Free Music Notes for A Very Special Christmas 3

Free Music Review: A Mixed Bag
Hit: 3 Stars

As might be expected from this type of charity sampler, "Very Special Christmas 3" (like the other "Very Special Christmas" releases) does not hold together well as a unified album. Sheryl Crow's "Blue Christmas" is a highlight for me, as well as Enya's "Silent Night" and Dave Matthews' "Christmas Song" (an original composition, not "The Christmas Song"). And, as a Steve Winwood fan, I find his recording of "Christmas Is Now Drawing Near at Hand" (a beggars' tune from the Middle Ages) very interesting. However, the rest is largely forgetable, disposable stuff.

In short, if you really like a particular artist on this album, you'll probably like their contribution. Otherwise, don't bother.

Free Music Review: New tunes mixed with traditionals, something for everyone
Hit: 4 Stars

Many types of music are represented in this third charity collection. New tunes by Billy Corgan, Dave Matthews and John Popper blend nicely with traditionals by Sting and Natalie Merchant. Adding some needed bounce to the collection, Rev. Run and the Christmas All Stars do an interesting take on "Santa Baby." Some misfires are to be found, (Chris Cornell's "Ave Maria" and the creepy "We Three Kings" by Patti Smith) but a good contribution to this worthy series.

Free Music Review: Our favorite
Hit: 5 Stars

This is by far our favorite Christmas CD. Our old copy got so scratched up, we're buying a new one this year! From Thankgiving to New year's, this CD is on rotation in our carousel. Chris Cornell's version of "Ave Maria" is so powerful, I could listen to it all year long. We recommend this CD to anyone who loves Christmas and the magic of great, great music. It will definitely be a favorite in anyone's collection.

Free Music Review: A hit and miss collection
Hit: 4 Stars

This is the least christmas sounding cd of the first four Very Special Christmas albums (read: very little jingle bells and rarer carols). The songs have a much more all year radio friendly vibe than the past collections. That can either be a plus or a minus for you. For me, eventhough I enjoy different kinds of Christmas music, I like some of it to be classic sounding so this didn't quite fullfill my needs. But to be sure, there are some terrific standouts. "Christmas in the City" (a R&B/hip hop description of a NYC christmas that brings back so many wonderful memories of my Christmas' there) and the outrageous "Santa Baby" ('Slip a Benzo under the tree, for me') as well as the quiet and melancholy "Blue Christmas" are a few of my favorites. Others like "Oi To The World" and the Enya song I could have deffinitely done without.

So, for me it's a mixed bag. About half the songs I really enjoy a lot and have coppied onto a custom cd, but the others don't get played much, if at all. So this gets 4 stars based on the strength of the songs I enjoy. All of which are top notch.

Free Music Review: My favorite of the "Very Special Christmas" series
Hit: 5 Stars

This honestly has something for everyone. Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, Sheryl Crow, Dave Mathews, and a Puff collaboration. This is the first Christmas album I start playing come Christmastime, and it stays on constant rotation until after the 25th. My favorite? Hootie and the Blowfish makes "The Christmas Song" sound like the first time you've ever heard it, but Blues Traveler's original "Christmas" had me playing it over and over again until I'd memorized every single word. A definate must have for Christmas music fans.
