Free Music Review: Flawless? Possibly!
Hit: 5 Stars

Back In Black is possibly a flawless album. It rocks in places it needed to and slows down the pace where it's relevant. Where "Shoot To Thrill" was a touch of what Bon Scott gave AC/DC, "Hell's Bells" slows down the pace to a practically demonic sludge. You are guaranteed to commence in headbanging no matter where you drop the needle.

Brian Johnson, as suitable as he is as a replacement for the most excellent Bon Scott, still gives Back In Black the character it needed to make this album truly a classic hard rock set.

And oddly enough, the album can actually be deemed important, not for the well known cuts, "You Shook Me All Nite Long" and "Back In Black", but also for the lesser known cuts, "Let Me Put My Love Into You", "Have A Drink On Me" and "Given The Dog A Bone". And even though "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise pollution" falters slightly, you can still make this album out to be one of the truest rock classics still alive today.

Some will tell you, "It's not Bon Scott!" and they'd be right. It's not. But it is the second phase of a great rock band who never gave you filler. Ever notice there is no Greatest Hits collection? Don't need one. Any album is a super set of classic rock treasures.

... Earlier this spring, I was watching the rock and roll hall of fame induction special on VH1 and caught the induction of AC/DC. I found myself enjoying their performance a lot. Nice to know that some things haven't changed and AC/DC's brand of bluesy hard rock is one of those constant presences in life that you're glad that it hasn't changed. After the special, I put "Back in Black" on my mental wish list of cds that I had to have. Much to my surprise, I found a copy of the new remastered version of the cd ... I immediately snatched it up. I haven't heard this album in over ten years and much to my amazement, the music sounds as fresh as it did back in the late '80s, early '90s for me. The familiar power chords of the Young brothers, the thunderous rhythm section of Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams, and the amazing howling from Brian Johnson sounds as amazing as did for me in high school. The cd sounds even more incredible when the volume has been cranked up. Songs like "Hells Bells" and the perennial classic "You Shook Me All Night Long" are mindblowing to say the very least. I feel like I have rediscovered an old friend with "Back in Black". Truly one of the best rock and roll albums of all time, at least for me.

I usually don't like rock like this; my rock includes bands that are loud, agressive and annoyingly heavy(Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, In Flames, Testament, etc...) to highly progressive and technical(Black Sabbath, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, etc.)But you know what?; I bought this CD 10 years ago, and it hasn't left my car since. It's full of chugging, blues inspired grimy riffs that have yet to be equaled by many. And speaking of riffs, with the exception of Aerosmith's Joe Perry, has there been a guitarist that has created catchier and more memorable riffs than Angus Young? And who better to replaced the deceased Bon Scott than the equally fiery Brian Johnson? The classics are all here; Black In Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, Hell's Bells and the ultimate rock opinion statement, Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution. This album is the transistion from the silky balladry and pomp rock of the 70's bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen to the 80's raunch rock that countless hair bands adopted as their style. May albums have sold millions or records that were not worthy; this is not one of them. Buy the album and join the club; as a matter of fact, buy everything that AC/DC's ever written, you dumbass!

I remember when I was learning how to play rock guitar, this album was the one I was constantly jamming to to learn the art of bending and vibrato and the blues cliches and I owe these guys a great debt for that.

Angus Young is still one of my favourite guitarists after all these years and if you ever wanted to know what Chuck Berry would sound had he been born 20 years later, this would be it. Listen to all the great double-stop bending Angus does here and all without any guitar effects; just the amp distortion!

With all the flash and on-stage persona and antics of the band, it's easy to overlook just how good this band is as a group of musicians in their own right as well. Guitarists can tell you just how hard it is to play with great feel but Angus seems to do so effortlessly.

Now with this remastered version, the tracks seem to have been given a new lease of life and with John "Mutt" Lange (Shania Twain's husband)the great producer behind the sound engineering of this album, the result is unsurprisingly a very good rock classic destined to stand the test of time. Probably AC/DC's best ever album and one of my all-time favourites.

To say `Back in Black' is a required purchase for any discerning rock music collection would be a gross understatement. From the album opening bell tolls of `Hells Bells' to the last chords of `Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution' this album throws down the gauntlet and pounds out some of the best riffs you are likely to hear in a long time. Brian Johnson adds his screaming vocals to some already awesome tracks and puts the big shiny, metal cherry on this particular rocking cake. There are so many great tracks here it is hard to single any out for special mention and this album could almost be a `best of' collection due to each song being representative of the bands style and gripping you from the start and not letting go. Saying that, my personal favourite has to be `Back in Black' which has an incredible dirty riff that still plasters a smile on my face even after repeated listening. Needless to say this comes highly recommended and if this is your first taste of AC/DC I guarantee it will leave you with a big sloppy grin on your face and wanting more.
