Free Music Review: *1 billion stars...
Hit: 5 Stars

Five stars seems hardly adequet for this disc.
AFI is in a league of their own; the best band ever. not the best punk band, not the best rock band, not the best goth band, not the best metal band; THE BEST BAND IN ALL OF RECORDED HISTORY.

Although it is near impossible to pick a favorite AFI album, I have to say that The Art Of Drowning is closest to the absolute nirvana in musicmaking. Davey Havok's lyrics are indiscribable; the best I can do is dead on, darkly poetic, and the best words that have ever been put to music. They read from the liners, essentially, like poems; the best dark mysterious poems that were ever written in this century. How the man came up with them is to me, a mystery, as they are the best example of perfection in prose. His (Davey's) voice is unsurpassed by anyone I've heard and the beauty of it, combined with the great lyrics, make for an otherworldly listening experience.
Not to overshadow the rest of the ensamble. The music itself provides the same kind of perfection and greatness as the lyrics. Fast paced, magnificant drums meld with wonderous basslines and some of the greatest guitar playing in existance make The Art of Drowning a must have for anyone who appritiates good, wholesome goth/punk/rock/indie with metalistic undertones.

Music at its finest: AFI's The Art Of Drowning.

Free Music Review: "I remember when..."
Hit: 5 Stars

Around the end of October 2001 I ordered this CD off the Nitro site, AFI was the Band of the Month and I got this album with an AFI shirt, patch, a few AFI stickers, and some random stickers of other Nitro bands. I was new to AFI and figured "I like the few songs I've heard, this package is only $20, what do I have to lose?" I came home from school one day to see a brown package in front of my door, I frantically open it, try on the shirt, and pop the CD in. An obsessive love is formed. This album is/was the Good Stuff to say the least. From the intro "Initiation" to the hidden track "Battled" this album's got everything ya need. It's got the fast paced, classic AFI style, and then it's got the slower, darker stuff -which hinted towards "Sing the Sorrow" though none of us were probably aware of it at the time. As good as this is though, it's not better than their first three albums, but it's the best of the "new" AFI, so far at least. The best 3 songs on this album are "The Despair Factor", "Sacrifice Theory", and of course, "The Days of the Phoenix". If you're one of the "Sing the Sorrow" fans and have yet to get another AFI album, start off with either this or "Black Sails In the Sunset".

Free Music Review: AFI: my new gods of punk!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a diehard Offspring fan for two years now, and no band, new or old, ever came close to unseating Dex and the gang as the gods of punk in my mind; not NIN, not Blink, not Eve 6, or even Metallica (other fave bands of mine.)

Until AFI came along.

Now I'm in a difficult limbo between Offspring and AFI. "The Art of Drowning" doesn't quite unseat the _five_ Offspring discs I own, but then, it's only one album, so do the math.

Ear-shredding, emotional, provocative... these words just begin to describe the orgasm of sound that is AFI's latest album. I became interested in AFI only through the fact that they wrote "Totalimmortal," which I heard by the Offspring.

"The Art of Drowning" takes you on an emotional roller coaster, from hard-rocking rage to the darkness of despair to self-realization and back up to poetic odes of confidence and understanding. The rhythms beg for movement and the lyrics scream for you to sing along (but you'd better break out the lyrics sheet if you have any hope of understanding them--they're screamed in an almost undecipherable harmonizing fashion, which I think is extremely cool.)

BUY THIS CD AND EVERYTHING ELSE AFI! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Free Music Review: Landmark.
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not really sure how to classify this album, seeing as how it encompasses just about every modern rock genre, but dammit, go buy it anyway. Hardcore, Post-hardcore, Punk, Alternative, and maybe even a little; *gasp* Emo? Well, maybe not emo persay, but AFI is one of the only bands today that is capable of putting out an almost emo-esque vibe, without actually writing emo songs. To reiterate, this album has everything. For those already familiar with AFI, lead singer Davey Havok's vocals are showcased a little more on this album, although his half-scream, half-sing, vocal compromise is still present, as it was on the previous album, Black Sails in the Sunset. Songs like Ever and a Day, The Despair Faction, 6 to 8, Morningstar and Wester are written so beautifully, you can almost become almost euphoric listening to them, while other numbers such as Smile, and Catch a Hot One, are capable of impressing even the most diligent hardcore fan. The Art of Drowning may be viewed as the equilibrium between AFI's previous hardcore albums, and their newest release, Sing the Sorrow. This is the only true five star album to ever grace my stereo. Free Music Review: Must Have CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

While adding more of a melodic tone in "Black Sails in Sunset" here it is definitely more evident than before, but just adds to the musical talent that this band portrays. The softer songs, which include "Morningstar", "6 To 8", and the bit heavier "Ever and a Day", are a magnificent display of AFI's heart. "Smile" basically takes you back to the hardcore punk that AFI was once completely known for before they started spreading their wings and dipping into unknown waters. I would have to say that the most melodic song would have to be "The Days of the Phoenix" which is one of the most popular songs available on the album. If you are looking for songs that have a mixture and variances of parts available to them I would suggest "The Lost Souls", "The Nephilim", and "The Despair Factor". Although, to choose favorites I would say that "Of Greetings and Goodbyes", which sounds like a journey through a colorful nightmarish dream, is definitely one of my favorites. This is a great album that will not leave you empty handed. This is a MUST buy!
