Free Music Notes for Powerage (Dlx)

Free Music Review: Doin' nothing means a lot to me too! Their best album to me.
Hit: 5 Stars

I can't stop listening to this CD lately; I musta heard it 4 or 5 times yesterday! While initially introduced to AC/DC YEARS ago thru If You Want Blood, then Back in Black, and of course those and Highway To Hell are classics, this album hits the spot for me more than the others. Bon wanted to have lighter subject matter for what became Highway To Hell, and it worked; that album is a great one about sex and partying.
So what! This album is so fantastic, it's criminally underrated.
Rock 'n Roll Damnation was added at the last moment by Atlantic for they felt there was nothing "radio-friendly" on this. What about Sin City?!
This album is a moody, sensuous album, sometimes desperate in its desire; witness Gimme A Bullet ("I'll make believe it's you"--WOW!); Kicked In The Teeth is about, well, that wrong kinda woman again (probably a Scorpio one--they're Evil!!). Gone Shootin' is a beautiful slower one--I'll take this over The Jack anyday! It has a great groove to it; there's a radio broadcast from Boston that shows it was played at a faster pace live which surely DID add to it, but it's still a cool groover here anyhow. Riff Raff? What needs to be said about that monster! Okay, this one is better (maybe) on If You Want Blood --it's arguable.
And dig how MENACING the part of Sin City sounds where the song drops down; it never sounded better live, with lines like "ladders give...snakes take"..."ain't got a hope in hell, that's my belief". Sounds like Bon's saying, We're all doomed, I'm gonna have a great time while I CAN! That was kinda his aim anyway, wasn't it?
Now for the truly greatest moment on here...Down Payment Blues!!
Down Payment Blues is surely one of the greatest songs AC/DC EVER did, a lost CLASSIC; (why do bands forget their best songs sometimes? like, what ever happened to Shake a Leg from Back In Black, they never played it after that tour, did they? It was forgotten, regardless.)
Down Payment Blues was noted by Slash in Rolling Stone as one of his favorite songs -- now, I ain't no Guns and Roses fan, but he's a good guitarist, and showed some mighty fine taste there!
He said something about how the chord changes are brilliant on it; well, I'll have to agree (tho he surely knows about it like I don't; I can just hear it and FEEL it).
It has some of my favorite AC/DC lyrics as well -- "I got holes in my shoes and I'm way overdue"..."I got myself a cadillac but I can't afford the gasoline" (and this was before gas cost gold dust!)
Best line: "Doing nothing means a lot to me" -- A-MEN!!! This states what he sang in Rock 'n' Roll Singer, but a WHOLE lot better, and -- it's to the point! Short but oh so FINE!!
He can't afford the rent, but bring on the champagne! "Can't even feed my cat with Social Security"--WOAH, that's a depressing line!
But the song isn't, it's a f---ing masterpiece! The best song these guys ever did!!!
Man, I can't recommend this album enough. I only wish the European version-- with a great song not on here, and different mixes on 6 songs (!!!) (drool!!) -- was available on CD. I never even heard it on vinyl, and I used to have everything these guys ever did, practically. AND here's the rub here-- the missing song "Cold Hearted Man" (which I thankfully have in my vinyl box as a 12" single) -- is FANTASTIC. WHAT the HELL is WRONG with record companies?? If they're in it for the money only--and lets not pretend they care about ANYTHING else-- why isn't there another version available , the "other" one?? Afraid it might sell and make some money, ya bozos?? Stupid record companies!!
That aside, this is my absolute favorite AC/DC disc, above back In Black, my second fave. Both are awesome, but this one ain't got the recognition it deserves.

Malcolm HIMSELF said "I know a lot of people respect it. A lot of real rock and roll AC/DC fans, the real pure rock and roll guys. I think that's the most under-rated album of them all."

Take a chance. Buy it. You like AC/DC, you won't be sorry.

THAT'S MY BELIEF!!

Powerage (Dlx) Poster

2003 remastered reissue of 1978 album packaged in a digipak with 16 page full color booklet containing all original album art, many unpublished photos, classic memorabilia, and liner notes. Epic.
AC/DC's fourth album is the lull after the triumph of Let There Be Rock and before the mighty peaks of If You Want Blood You've Got It and Highway to Hell. Powerage contains all the familiar AC/DC trademarks: Bon Scott's rather less than Yeatsian lyrical vision ("Rock & Roll Damnation," "Up to My Neck in You"), Angus Young's brilliantly minimal guitar playing, a rhythm section as relentless and efficient as an infantry regiment, and the astute production of former Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young; however, it lacks a truly transcendent moment, a "Whole Lotta Rosie" or a "T.N.T." Of course, even an average AC/DC album is an eloquent lesson in the fundamentals of rock & roll, and by that token Powerage still blows most opposition out of the water. Bon Scott's exultant declaration of working-class solidarity, "Riff Raff," is worth six Bon Jovi albums on its own. --Andrew Mueller
