Free Music Review: this album sucks, here's why Hit: 3 StarsAZ sounds like he has been put together by a computer which was instructed to construct the perfect rapper on paper. Every key quality that is needed in a great MC is in him. He says a good, strong line every time, always completing it with a standard rhyme. He never falters. He makes no mistakes. He says the right words. His vocabulary includes random, interesting slang and mindboggingly specific allusions, references, and inside jokes. An AZ song is one long drone of perfection. It becomes boring. Actually, it sucks. What makes rappers interesting is their slip-ups, their imperfections, their flaws. We need to identify with a rapper. When Jay Z ends a line with no rhyme, and seemingly tails off ( as in ...then it got fuzzy and they don't remeber that/ and I don't remeber you...), it has purpose; it adds to the line a significant, additional meaning that is expressed through the human imperfections that become apparant only in moments of truth. Common constantly refuses to rhyme to a consistant meter or rhyme scheme. He is far more intersting and sucessfull than AZ. Every major member of Wu-Tang has some obvious apparant flaw that reveals their true selves (Ghostface stutters, RZA can't ride a beat, GZA can't calm down). They are all better MCs.
However, AZ is truly the emmaculate microphone rocker. He never sips up. He hits hard consistantly. His songs are cool, fun to drive too, adn have badass mafia references. He has street cred and is friends with Nas. Buy the album if you want.

Free Music Review: What is so STRONGLY NEEDED in hip-hop!!! Hit: 5 StarsI am not sure of how I got into AZ aka Anthony Cruz, but I am pretty sure it was after hearing his debut on Nas' Illmatic "Life's A Bitch." With one verse I have never become more enticed by a rapper's effortlessly breathless flow and unique style/delivery. With just one listen I had my new all-time favorite rapper and I always knew it would be that way. If you appreciate the "real"-ness of the BK/QB rappers than AZ won't disappoint!
After hearing "Life's A Bitch" I pretty much copped all of AZ's CD's as fast as I could find them. Whenever he had an upcoming album it would be the most important hip-hop countdown on my schedule.
Basically this is AZ is his prime with some of the illest production and lyricism. From "Uncut Raw" to the "Sugar Hill Rmx" this album is flawless. There aren't many collabos so what you get, for the most part, is raw AZ! The best cut I would have to say is the Pete Rock-produced "Rather Unique" which just exhibits his incrediblely unique style. Other highlights are "Mo' Money, Mo' Murder [Homicide]" w/ Nas and Sugar Hill [the first single]. But, to say in all truth, every song is incredible!
His style and delivery are consistent through Pieces of a [Black] Man even though it is a more commercial and still very HOT release. 9 Lives he really changed his flow up but still he exudes greatness. Aziatic is hailed as his best in many critics opinions but for me it will always be Do Or Die. Now I wait for Final Call which is due soon in June!
He is the most under-appreciated artist in the game and it astonishes me he is not considered one of the greats. To me, though, he will always be the best! Can't wait for Final Call!
Free Music Review: the a in az stands for a+ Hit: 5 Starstalk about one of the best rap cds ever, you're looking at it! az's 1995 debut album just blew my mind! the brooklyn mc is, in my opinion, the most underrated rapper ever. this guy should be getting paid billions cuz of his wordplay. anyway, to the album we go. the opening cut "uncut raw" has an almost haunting beat with the sound of tommy guns going off and laces az's fast rhyming. he has a sorta fast flow over this one. next is the mafioso sounding track "gimme yours" with nas escobar in the chorus saying "gimme what u can't get back"; very smooth and catchy. "ho happy jackie is another smooth track mixed with some horns and piano. it tells the story of an evil woman who seduces men and then gets them killed. as the song ends, az keeps it playalistic and doesn't fall for her. "rather unique" is probably the hottest song on the album. i believe it was a single. it has a real hardcore/nyc beat with az's remarkable flow over it. "i feel for you" showcases az rapping the fastest (compared to the other songs) and this girl humming in the chorus; not bad. "sugar hill" was the album's main single and has anthony cruz daydreaming of being rich and in a peaceful place. next comes the infamous "mo money mo murder mo homicide" which features spectacular violins (i think the first rapper to ever incorporate violins into their rap) and features nas dropping a torcherous verse that's kinda slow. remember u "better have that alibi". song number 9 i forget how it goes, the title track, but i figure it was probably another classic. "we can't win" i believe is the one featuring his sidekick amar (forgive me, i lost this cd like two years ago and i'm going off memory). the second to last cut "your world don't stop" is az's empowering song talking to those locked up that it's not over, keep your head up, there's still life behind bars. it contains this high-pitch voiced singer in the chorus saying "your world your world don't stop". and the final cut is the classic "sugar hill remix". it uses mostly the same verses as on the original but with a faster beat. quite catchy i must say. to sum it all up, if you really wanna hear what rap is all about and what it used to be, then check out "doe or die". this album is spectacular and, even though the beats are hot, az steals the show hands down. this boy can rap and i'm very elated to know that there are still talented rappers out there this day and age, just a lot harder to find. if you really want a mind-bending, thought provoking, exciting album, purchase this and i guarantee you that you won't be dismayed!
