Free Music Notes for DecemberundergroundFree Music Review: One of the few albums were every song is good... Hit: 5 StarsI admit, when this album first came out, I was a bit disappointed, but now that it's had this time to familiarize itself to me I think it's one of the greatest albums that's every been released in my lifetime. AFI is past just being a great band. This album has made them into legends in their own time. It's 5 years now since they've made it big, and it's still weird for me. Davey used to live around here where I live, and he was not a person I would have ever picked out as someone that was going to be famous. Nonetheless, though, he's done quite an impressive array for himself.
Free Music Review: The glory days are over Hit: 3 StarsSo basically, I am another one of those advocates for the older, hardcore punk sound that AFI used to wield on "Very Proud of Ya" and "Answer That" but in the past decade or more, there has never been an AFI CD that I haven't been able to listen to.
This CD actually might be better than some of the middle material that AFI put out, like "Sing the Sorrow" and "Art of Drowning"
Well, no, it's not. I wouldn't lie to you. Truth be told, this is the worst CD AFI has ever put out, having said that if you can put out your worst CD and get a three star rating from me, that says something about your band. Even though this is the CD that proves that AFI will never acknowledge, let alone return to, their punk roots, they can still make some really good music. Tracks like "Kill Caustic" and "Miss Murder" can be quite enjoyable for the fans of the old material, and the new softer and more experimental stuff like "37 mm" and "Love Like Winter" are actually quite enjoyable. The thing is you have to be in a certain mood to listen to this stuff, and it's not a CD you can "rock out" to, persay.
Having said that I must say that the vocals are so much better than their last three or four albums. Has anybody noticed that I can listen to an entire AFI CD such as "Sing the Sorrow" only to realize that I can only understand like 20% of the words Davey's saying, and that's not even exaggerating. Davey's voice changed alot from 2003 to 2006 and for me that's a welcomed change. I can actually understand him now for the most part.
I'll keep this as short as I can 'cause I'm sick of writing long reviews. If you buy this it's a gamble whether or not you'll like it. You probably will learn to accept it simply because it is AFI and it will grow on you, just keep an open mind. Know that this is not "Answer That" or "Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes," heck, it's not even "Sing the Sorrow," but it is pretty good, and the addition of influences from different decades of music while keeping an overall steady sound is not an easy thing to do and these guys should be credited for that.
Highlight tracks: "Kill Caustic" "Miss Murder" "The Killing Lights" and if you're into short little lullibies, "Prelude 12/21"
Free Music Review: Reminiscent of the 80s Hit: 4 StarsLike a gourmet meal, I found flavors of Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Slayer within, with maybe just a splash of Green Day for fun. I know that may sound like it may not go together, but who was the first one to think that chocolate and strawberries would? It's fresh, but still with a pang of nostalgia for those of us that lived in the fullness of variety that the 80s had to offer. Quite worth a listen.
Free Music Review: I love it! Hit: 5 StarsThis is one of AFI's best CDs. I can listen to it over and over and never get bored of it. If you are an AFI fan...you should totally buy this CD.
Free Music Review: weak voice sorta okay music Hit: 1 Starsthis band was compared to bauhaus - the old school masters of goth rock. these guys just sound sooo american vanilla especially the voice. generic sound no mystique. the tough guy demon voice is soo dumb sounding to me. this singer sounds like blink 182 to me - which is american bubblegum. get original guys
