Free Music Notes for ABBA - Gold: Greatest HitsFree Music Review: POP PERFECTION Hit: 5 Stars
Like a really good assortment of chocolates, each of the selected tracks on this definitive greatest hits collection is a unique and delicious confection of lush and thoughtful instrumental arrangements coupled with the cosmic marriage of Anna and Frieda's harmonies...These harmonies do not just sound like two "separate"voices, however! Instead, as no-one has quite achieved since these recordings were made, in my humble opinion, their vocals combine to form ONE ENTITY in a divine, pure, unpretentious expression of LOVE. Not since the Beatles and the Pet Sounds era of the Beach Boys has music of such exquisite care, such daring, such symphonic power been shared by such a uniquely talented amassing of souls! Elements of rock-n-roll, campfire folk, avant-garde electronica, and classical music have been infused(simultaneously, within each track, mostly! )into these astonishing and well-selected songs whose themes are as universal as the music itself. To further expound upon the "box of chocolates" analogy, in conclusion, like chocolate, this music is at turns, smooth, sweet, bittersweet, and above all, timeless. If one's palette is unfamiliar with ABBA and in need of the rush of a new, exotic spectrum of stay-fresh audioflavors, then may I fervently suggest that one gives ABBA GOLD a whirl for a dose of rich sensory experience?

virtually every big abba song is here, in one compact 77-minute listening experience. and while i was very young during their heyday, i was still aware enough to know that 'fernando' was everywhere. this is ultimate top 40 stuff. but the skill, complexity of song structures, and the pure enjoyment of singing and performing on display here shows (a)why this group's songs are still loved by many, even though they are symbolic of a very decadent era; and (b)that those very attributes are what's missing from the britneys and backstreet boys of today. i mean, it's insane how the hook to 'sos', or 'chiquitita', or 'super trooper', or...etc.etc. just get under your skin and pop up years later, in my case 20.lyrically, 'chiquitita' is from your friend, asking u 2 put your head on their shoulder and talk about what's troubling u; 'knowing me...' is about the realization that 2 people just are not compatible in their relationship. no anger, but sadness at this realization. and 'the winner takes it all' is not a fun listen if u have just left somebody-a true heartbreak song. 'one of us' is about divorce. some songs may be a bit heavy, but overall fun 2 listen 2. if u want 2 hear true songcraft, buy this. now! guaranteed that u will be hard pressed 2 take this off your cd player, especially if u never heard this stuff b4

Writing a review of this album is really a labor of love for me. I grew up listening to all the Abba albums, and 20 plus years later, I still love them. It is hard to imagine that anyone reading this would not know about ABBA, but if you want to find out more, there is no better way than buying this CD. Many greatest hit collections leave things out, include questionable tracks, or new material that is sub-par. Not this one. This is the best of the best, covering all of their successes from Waterloo through to the end. Song after song of impeccable singing, playing, writing and producing. Abba songs still sound fresh and exciting today, long after most predicted that they would have faded away. There is a power and a passion to their material--they always, always delivered it as if everything depended on it. I don't know a single half-hearted effort from this group, and they explored all that pop had to offer--ballads, rock songs, disco numbers, power pop, even reggae. Their ecclecticism led many to write them off as mere imitators in their day, but the proof is that the songs endure as pop classics.
This is, quite simply, the perfect single-disc greatest hits album of Abba songs--evey song a winner, giving an excellent portrait of the many styles and moods of the group.
Free Music Review: Uncool? Not anymore! Hit: 5 Stars
I also was in Jr. High School and High School when Abba was cranking out top 10 hits. In those days I snuck into the record shop and hid my Abba albums under the cover of Led Zeppelin and then ditched the Zeppelin at the check out counter. It was imperative to hide your face while purchasing Abba albums. They were that uncool. To admit you loved Abba in geometry class was to court disaster and be ostracized for the rest of your life.Such nonsense mattered as a 14 year old, now I can openly say Abba's music is wonderful and their arrangements were as innovative as anything coming out of the 70's. It is simply impossible to listen to Dancing Queen or Take a Chance on Me and not want to hear the songs again and again. The vocal intricacies on Take a Chance are equal to the harmonies on most Beach Boys records. How about Waterloo? Three minutes of the most pulsing, catchy music ever put on a disc. Abba's music sounds better today than it ever did, particularly when you know what dreck was produced by other bands in the intervening years. They might not have been Dylanesque lyrically, but few have ever written songs with such clever hooks, bridges and infectious rhythm. Thirty years after the fact, the impossible has happened: Abba has finally become cool!
