Free Music Review: A Punk CD for Metalheads
Hit: 5 Stars

"Art of Drowning" by AFI is as good as, if not better than all previous material, and the songs still seem to do the same thing, they baffle me. But, for me that is a very positive aspect to an album, because music is better when it makes you think. The subject matter on the songs found here are AFI's darkest yet, check out "Days of the Phoenix" and "Smile", and the songs have become far more aggressive. The dark quality and speed combined with aggression of "The Art of Drowning" prompts punks to ask the question, "how long will it be before AFI are an all out metal band?" Although that will probably never happen, the songs do have a very metallic aspect to them (and that being said, quit comparing them to the Misfits, they are better matched with Danzig's latter band Samhain.) Also, Davey continues his ballad crooning with the follow up to "God Called in Sick Today" (Black Sails in the Sunset) with the very somber "Morningstar". This is good music to listen to in the dark, and it has the coolest book I've ever seen in a CD.

Free Music Review: Best by Leaps and Bounds!
Hit: 5 Stars

Fellow reviewer invicticide hit the nail right on the head. Offspring, move over. AFI rules my punk world now. East Bay Hardcore is here and it's powerful enough to cause reactions in the most casual fan. This record is far and away AFI's best. Black Sails was very good, but this piece of fine art is amazing! I dare someone to find legitimate fault with the style that Davey, Hunter, Jade, and Adam pursue on this record, because frankly, I can't see anything wrong with a single track on this record. There are standouts, though. "Days of the Phoenix" is a great romp through Jade's guitar skills, with great lyrics and rhythm to boot. "Wester", my personal favorite, is not only a great anthemic punk/hardcore track, but also showcases Davey's great lyrical genius just as well as any other song, probably better. Both sides of the punk spectrum (hardcore-type and ska-type), if there are only two (okay, there aren't, but it was the best I could do) will love this album. For hardcore AFI fans, this is stuff...for casual fans, a quick bong hit. Either way, both give you a high of some sort.

Free Music Review: This is better than you know.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the first AFI album I ever owned and also the best. I've had this album for about 9 months or so and I've listened to it over and over. When I first heard it I was like, "Uh, yeah, this is good..." but after I really opened my ears to AFI, I went back and listened again, and it truly blew me away. I hadn't really noticed the hidden beauty in the songs - Jade's exceptional guitar playing, Hunter's great bass lines, Adam's hard drumming, and, of course, Davey's riveting voice make this album a wonderful addition to a punk fan's CD collection. "Days of the Phoenix" is great with its pretty breakdown in the middle in which Davey whispers "Teenage death boys, the teenage death girls...and everyone was dancing. Nothing could hurt us then..." and I also love "Of Greetings and Goodbyes" and the mellow "Morningstar" pleading "Will you believe in me tonight?" I would recommend this album to any AFI fan and any fan of Bauhaus and darker stuff like that. You will not be dissapointed.

Free Music Review: Good Punk for Once
Hit: 5 Stars

I hate punk music. I have always hated it. I find it all brainless, boring and distasteful. Especially those bands that crank out 30 second "songs" only. In music, I look for skill, art, and intelligence, not just emotion. This is where AFI comes in, with their last 2 albums, they have shown me that they are amazing musicians. They are agressive yet beautiful at the same time. The lyrics are very well written, although they dont seem to make sense sometimes, they are not stupid like most punk lyrics. THE ART OF DROWNING just has a great feel to it. Most times, the band gives you some hard agressive music but then slows it down and the singer actually sings. The songs are all about 3 to 4 minutes which seems to be impossible for punk music. This is truly a masterpiece and I really hope these guys get huge cause they certainly deserve it. This is an amazing style they have going and I have a feeling it's only gonna get better. Go buy this album and spread the word.

Free Music Review: Great Music!
Hit: 5 Stars

AFI is an amazing band, and I am really looking forward to what new music they will come out with in the future, but for now, we are here in celebration of their album The Art of Drowning.

Friends, let me say that The Art of Drowning is one amazing album. It has heavy songs, fast songs, slow songs, everything anyone could possibly want from a good goth punk band. Each song is packed with amazing lyrics, and great riffs....

If you are wondering if you should buy this cd or not, I suggest that you do if you like punk, but also like thoughtful lyrics, and nice soft songs with a great dark mood all around them. If you like AFI, this is a MUST BUY, but if you are new to AFI, I suggest you also buy this, or maybe Sing The Sorrow first if you want softer songs, or The Black Sails in the Sunset if you want more punkier songs. The Art of Drowning is a perfect between period for AFI, transitioning from Hardcore to more Goth Punk...
All around, this is a great album!
