Free Music Review: THIS IS AN AMAZING ALBUM
Hit: 5 Stars

"Shut you mouth and open your eyes" got me interested in AFI,
"All Hallows E.P." turned me into a fan.
and "Art of Drowning" got me addicted to AFI, The first time I listened to it, it didn't grab me, it sounded cool but nothing special, but I wasn't really paying attention, The next time I listened to it, I was driving by myself, so I had the volume up and was paying attention, and I was blown away! I must have listened to it 3 times that day, and when I wasn't listening to it, the songs were going through my head.
Everything is perfect on this record, its got melody, and its got balls.
1. "Initiation"- not really a song, but a cool way to start it off.
2. "The Lost Souls"-Great song, heavy, melodic, Great backing vocals.
3. "Nephilim"- Another great song, cool intro
4. "Ever and a Day"-Slower song, Very cool. good lyrics.
5. "Sacrifice Theory"-This is AFI at their best, This song rocks, its got a lot of energy.
6. "Of Greetings and Goodbyes"-Possibly my favorite song on the album, I love the guitar is going with the vocals on the 2nd verse. very cool song.
7. "Smile"-Sounds like it should have been on "Shut you mouth" very straight forward.
8. "A Story at Three"-Cool song, Great Chorus
9. "Days of the Phoenix"-This song is fantastic, again AFI at their best, everybody should know this song, if not then get to know it, its great.
10. "Catch a Hot One"- I love this song, the Chorus is great
11. "Wester"- Cool song, sorta sounds like "Story at three" but thats not a bad thing.
12. "6 to 8"- This song took a while to grow on me, but I love it now, slower and different, but really cool.
13. "Despair Factor"-Cool little drum machine intro, this song is a little different but its cool.
14. "Morning Star"- Really slow, Really cool, its got that "God Called in Sick Today" Feel to it, which is cool.
15. Theres a seceret song on here too, its alright, but not halfway as cool as the secret song on "Black Sails".

This is a must have for anybody who even thinks they like AFI,
Get this and "Black Sails, "All Hallows E.P.", and "Sing the Sorrow", and if you like those, then buy the other 4 (especially Shut your mouth and open your eyes) But if for some strange reason you don't like it, then maybe you'd be better off looking for some "Simple Plan", or "Nickelback" or something a little less original, and a lot less good for that matter.

Free Music Review: its my duty to write this review
Hit: 5 Stars

ive written a lot of other reviews on AFI cds, but being that this one is my favorite, i cant pass it up.

to the point, this album is my favorite because it contains the hardcore and brutal elements from black sails in the sunset and the melodic elements of sing the sorrow. it leans more towards black sails in the sunset though. i bought the cd mainly for of greetings and goodbyes, despair factor, and days of the phoenix, but now i am obsessed with the cd and i love every song. this is arguably my favorite cd of all time. i love when i put this cd in and i remember why AFI is my all time favorite band, has been for years, and will be for a long time.

initiation - 7/10 - one of my least favorite intros mainly because of lack of vocals.

lost souls - 8/10 - somewhat overated song, but i still love it. you can definitely feel the hardcore roots in this song

the nephilim - 9/10 - i love the bridge in this song and the chorus. a lot of good 'whoa's in this song

ever and a day - 10/10 - amazing verse in this song, my favorite verse on the cd. sweet 'whoa' part too

sacrifice theory - 8/10 - one of my favorites when i first bought this cd. i love the bassline

of greetings and goodbyes - 11/10 - genius. nothing else can describe it.

smile - 6/10 - my least favorite song on the cd. its not awful, theres just nothing special about it. i like the group yells though

story at three - 8/10 - i would have given this song a 4 if it werent for the breakdown. i just cant get enough of the "sing to me!" part. its beautiful

days of the phoenix - 10/10 - an instant classic. still one of my favorite songs

catch a hot one - 9/10 - this is an interesting song. hardcore verse, catchy, melodic, sad chorus. i love it. the breakdown is sweet too

wester - 9/10 - an average song, except for the breakdown. those backup vocals are just too good

6 to 8 - 8/10 - i like bits and pieces of this song, mainly the guitar solo at the end. that solo is awesome.

despair faction - 9/10 - i love this song so much, especially the bridge at the end.

morningstar - 8/10 - good slow melodic song. i like it, but its not the best this cd has to offer.

battled (hidden track) - 5/10 - not very good for a hidden track. they couldve put so many other songs here (a winter's tale, dream of waking, who knew)

buy and enjoy

Free Music Review: A goth punk masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

This one's pretty much flawless. The band's fifth LP and it still stands up as my favorite, which isn't to discredit the others. I enjoy all the Jade Puget-era AFI records. Yes, even Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground are albums that I love. And if you haven't caught up with older AFI, this and the All Hallow's EP are great choices to begin with. It is amazing how the group has progressed. I bet if I first heard this group through Answer That and Stay Fashionable and/or Very Proud of Ya, I would've never known that they had the ability to make something that sounds so good as this.

Every song is awesome. The intro, "Initiation," kind of reminds me of NIN's "Help Me I Am in Hell" in the beginning, until the track's distortion and other instruments start kicking in. What a nice introduction. Even hints at their industrial influence are here, as on the rhythm breakdown on "The Despair Factor." The first three full songs are pretty good, but just about everything AFTER that blows those out of the water. Tracks 5-10 is one of my favorite album sequences. I sometimes repeat this part of the album because I like that part so much. You get some nice hardcore guitar riffs on "Smile" and if you're into their new stuff, you'll like the catchy "Days of the Phoenix." Davey Havok writes some pretty interesting lyrics. There are quite a bit of mid-tempo tracks on this album, which is about half of the tracks. There's the Offspring-ish "whoa-oh"s through many of the songs, and most of it will have the mmph to catch you on to this one.

I practically recommend this to people who are new to AFI, and the one's who've been into them for awhile, well they probably own this already. People who don't really know what the band's about should give this a try; it may change their opinion of the band. This is proof that the band was much more than a fad, and are not just scene, they get their popularity because the fans love them so much. For a good reason -- their music is amazing.

Hit: 5 Stars

This CD rules!! My friend got it for me 'cause she knows how much I love AFI's songs. This is the first AFI CD I ever had and it's one of my favourite CDs of all.

1. The Initiation: 10/10 It's a wonderful opening. Starts off slowly and then goes into a moderate tempo and then full speed.
2. The Lost Souls: 10/10 Great song! The drums were awesome and the lyrics are cool.
3. The Nephilim: 9/10 A bit different than "The Lost Souls", but I still like it. I still think it needs at least one more stanza. I thought the guitars were awesome in this!
4. Ever and a Day: 8/10 Er, it's okay. It's slower than the first three, but it's alright. I enjoy listening to it.
5. Sacrifice Theory: 9.5/10 Very cool song. I love how it goes fast and then suddenly it turns mellow.
6. Of Greetings and Goodbyes: 10/10 Great bass in this song. Awesome lyrics and the vocals are great. The guitars were heavy around the second stanza.
7. Smile: 7/10 I don't really listen to this track much. Gotta give it props for the speed, though.
8. A Story At Three: 10/10 Love this song!! It's great! Love the lyrics! It's fast and then it suddenly just seems to stop. I love the mellow part.
9. The Days of the Phoenix: 10/10 The song that got me into AFI. It has...poetic lyrics. A good song to listen to if you don't know AFI.
10. Catch a Hot One: 10/10 A great song. A very fast tempo with great bass and guitar!
11. Wester: 10/10 Love the intro in this song. Love the backing voices in the slower part.
12. 6 to 8: 6/10 I barely listen to this song. This is, like, the only song I don't like. Sure, I like slow parts but this is just way too slow and soft.
13. The Despair Factor: 10/10 AWESOME LYRICS! Love the ending.
14. Morningstar: 10/10 I love the lyrics for the song. It's deep in a way. It's so full of sorrow. The melody's great. I think that Davey's vocals were the best in this last song.

(?) Secret Song: 8/10 It's AFI tradition to have a secret song, man! This album is no different! The secret song for AoD is called "Battled". It's great, but it did sound a bit like "Of Greetings and Goodbyes" in a few parts.
(?) Dream of Waking: 10/10 It's 7"/vinyl only. [Not good], huh? But luckily, my friend downloaded it and sent it to me. I thought it was awesome! Great guitar lines!

Hope this helped you out!

Free Music Review: my favorite cd
Hit: 5 Stars

AFI is justly starting to gain the popularity and attention they deserve, thanks in large part to this album. For those that have followed the band from the beginning, a clear transition can be seen, from the upstart melodies of Answer That... and Very Proud Of Ya to the darker, harder sounds of Black Sails and AOD. AOD seems to be almost a refining of Black Sails. Although Black Sails was darker and more brooding, AOD has more poetic lyrics and more polished vocals from davey havok. One of the best parts about this album is the unifying mood carried throughout. However, this does not mean that the songs sound a lot alike. Anyway, here's the breakdown:

1. Initiation - just an introduction; no vocals
2. Lost Souls - a fast paced song, one of the best
3. Nephilim - a perfect example of the incresingly poetic lyrics that davey has written. Follow along with the lyrics in the booklet for all of the songs, but especially this one.
4. ever and a day - a change of pace, this song is slower. Of all the songs, this one took me the longest to truly get into.
5. Sacrifice Theory - By a thin margin, this is the best song on the cd, though it is less than 2 minutes long. Dark, but almost upbeat at the same time.
6. of Greetings and Goodbyes - like ever and a day, it is slower paced than the others
7. Smile - this almost sounds like a throwback to Shut Your Mouth
8. A Story At Three - there's no particular defining characteristic of this song that separates it from the others, but it's still excellent overall
9. Days of the Phoenix - This is one of the most emotional songs; very powerful
10. Catch a Hot One - This song is overshadowed by others, but it is one of the angrier songs; pumps me up.
11. Wester - A close second place for Best Song, also the most emotional (arguable). The solo just rips my heart out every time I hear it.
12. 6 To 8 - a slow song, and probably my least favorite on AOD (not to say that i dislike it)
13. The Deaspair Factor - It took awhile for this one to sink in, but it's still good.
14. Morningstar - also emotional and slower, this song incorporates a viola to emphasize this

There's an excellent chance you'll love AOD as well if you like tiger army or older stuff by the offspring. Buy today!
