Free Music Review: A Great CD by a Great Band
Hit: 5 Stars

I first got into AFI after hearing them on the radio, so I'll admit, I'm not exactly an old-school fan. However, after picking up Sing the Sorrow, I went to purchase this. While I didn't like it on first listen, I put it in again a few days later, and when you really listen to it, it's an amazing CD. Here's the track-by-track rundown:

1. Initiation- Only 39 seconds long, this serves as an intro and does its job, and that's it. 7/10

2. The Lost Souls- I like how this transitions right from Initiation, and it's a decent opening song. 8.5/10

3. The Nephilim- Similar in sound to The Lost Souls, but with a unique feel in its own right. I'm sure that didn't make much sense, but you have to hear it to know what I mean. A good song, though. 8.5/10

4. Ever and a Day- A great song, coming after 2 harder songs, this one is more mellow and slow. Davey's voice sounds especially chilling during the first verse, and the rest of the song is good as well. 10/10

5. Sacrifice Theory- Right after Ever and a Day ends, this one kicks in at high speed, with a cool bassline at the beginning. This song in particular is one of the catchiest on the CD and a lot of fun to listen to. 10/10

6. Of Greetings and Goodbyes- Another powerful song, the chorus, as mentioned by others, sounds kinda like Offspring, but that's not a bad thing, especially in this song. The bridge is unique and pretty cool, too. 9.75/10

7. Smile- A short one here...it's okay, but there's better stuff on here, and this song lacks structure. 7.25/10

8. A Story at Three- Has somewhat of a slow intro, but afterwards it kicks into a strong verse and chorus. This is another one that's extremely catchy, especially the bridge. 9.75/10

9. Days of the Phoenix- This is the supposed single off the CD, but I've never heard or seen it on the radio or TV. However, I can see why this could be a single. Once again, very catchy and the lyrics are pretty cool too. 10/10

10. Catch a Hot One- Davey's screaming throughout most of this one, but unlike Smile, it gets pulled off almost flawlessly. Great music goes along with a great chorus. 9.5/10

11. Wester- This was the first song I liked off of AoD, and as time goes on, it only gets better. This is the song you'll sing along to the most if you get the CD, and the musical backing is strong, as well. 10/10

12. 6 to 8- Unfortunately, this one, another quiet song, isn't as good as Ever and a Day, but it's still pretty good, albeit long (4:21). 9/10

13. The Despair Factor- A decent song, I wonder if its name is derived from the AFI fan club, the Despair Faction. The opening is pretty cool, although the rest of the song is hardly the best on the CD. 8.5/10

14. Morningstar- A quiet one, similar to God Called in Sick Today off of Black Sails or This Time Imperfect from Sing the Sorrow, Morningstar is a fairly catchy, but very solid song. 10/10

15. Battled- The hidden track at the end of Morningstar. The only disappointing part is that after waiting 7 minutes you only get a song that's 1:03. Fast and angry sum up the feel of the song. 8.75/10

Overall, this is a CD that you'll be playing for years to come, should you decide to purchase it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Sing the Sorrow, as there are definitely some signs of it in here. However, if you are new to AFI, this is a good place to start. The songs are solid and it makes a great buy.

And remember to keep on rockin', and happy listening.

Hit: 5 Stars

I wouldn't call any of AFI's music "punk". But I certainly do love this album. Even though it's not as good as STS, It's very artistic, and creative. Here's how I rate the individual songs:

Initiation: 10/10 A very under-rated track. Although short, and without any vocals, it still has alot of build up, and is a very intense introduction to the album.

The Lost Souls: 10/10 This song is perfect! It has great background vocals, and beautiful lead vocals. I love when it slows down and Jade starts playing that very simple, yet unique guitar solo. This song has so much dynamic, and makes the entire album itself better than Black Sails in the Sunset( AFI's most over-rated album).

The Nephilum: 6.5/10 It has a very catchy bass line at the beginning, and really nice guitar riffs, but the chorus is kind-of boring. It's very random, though, which I like! I think this was the most over-rated song on the album, though.

Ever and a Day: 10/10 Simple, and beautiful! Great songwriting, and great vocals.

Sacrifice Theory: 4/10 This song isn't bad. I just think they've made alot of songs in the past that sound just like this one (The Boy Who Destroyed the World, Who Knew).
I like the bass parts, though.

Of Greetings and Goodbyes: 10/10 I love the bridge on this song! It has such good build-up! The writing was perfect! This song really reminds me of a much prettier and more sarcastic version of Totalimmortal.

Smile: 3/10 Not terrible. It ust doesn't have anything interesting about it.

A Story at Three: 7.5/10 This is a really cool song with a lot of key-changes and a cool chorus.

Days of th Phoenix: 10/10 Great Song! Cool Guitar riffs, and awsome background vocals on the chorus. I love how it ends!

Catch a Hot One: 5.5/10 This song is ok. It starts out pretty cool, but the bridge isn't that great. Good guitar parts, though!

Wester:8.9/10 Similar to A Story at Three, and Catch a Hot One, but much better! Beautiful song!

6 to 8: 10/10 One of the most unique and creative songs on the album! It starts out kind of bluesy and then builds up pretty loud. It's got a great guitar solo at the end of it too!

Despair Factor: 10/10 Woah!!! I love this song! It starts out with an electronic rythem, and then turns into a very fast and pretty song. After that, it gets even more beautiful and slows down. I love the soft guitar riff at the end. Great singing!!

Morning Star: 10/10 PERFECT!!! Best Song!! Great vocals. Love the cellos.

Battled: 2/10 This is the worst AFI song that I have ever heard. They could have done a much better job on the hidden track!

Get this album. It's much better than Black Sails in the Sunset! It has more variety. If you get this, move to the A Fire Inside EP. That's another one of my favorites( much better than the All Hallow's EP).

Free Music Review: AFI is at their finest
Hit: 5 Stars

I love "Sing The Sorrow", don't get me wrong, but I believe their best stuff comes from as some may call it, their last underground album, in which every song is finely polished off.. "The Art Of Drowning" offers strong bass and guitar, unbelievable singing from Davey, and untouchable feeling and emotion.. Each song is like a gem:

Initiation: Good beginning, has no lyrics, but nevertheless sets the tone for the album 9/10

The Lost Souls: This is an amazing song.. Davey screams out every word.. It's fast, catchy, and really powerful.. One of my favorites on the album 10/10

The Nephilim: Great song.. Not their best, but great guitars on the song and a good bridge to it 8.5/10

Ever And A Day: A slower, quieter song, but with a solid chorus.. One of the first songs I liked on the CD 8/10

Sacrifice Theory: Crazy song.. It's just under 2 minutes long, very fast and strong.. Great backup singing 10/10

Of Greetings And Goodbyes: First song I liked on this CD.. If you've ever heard "Total Immortal", this song is very similar.. It's one of the best on the CD 10/10

Smile: The only song I'm not crazy about on the CD.. It's still pretty good, but if there's any song I'd call a filler, it's this 6/10

Story At Three: Good guitar at the beginning, fast and punky, and comes to a halt in the bridge, which is slow and amazing.. This is a finely written song 10/10

Days Of The Phoenix: I believe this is their single.. Great bass and guitar and Davey's voice is sick.. One of my favorite AFI songs, period 10/10

Catch A Hot One: Good chorus, catchy song altogether 9.5/10

Wester: Best lyrics on the CD and probably my favorite song on the CD.. Wester is the kind of music that made and will make AFI more popular by the day.. This song is something special 10/10

6 To 8: A real change of pace.. A slower song, but very solid and different 8.5/10

The Despair Factor: Strange song but that's what makes it great.. It makes it's trademark when all the music stops and Davey says "My whole life is a room.. One.. Big.. Dark.. Room" One of my favorites on the album 10/10

Morningstar: Slow, very popular song, quiet but meaningul, and it's the perfect ending to the album and the perfect conjunction for "Sing The Sorrow" 9.5/10

This CD is a must get if you like "Sing The Sorrow", which is the album everyone knows about since they hit the mainstream.. AFI's dark style and the screaming of Davey make them so different and so amazing.. This CD is worth every penny, and you have my 100% guarantee that it won't disappoint you.. I got this CD burned for me before I even bought "Sing The Sorrow", but I never listened to it until I realized how good "Sing The Sorrow" was.. I didn't give it a chance at first because I knew nothing about the band, but I'm glad I did, because now I consider it one of my best CDs.. For anyone feeling hate, lonely, betryal, pain, or just at a loss, this CD is for you.. It's a disc you can really relate to if you need to let it all out.. I recommend this it to ANY punk fan and I hope my review was of help..

Free Music Review: absolutely amazing AFI
Hit: 5 Stars

ok, so in the past year or so i have been thrown through a whirlwind of AFI, buying all of their cds, and just becoming purely obsessed with them and everything about them. out of all of their cds, musically, i think Sing the Sorrow is their best, in how it represents them and their dark dream. now some people argue about selling-out, which is a bunch of bull, but ANYway, i think that Art of Drowning is definitely a close second. it is so amazing, and so, without further ado, here is my track-by-track review, cuz honestly, i mean do they really think that a 1-5 star system is gonna work??

1) Initiation: ok, this really dissapoints me. Strength through Wounding and Miseria Cantare were both such solid introductions to get you going, and though this one is cool, it is just not very AFI 4/10

2) The Lost Souls: cool lyrics, cool sound, breakneck speed, and a nice punk-like shortness. 8/10

3) The Nephilim: this was the first AFI song that i ever heard, and it really got me interested. now, i dont think it is the strongest of their songs, but it really is a cool song 8/10

4) Ever and a Day: ok, so i only recently started likin this song
but it really is chilling and so melodic that it has won me over 9/10

5) The Sacrifice Theory: wow this song, with all its "Whoa!"s and "Go!"s is just an amazing song and it f*in gets me goin 10/10

6) Of Greetings and Goodbyes: awesome punk song, and hell even a good dancin song. 8/10

7) Smile: ok this song is awesome. it is just a whirlwind of anger and power, and it is only like a minute or two, so it gets in, gets its job done, and by the end you are already breathless. amazing 10/10

8) Story at Three: a haunting tale of almost paranoia, but the ending with the chorus is just beautiful. 8/10

9) Days of the Phoenix: a gothicly romantic song that is apparently their single, but even thought i dont think it is the best song on the cd, this is still amazing. 9/10

10)Catch a Hot One: best song on the cd. with the same intensity and anger of Smile and the same honesty and genius as Days of Phoenix. amazing. 11/10

11) Wester: ok good song but i am sick of the hype about it! it is extremely well written, so i kind of expect better things out of it musically 8/10

12) 6 to 8: a cool almost self-discovery-ish song. coolness 8/10

13) Despair Factor: awesome!! some techno here and there, some punk, some metal, this song has it all and some cool lyrics too!! 10/10

14) Morningstar: this song is heartbreakingly good, and is very close to booting Catch a Hot One from its throne. it is so soft and beautiful that u cant help but love it. 10/10

ok and yes i know there is a hidden track, but after This Time Imperfect, this just isnt deserving of even being rated. so although this album is amazing, it lacks Sing the Sorrow's dark beauty, anthemic intensity, and just genius lyrics. but hey, it is good to develop from album to album, so this cd is still SOOO worth the buy

Free Music Review: A Horror Punk Masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

We start out with a very crazy beginning guitar solo, which moves into the Lost Souls. This is a fun, dark and crazy song, about two people in a conflict. "Look what you'e done to me now...you made me perfect." It's a sarcastic mystery. The Nephilium is even faster, and has this great beat. Davey yells about the shadow and spirits. But then, I love the coda; and he talks about angels and devils. It gives me goosebumps. Beautiful. Ever and a Day is probably one of my favorites, starting out slow, and quiet and a giant poem, with amazing guitars from Hunter and Jade. Davey cries out to a lost lover to whom he cries for. The next one is almost like a "Fall Children part II" about feeling warmth and tasting life. Again, an amazing quota! All of their heart and soul is heard with the fierce yells. Next, a wonderful Halloween-esq song. Check under your bed, there might be a monster. There is a secret show, and Davey says "no need to worry." Somewhat fast with occasional woahs. Hold on tight for the song Smile, which should be innocent, but it could easily have been written for BSITS. If you love that album, you'll like this yelling about humanity of a song. A Story at Three is really thrilling too, he's tired and there are deathless ones...spooky :)! The morning choir sings a poem of death. Days of the Phoenix is really cool too, like many of AFI's songs, this has alot of imagery. Most people may have heard it. Next is a song that oculd have easily been on an EP. Awesome! It reminds me of the book Lord of the Flies, just listen and you will be amazed by the great lyrics and extreme vocals. Sing alond to "now show me." Very hardcore people! Wester is really good too! It gives off this really cool pirate vibe! The guitars and beat, again, are superb! The breakdown is incredible! Six to Eight is a little more melodic, and Davey and Jade sing quiet in the beginning. The chorus is beautiful and the background couldn't be better! Davey holds every note perfectly...one of my favorites. The Despair Factor rocks! Again, amazing imagery! Read the lyrics! So good! There is even some talking and the coda should go in coda history! "Weightless, Endless, Faithless, I'll adore you!" BEAUTIFUL! THen the one and only Morning Star, which is very mourning :'( Here it is evident to have a good voice, quiet or yelling or normal. Davey has it all in this album!!! There may be a surprise too!(shhh)

1. Initiation (N.R.)
2. The Lost Souls (9)
3. The Nephilium (9)
4. Ever and a Day (10)
5. Sacrifice Theory (8)
