Free Music Review: Back In Black
Hit: 5 Stars

Bon Scott's alcohol-related death in early 1980 couldn't have come at a worse time for AC/DC; the band was poised for worldwide breakthrough success, as their last album, Highway to Hell, was Angus and company's first gold-certified stateside release. They made an excellent choice in selecting Brian Johnson as their new vocalist; while he had the same bluesy edge as Scott, Johnson sang with more power and conviction. The first album from the new group, Back in Black, was issued only five months after Scott's passing but immediately rocketed up the charts, eventually becoming one of rock's all-time classics. By 1997, it had sold an astounding 16 million copies in the U.S. alone. Musically, the band hadn't changed much, although producer "Mutt" Lange helped the group focus their high voltage rock. The result was such perennial rock anthems as the stomping title track, the eerie "Hell's Bells," the melodic "Shoot to Thrill," the album-closing battle cry "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," and one of AC/DC's best and most recognizable tracks, "You Shook Me All Night Long." Not a single weak track is included, even the lesser-known album tracks are strong ("Have a Drink on Me," "Shake a Leg,"). Back in Black is the ultimate example of a band turning a career-threatening negative into a remarkable positive and stands alongside such landmark albums as Van Halen, Led Zeppelin II, Are You Experienced?, and Paranoid as hard rock's greatest achievements. Rock music rarely gets better than Back in Black.

Free Music Review: The Quintessential AC/DC Album Is Now Even Better!
Hit: 5 Stars

Released in 1980, "Back In Black" featured new lead singer Brian Johnson who replaced former singer Bonn Scott who died months earlier. With the death of Scott, there were sceptics that thought this was the end of the hard rocking Aussy band. But to their surprise "Back In Black" was a huge success with absolutely no filler tracks. The album produced a number of hits with the title "Back In Black", "Hells Bells" and "You Shook Me All Night Long". In my opinion some of the best songs on the album were not hits such as "Shoot To Thrill", "What Do You Do For Money Honey" and "Shake A Leg". With the addition of Johnson to the line up the band seemed to be stronger than ever, and Angus Young's guitar licks are absolutely amazing. Just listen to the lead guitar in "Shake A Leg" and I'm sure you'd agree. Numerous soundtracks have included AC/DC songs from this album, notably the Steven King film "Maximum Overdrive" which featured "Hells Bells" and "You Shook Me All Night Long". This newley remastered edition of "Back In Black" now on the Epic Label surpasses the older 1994 remastered version in that the volume is pumped up higher, there's definately more bottom end and mid-range. I actually listened to both versions of the disc and this new one blows the other away. The digipack that stores the new remastered version is attractive and there's an excellent booklet inclosed with color photos, etc. of the band. If you want to hear hard rock the way it was meant to be then pick this superb cd up and enjoy.

Free Music Review: A Work of Absolute Greatness
Hit: 5 Stars

AC/DC's Back In Black is their crowning acheivement as a band. Lead Singer Brian Johnson rose above and beyond the call of duty when it was time to write the words to the songs on this album. Some call Back In Black over-rated, I call it absolutely incredible. The album is packed full of emotion ranging from mourning, loss, and death to sex to booze to rock and roll. The album shows AC/DC's amazing ability to rise up from the ashes and return again and again. Hells Bells is the band's personal farewell to their fallen front man Bon Scott. It is an erie yet very emotional song. Shoot To Thrill is a grimey outlaw rumble that is just fun to rock out to, it's a really catchy tune. When you arrive to that point in the CD where Tracks 6 & 7 are, you can't help but be astonished at what you hear. Back In Black and You Shook Me All Night Long back to back, it doesn't get much better than that. Back In Black insured AC/DC's place as one of the leaders of their generation of music. This album is phenomenal. Their finest hour. Two Thumbs Way Up, a perfect ten score, and a five star rating from me on this one. I highly recommend it to anyone slightly at all that is a fan of rock music. My other personal AC/DC Recommendations are The Razors Edge Album-1990, Let There Be Rock-1977, Powerage-1978, High Voltage-1975, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap-1976, For Those About To Rock-1981, Highway To Hell-1979 and everything else they've ever recorded. Their great. Long live the Thunder from Down Under.

Free Music Review: "Back in Black" - Remastered.
Hit: 5 Stars

At this point, I really don't need to tell you the story behind "Back in Black." You already know that it's the first AC/DC album since founding member Bon Scott's death and the first featuring replacing singer Brian Johnson. You already know that it's one of the biggest-selling albums around the world. And you already know that it's the Aussie-based group's best album to date. What you may NOT know is that the repackaged and remastered edition is a must-have, even if you already own prior versions on LP, cassette, or CD. Re-released around the time the band received Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status, "Back in Black" appears in a Digipak cover with cool photos of the band, as well as a nice booklet with more pictures and a well written commentary by Rolling Stone veteran editor David Fricke. And the sound quality? I personally listened to the previous CD edition and this version back to back, and not only can you hear the difference but also FEEL the difference. The new version projects with more force and clarity. The previous CD was okay as it was, but Sony really took it to a whole new level. You'll get to hear tracks like "Hells Bells," "Back in Back" and "Shoot to Thrill" like you never heard them before. So this review should end any speculation as to whether you should buy "Back in Black" again. You can never own too many copies of an album like this, and Sony gave it the upgrade it richly deserves.

Free Music Review: One of the greatest albums of all time!
Hit: 5 Stars

I own over a 1000 cds but there are only a handful of albums where I think every track is great. This is one of those albums! Even 25 years after the release of Back In Black I still listen to it at least once a month. Songs like Hells Bells and Have A Drink On Me still get my blood pumping. After the unfortunate death of charismatic lead singer Bon Scott, AC/DC came back stronger than ever. Enter ex-Geordie vocalist Brian Johnson and the band would create a classic album that would go on to sell more than 21 million copies in the US alone! Apparently Bon had all the lyrics written for this follow-up to the excellent Highway To Hell, but when Brian joined he decided to re-write them. I don't think Brian's sense of humor is quite as clever as Bon's but there are plenty of classic lyrics all over Back In Black and Brian has quite a set of pipes. It would have been interesting to hear Bon sing these songs but maybe it was his death that pushed the band to another level. The production and songwriting on Back In Black are the highest level the band ever achieved. Angus' lead guitar is simply the best of his career. Check out the solos to Hells Bells, Shake A Leg, and the title track! And the riffs are some of the catchiest that the Young brother's ever came up with. I'm not going to bother going into each track because they all rock. Back In Black is an album that everyone should own!!
