indie-stores(internet) and download at iTunes(get the full album, it's that good). It's by a Danish group of unabashedly Joni-Mitchell fans who called themselves...ready for this... -Big Yellow Taxi. They even made instrumental versions of the songs in that album for karaoke use-if you think you can sing better than these guys/gals-try them. I would give 4.9 stars(there is no such thing as perfection) for THAT album. Love to have somebody who bought 'BIG YELLOW TAXI-A Tribute to Joni Mitchell' for responses(hopefully, positively) to my recommendation
Free Music Review: Prince loves Joni Hit: 4 StarsFor me the single most impressive track on this interesting CD is Prince's. Who knew that Joni did gospel? Only Prince got it, and his selectivity in choosing only certain lyrics from "A Case of You" and then putting together a heartfelt, loving, and totally original arrangement keeps knocking me out, even after many, many listenings. It makes me long to see him do a total Joni tribute CD. I remember reading somewhere that "Hissing of Summer Lawns" is one of his favorite albums, which surprised me in a way, but then not in another way, because I know that Prince is one astute, accomplished musician. Anyway, even though this CD was somewhat uneven for me, besides the Prince track I also admired Emmylou Harris and Annie Lennox, as well as Elvis Costello. I think anyone who is a Joni fan will want to have this CD, just to be reminded that her genius continues to offer fresh inspiration to other artists.
Free Music Review: Dont buy this!!!!! Hit: 1 StarsI have never been so dissapointed in a CD in my life. I actually thought this was Joni Mithchel herself. I didnt have my glasses so I just bought it. What I love about Joni is not just her music but her voice and her take on her own work. These songs are interpretations of her music- AWFUL!!!!
Dont buy it!
